Mightn’t appreciate the USA and their foreign policies, but you have got to give it to the them for their ‘Can Do’ approach.
What an achievement – Well done!

I use paint stripper to get as much of the old paint off and clean with scotch bright – then a real good wash in warm soapy water
When glass bead blasting alloy bits, I use low pressure (say 25-30 psi) and then etch prime and paint bits.
High pressure glass bead blasting (say 70-90 psi) will remove too much metal and leave a rough almost sandpaper finish
DO NOT USE GARNET for the blasting – too rough
Once you have cleaned the parts you may like to pasivate them see http://www.auf.asn.au/scratchbuilder/alodine1201.pdf

I would be glad to own one, I rather like them. They are not all that common in Australia. The long distances and the kangaroos and cattle on the road tend to make Australians buy a bigger car.
My car of choice at the moment would be a Toyota Land Cruiser! Followed by a Mazda RX8 (to go with my RX7)

I am surprised you guys have missed Mt Tarampa (near Lowood), there is a rumour about something being baried there. There underground bunkers, I have been in them, but it was empty

What did they use their aeroplanes for? and who used them?

When I was about 10 or 12 years old, I was in backyard in Palmdale, California when I heard low rumble, over the next 10 minutes it got louder and louder and the ground begain to shake. Then I saw them three (3) B-36’s in formation at maybe 30,000 feet. It took 10 minutes for them to pass out of sight and and another 10 minutes for the noise to pass. A sight and sound I will never forget.
More on Jimmy Stewart if anyone knows more. I have always liked him as an actor

I think for this type of contest, the rules should be that it hasn’t had a rebuild. That is it should be essentially the original aeroplane fitted with the original engine.

Read the wiki article with interest as one of my aeroplanes (an Auster) was own and flown by Wing Commander and ace Bobby Gibbs. Gibbs went on to play an important role in the development of aviation in Papua New Guinea.
I have a couple of friends who knew Bobby Gibbs and they said be was a real character and enjoyed a good joke.

Re the drawings being burnt, I heard the same story about Percival Proctor drawings and New Zealand. I have microfilm of the NZ drawings. I have since found out that there are full sets of Proctor/Gull drawings about in England somewhere.
I wouldn’t mind betting that there are also Miles Drawings about as well

Be interesting to see the affects on global warming with the ash cloud and lack of particles from jet exhausts.
The 9/11 closure of US Airspace did and there have been various scientific studies that reported unexpected results.
I am interested to know if all this ash in the upper atmosphere will cause global cooling because it reflects the sun’s rays.

If you are successful in making a data plate, I am interested in a couple

You would need to specify the mark of Gipsy Queen, some don’t have a reduction gear and the starter I have looks very similar to that that can be fitted to a Gipsy Major

Whell that is interesting. Been involved with Proctors for over 20 years and never knew about Tenencia Ltd.
Interesting how threads evolve, start out talking about Austers (one of which I own but don’t love) and end up with Percival – a subject very near and dear to my heart. I have learnt a lot from this thread and I previously thought that I had a fair understanding.
Wonder what the situation is like in the Land of the Long White Cloud?

Is this a common feature of many UK aeroplanes, the original manufacturer has dissapeared and the aeroplane owners are left with potential problems. In the vintage aeroplane area, I am thinking of Miles as an example.
I am sure that a number of american types must be similarly affected. What is the situation in the US?

So, in practical terms’ how is this different from De Havilland types such as the Moth series?
