    The Stumps

Do not fear – the Stumps are alive and well. I saw them in Halton House Officers’ Mess last month, October 2010. There is the original display case and it contains the top half of two Stumps and the bottom of another Stump – ie, half of the ‘set’ if all three stumps were broken in half. Does/did OXO keep the other bits, and the bails?

There is a plaque attached to the display case which reads:

“These Stumps were presented by OXO Limited to Headquarters No 11 Group RAF.

They were broken during the forced landing of Spitfire SL.574 piloted by Air Vice-Marshal H. J. Maguire CB DSO OBE on the OXO sports ground at Bromley.

The aircraft was taking part in the Battle of Britain Flypast on 20th September 1559 and this was the last flight of a Spitfire by the RAF”

Presumably the display case was transferred to Halton when the Officers’ Mess at Bentley Priory was closed.

If the photographic library IS included in the deal with Kelsey then joy of joy. However, I would have thought that IPC would make more money from it if they sold it to one of the big commercial photograpghic agencies. If the readership of Aeroplane Monthly really is falling then they might have struggled to sell the title without the added attraction of the photographic library. No doubt it will all come out in the wash when we get to see the first issue published under the Kelsey imprint.

I see that Alan Warnes, Editor of Key title Air Forces Monthly, is also moving on after 12 years at the helm. They are ringing the changes at Key.

Have heard some rumours about a new Editor for Aeroplane Monthly …..

I suspect that the Aeroplane photographic library will stay with IPC, which will give the new Editor perhaps his biggest headache – how to source the unique photographic coverage that accompanied the articles in Aeroplane Monthly; unless, of course, some access agreement was included in the sale deal.

TC Holder approved modifications are available for Tiger Moth and Chipmunk to permit the use of Ceconite or Polyfiber. No doubt there are approved modifications for other (British) types as well.

The CAA has just consulted on the issue:

CAA Announces Changes To The Regulation Of Ex-Military Aircraft

The UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has today announced changes to the regulation of permit to fly ex-military aircraft. Following a number of incidents and accidents involving ex-military aircraft over recent years, the CAA is taking steps to clarify the purposes for which ex-military aircraft can be operated. The CAA is therefore acting to remind the owner/operators of ex-military aircraft that their permits to fly do not permit the carriage of passengers in return for any type of payment.

The CAA’s guidance document CAP 632 ‘Operation of Permit to Fly Ex-military Aircraft on the UK Register’ will be updated to require operators to brief passengers on the nature of ex-military permit to fly aircraft operations before flight. Also, it is proposed that the owner/operators of ex-military aircraft with more than one seat will be required to install a new, more easily understood warning placard in their aircraft, worded as follows:

    OCCUPANT WARNING
THIS AIRCRAFT HAS NOT BEEN SHOWN TO COMPLY WITH CIVIL SAFETY STANDARDS FOR COMMERCIAL PASSENGER FLIGHTS. IT IS ILLEGAL TO CARRY PASSENGERS IN THIS AIRCRAFT IN EXCHANGE FOR MONEY, GOODS OR SERVICES

The CAA proposes to change the Air Navigation Order 2009 to include this revised placard.

In addition, the CAA has concluded that there is some ambiguity as to the maximum number of occupants permitted to be carried in some ex-military aircraft with more than two seats. The policy has therefore been clarified such that the maximum number of occupants permitted to be carried in the aircraft is now limited to four or the number of seats fitted to the aircraft whilst in military service, whichever is the more restrictive. In particular, for helicopters, previously only crew members essential for the operation of the aircraft could be carried (including two additional ground crew if required for maintenance away from base). This change will end the practice, in certain cases, of declaring passengers as ground crew.

The changes affect all ex-military aircraft with more than one seat operating under a permit to fly. All owner/operators of ex-military aircraft with more than one seat fitted will be issued with a new permit to fly, with limitations and conditions reflecting the change in policy, together with an associated certificate of validity for the aircraft.

Although permit to fly aircraft are not permitted to undertake commercial air transport or aerial work, they may carry passengers where no payment is made. Each permit to fly is issued by the CAA with associated conditions, including the maximum number of occupants authorised to be carried. In order for carriage of fee-paying passengers to be allowed under the ANO, the aircraft would need to have met all the relevant safety standards and hold a Certificate of Airworthiness.

Amazon is showing a “BBMF Boxed Set” for publication next month, comprising the Lanc, Spit and Hurricane books. I see that there is also a Mustang equivalent coming out, by Jarrod Cotter and Maurice Hammond.

Poor old PKN – burnt out in the hangar fire at Felthorpe (was it in 2006?).

By the sound of it your strop was well justified on the Saturday – the traffic seemed to catch everyone with their pants down. I’m afraid you may have to wait perhaps five years for another biggie like this (75th anniversary), especially with so many Hurricanes and Spits. Perhaps by 2015 they will be able to put up six or more Hurricanes and as many as 20 Spits (on the assumption that the BBMF will still not participate in Duxford’s big balbos).

The next show with similar amounts of warbirds, but not so many Spits but loads of Mustangs (five this year) will be Flying Legends in early July 2011.

Sight-seeing Dak? I thought that Air Atlantique/Classic Flight had to stop Dak flights because of “EASA Rules”. So how come a Dak can carry out sight-seeing flights in Germany, the home of EASA, when the type can’t be used any more in the UK?

As you seem to be in Canada, try one of your countrymen, Neil Davidson, who can make almost any of the wooden parts for Tiger Moths so presumably has the drawings:
