Hi Stuart, thanks for the information, that is the first lead I have had, would it be possible to make further enquiries please.
Andy
Hi Dave, thanks for the information, various record’s give G-AAAW as having Lion 50108 fitted, this is very interesting to me as my engine also has some Old Warden history until about 1970.
Does anyone know the number of the Lion engine at Old Warden ?
Andy
Hi French47,
I wish I had your engine experience, I restore and rebuild aero engine’s for enjoyment, you learn something everyday, usually that the guy’s who designed and built them were way more knowledgeable than me ! you are far from clueless and you can spell, good to see you here, thanks for your input.
Andy
Hi John, the Lumsden book is very good isn’t it.
I am sorry to ask so many questions but this place seems to be an amazing centre of knowledge,
The prop hub I have on the engine has machine gun interupter gear cams set in a 4 blade prop sequence, does this narrow down the plane fitment ?
Does anyone have any idea if any Lion engined planes are still in existance anywhere ?
Thanks again.
Andy
Hi Wieesso,
Thanks for your idea and link, you could be right, everything adds up.
The reason I asked about the Blackburn manual is that this engine many years ago was nicknamed “the Blackburn engine”, did that come from a “Blackburn aircraft” or was it from a “Blackburn Blackburn” plane ?
Hi Ross, thanks for your interest,
I am rebuilding a Lion VA from about 1926, unfortunately I have no history but really would like to know the aircraft it was fitted too.

I have an AP1342 for the Lion XIA, an AP1267 for the Lion V and VA and also a Napier manual for the Lion V.
I would very much like to aquire an AP1363 which I think would be very useful to me, do you know of anybody dealing in these ?
I am sorry I don’t know that much about these type’s of publication, would a similar manual have existed for a Blackburn aircraft with this type of engine ?
I am looking for a set of Claudel-Hobson updraught carbs to give complete originality, anybody out there have any ?
Andy
Hi Ross, the photo’s and diagram’s you posted are very useful, can I ask where they are from ?
The reason I ask is that I am currently rebuilding a Lion engine very similar to the Virginia unit and the sort of information you have would be invaluable to my project.
Andy
Hi Ralph, thanks you for the offer, I have a Napier “branded” manual and an Air Ministry version, they are very comprehensive.
Andy
Hi RPSmith, Schneiderman and all, Schneiderman you are spot on with the engine types, I have amended my list, thanks.
As before if anybody has any Lion parts or info to assist me get this engine running I would be very grateful.
Andy
Hi Creaking Door and all,
I also have seen the caption on the Shuttleworth Lion engine stating it is a mark XI but it is more like a V or VA as it is missing some crankcase webs and its carbs are front mounted.
Andy
Hi merkle, I have started working on my Napier Lion, it’s a big restoration, look here in a couple of years, I also have a Wasp Jr to get going along with a Commer TS3, 3 cylinder, 6 piston, rocker arm to crank, 2 stroke, diesel with supercharger.
Andy
Hi Merkle,
Great video of the Alvis running, have a look at this,

They do sound good.

Hi Roger, I don’t know what the numbers mean either !
The “INSTR” number I am sure is some ” ministry instruction ” number such as a rebuild order.
The “Sealion” variant has a different crankcase amongst many other thing’s that are less obvious, but that said some engines later than series V don’t have the prop drive spur gear design but are “aero”.
Chris Williams Bentley has a Sealion engine and is very much running, try the youtube website and search for Napier Bentley, it is worth it for the noise alone !
Andy
Hi Roger, great work, thanks for the list.
I can add that the Cosford engine is “50479” and my engine is “51383”, I will try and get photo’s of all to get an updated list.
On your list the Hendon VIIA has an “N” number, my engine also has one of these “N.1405” is this a rebuild number ? I also have “INSTR 1474B” again could this be a rebuild number ?
Hi OHOPE, the Omaka engine is Sealion 66948, thanks.
Again as alway’s, if anyone has any parts for Lions please contact me, all help is appreciated.
Andy
