Hi Low n slow, yes I have, Chris Williams (Napier Bentley owner) has been the most important person to help with my restoration, he is a seriously talented engineer.
His engine is one of only 2 running examples I have found.

Hi Mark and all, I have so far found the whereabouts of 23 “Lions” of various series to date in the UK in public and private hands and 8 abroad but I am sure there will be a few more.

Hi Paul and All, I guess a Fairey Long Range Monoplane which had a huge metal prop and special Lion XIA engine.

Hi Lownslow, yes, I see what you mean on the size, although the photo I am looking at shows DH4’s with 4 blade props and the blade size differs.

Hi Atcham and all, after looking through the Cooksley and Rimell “WW1 British Aeroplane Propellers” publication it looks very similar to that fitted to a DH4, these could be RH or LH tractor type.

Hi SM, I am not that “well up” on many of the ancillaries really, I am on a very steep learning curve regarding some of the mechanical components of the Lion as I am rebuilding a series Va at the moment.
I would say the reason that Napier’s would subcontract any part that they would use would be that they thought the supplier had more expertise in that area at that time.
I am sure the Napier Heritage Trust will have the reasoning behind the decision.

I have installation dimensions of Va and XIa engines, I will try and get them scanned if they will help, but they are very old as you know.

    Hi SM,

I have some engine installation dimensions for Lion engines, which mark of engine was fitted in the G VI ? I can then check on what I have.

    Napier Lion

Hi Creaking Door, I am rebuilding a 1926 Lion Va to ground run, it is a very interesting engine.

I already ground run an Alvis Leonides from a Bristol Sycamore, although it now has a prop and runs as a fixed wing type engine.

If anybody has any Lion parts please get in touch.

    Thanks.

    Napier Lion piston

Hi Creaking door, you have a Napier Lion piston, or half of one !

The gudgeon pin oil hole is for the fully floating pin with end wear buttons.

I am looking for Lion parts including Hobson updraught carbs, coolant pipework, a test club and just about any other parts available.

    Thanks.

    Andy
