And a better question. If the manufacture of the Gripen was to go to the years of R&D and $$$$$$$ to develop a naval version of the Gripen: What nations navy would buy it??????

    India and maybe Brazil.

Specialists in military aviation have their favorite to replace Tiger Swiss. The “Neue Luzerner Zeitung revealed yesterday that the evaluation committee had chosen the Rafale from the French aircraft manufacturer Dassault. This morning, the newspaper Lucerne returns on their information by referring to the surprise of parliament in central Switzerland to the swiftness of this choice.

Swiss AF preference for Rafale dismissed as “laughable and stupid rumours” by Swiss MoD:

This is weird. A few weeks ago Lula said that Dassault offered the better Tot deal? If this information is correct Emraer actually favors SAAB? Also, is it true that BAF also recommends SAAB? I were Lula I would feel pretty uncomfortable right now.

If Embaer and BAF recommends a fighter which costs less than the Rafale, then what motivates Lula´s decision to purchase the Rafale? Is it all about politics?

Offers can be improved considerably in a few weeks. Prices can be cut, for example.

I´m not so sure about that. The involved companies have spent considerable time on making their offers attractive and competitative. I doubt there´s much price to be cut. If price is such an issue to Brazil, it probably just mean they can´t afford it. Negotiating on price after the evaluation is over is kind making a fool of yourself IMHO. How are they going to cut maintenance cost?

Does anyone understand what is going on here? Rafale was declared the winner on September 7th? Then it was announced that the remaining competitors were given a chance to improve their offers until September 21st? On September 21st this deadline was postponed to October 2nd?

If the winner has already been selected why would they do something like this? What can possibly the competitors do to change their offers during a few weeks? To me it seems the politicians are trying to win some time.

If it´s just a smokescreen the Brazilians are making a big fool of themselves IMHO.

Wing 7 commander Manut Wongwat said the air force would have to keep seven F-5 jets on for now, and risk flying them beyond their service life.

This seems a bit risky? How long are RTAF going to fly the F-5s beyond their service life? Until an accident occurs? Wouldn´t it be better to ground these aircraft? Maybe this is a way to put pressure on Thai politicians?

BTW, a lot of question marks I know 😉

It is when you’re happy to accept that the 500 in the name of the Vixen 500E means 500 TRMs when it supports your claim that the Gripen NG radar will only have 500 TRMs, then say there’s no evidence that the number in the name has any significance when it turns out that the Gripen radar will be based on the Vixen 1000E. If he’d been consistent, fine, but you can’t deny the validity of your own arguments when you find they don’t support your preferred conclusion.

How true! Also, when a certain person claim that the nose of the Gripen is too small to contain more than 500 modules, without providing a source. Then he denies obvious proof of the opposite when a source is provided.

    Swerve, you’re da man, thanks.

I agree. It takes a lot patience to deal with these trolls.

to be more precise he was sacked/replaced because his wife accepted 80000€ from EADS to fund her own firm (from the report)…In terms of indepence it is obviously not ideal…

I think it´s very important to be precise when it comes to such serious allegations. One is innocent until proven guilty! At least that´s my opinion.

Anyone interested in world corruption should check out Transparency International´s web site. They have a list ranking the countries of the world regarding corruption. Sweden share the first spot of least corrupted country together with Denmark and New Zeeland. Britain rank at 16 and France rank at 23. 😮

The austrian former air chief was sacked for corruption

Not true! If this program suggests so, they´re wrong. IIRC, he did for instance play golf with some EADS VIPs. This was deemed as inappropriate behaviour and he was replaced. He wasn´t sacked as far as I know. There was also some suspicions about his wife but no proof.

The left/green anti military wing in Austria are trying to cancel the E2K deal due to corruption but they haven´t found any proof.

The swedish investigation regarding alleged Gripen corruption was dropped this week due to lack of evidence.

A very well documented 1h investigative swiss TV report about massive frauds cases over the Typhoon in Saudi Arabia and the GRIPEN in Czech republic and south Africa. The swiss are very worried to see such type of practises at home…

Wow, I´m shocked! I guess you believe they would have chosen the Rafale otherwise?

my god… Gripen bribed? so much for the immaculate plane..

Don´t worry, Romania can´t afford the Gripen anyway. Maybe a dozen of used F-16s.

This is good news! The export ban was not realistic anyway! Japan is an industrial giant and needs the export market. There seem to be an increasing number of countries with growing ambitions to design and produce aircraft. China, India, Brazil and Japan all have potential to become major powers in aviation and export aircraft in large numbers. Not very good news for the Clinton White Paper which goal was to achieve a monopoly position for the US on aircraft export. 😉

BTW, The Kawasaki C-X ought to be an attractive alternative to US and Airbus products for many countries.

[QUOTE=”Scooter”]Personally, I believe that was just a move to try to get the US to approve the sale of the F-22. Which, is not likely to happen as production is going to close shortly. Regardless, just becoming involved with the F-35 program would be expensive enough. Let alone the F-22 or a totally domestic Japanese Stealth Program…………….

Really, the F-35 is the only viable option for Japan in my opinion. So, she mite as well except it and move on……….. [/QUOTE

The US attitude on arms exports is interesting. They won´t export the F-22 to friendly countries no matter how much they begg. Instead they offer or almost demand these countries to sign up for downgraded F-35s. Like if you don´t purchase the F-35 you´re not a freind of ours.

The US should accept that Japan wants the F-22 and not the F-35 and move on. 😮

Work on Tejas Mk.2 has already been expedited, with EADs being chosen as consultants and tender process for a more powerful engine commencing in August this year. If work on it begins by next year, then by 2014 it should be introduced in the IAF. However, ongoing work on Naval Tejas and Trainer Tejas may then have to be slowed down.

That´s great news. One question though, just a week ago the Mk.2 was to be introduced by 2013 and everybody was convinced this would happen. Now it´s 2014 all of a sudden? It seems when dealing with Tejas dates are goals rather than actual deadlines?

Even if the LCA only meets parity with the other aircraft the very fact that it is indigenious will go a long way for Indias long term stratigic interests!

    I agree!

The only reason India should by any US aircraft is if the US promises to back out of afghanistan stop funding the pakistani state military and the ISI and leave Indias back yard!

Since both India and Pakistan could end up using American fighters I wonder which country would be favoured should India choose an American fighter? Would India get all it was asking for its fighters or would US restrict some equipment and weapons with Pakistan in mind? The Greek for instance are claiming they don´t get the engines and weapons for their F-16s as the Turks do for their F-16s. The Turks being favoured for their help on the “war on terror”.

If the indians want a western omnirole aircraft let it buy the Eurofighter atleast it is a class above all of the offers on the table!

This kind of “my fighter is better than yours” comments add nothing to the debate. Actually with the A2G limitations of the EF2K you could claim it offers less than the other offers on the table.

Remember that LM/USAF defines supercruising as M1.5 or greater. That doesn’t mean that the F-35 can’t cruise at M1 or greater.

That was exactly what I meant. Lockheed Martin defines supercruising as M1.5 or greater. The F-35 doesn´t come near this limit and therefore should not be referred to as a 5th gen fighter. As I mentionded earlier it´s more a 4,5-4,9 gen fighter…
