That was moving fast indeed…
About the engine. Would it be possible to adopt the GEF414 EDE instead of the GEF414G?
“GE414” (I presume you mean the GE F414) is nothing to do with Eurojet. Eurojet makes the EJ200, which powers Eurofighter.
Of course GEF414 and EJ200 are different engines! What I meant was that if the GEF414 is considered too demanding to adopt, I don´t see how the EJ200would be much less demanding? Sorry for being vague.
Kaduna2003, as per a news report, ADA rejected the GE-F414 engine because it would have involved substantial redesign of the Tejas’ airframe. The GE-F414 is no longer being considered for Tejas.
That should rule out any other engine than the GE404 or Kaveri?
A structural redesign is looking increasingly likely regardless of which engine they settle on. Even if they stay with the 404.
Question is, will they keep their eyes shut and wish the problems away as they have done in the past, or will they start on the redesign early and provide a realistic delivery date?
A redesign of the LCA to accept the GE414 or Eurojet is such a major task that I guess it would most likely kill the Kaveri. I believe this why they hesitate to do that.
I think the IAF will accept what it has already paid for (20 LCA) plus a potential 20 more based on the GE-404IN20 say from 2010 to 2012. thereafter, they will start getting the heavier, more capable LCAs with a 10ton class engine. JMT.
IAF will probably get 20-40 LCA with GE404 engines. What happens next remains to be seen.
I just have some lingering doubts regarding this new Gripen-N…
a) What will these extra stores will do for the little planes drag, flight performance and radar cross section?
b) The landing gear changes seem to me as a very demanding and expensive engineering feat, the whole wing and lower fuselage will have to be redesigned, retested and recertified… who’s paying for it? I dare say: not Norway…
c) This new model seems only to make sense if other countries besides Norway decide to join into a major single purchase. Where and who are these other countries?
d) Hasn’t Norway just declared that they’d be sticking to their JSF commitments?
Lots of questions, but few good answers for SAAB…
Comments?
Yes, LOL!
Excellent news! I guess 12 are enough to replace all the F-5 Tigers of 701 squadron?
I noticed the RTAF pilot too 🙂
We have the initial answer here.
Are you sure about that? Those models look like RTAF roundels applied to standard presentation models. The real things are supposed to be delivered in 2011, so RTAF has some time to decide.
Analayo: Are you sure about the four D’s and two C’s? Seems a little on the odd side, I would have thought it would be the other way around.
Hopefully, RTAF will acquire more Gripens in the future and are planning ahead. The two seaters are good for introducing pilots to the type. Good idea IMHO.
Good to hear that an agreement has been reached. I would have loved to see the Gripen NG in Thai colors though.
I’d love to believe that they will be getting something else than the dull grey camo but somehow I don’t think so. Congratulations!
I agree. Thai Gripen fan´s camo looks much more interesting, but what happened to the national insignia?
I dont know if the requirements are even known. Probably not. Maybe there arent any except to get as many planes as possible.
Delivery dates afaik are too early for the Gripen NG and F-35.
Again, if the Swiss AF wants the NG, why not lease some 39A for a couple of years until the NG is ready for production?
As far as I know Thailand purchased their F-16 fleet in batches and over a long period of time? If Thailand has the same strategy with the Gripen, maybe the Gripen NG would be a better solution than the Gripen C/D?
You can bet F-16 parts are only going to get more expensive when the USAF stops using them in the near future.
That is the lesson the Swiss has learnt from the Hornet.
I think Gripen will probably be the way they go, either that or the phoon’. Thats my gut feeling anyhow.
My gut feeling is that the Swiss won´t seriously consider operating Super Hornets along with their legacy Hornets. Rafale and EF2000 would probably be too expensive. Operating two double engined types with two completely different engines can´t be very economical. The Gripen would however be ideal for the Patrouille Suisse. 😀
BTW, the Phoon? Shouldn´t the nick name be the Tiffie 😉
Interesting…why not the F16?
My guess is that the Swiss don´t want to end up with another type that is being retired from service in its native country just like the Hornet.
The timeframe is to replace the F-5E sometime from ~2010. This rules out the Gripen NG.
I wouldn´t rule out the possibilty of the Gripen NG. The Swiss might lease some 39Cs until the arrival of the NG, just like Austria leases F-5 Tigers until the arrival of the EF 2000.
LCA Tejas 🙂
I think that the thought of the Netherlands developing their own fighter is extremely unrealistic. Designing airliners or fighters are two completely different things. The Dutch didn´t develop any fighter after the outbreak of WWII. Any attempt of designing a fighter would end like the LCA…
BTW, I belive that the blind commitment of Dutch politicians for the JSF is a way to keep some technical know how from the Fokker era in the country.
As we have discussed earlier, the slenderness of Gripen’s fuselage is negated by its wide-angle wings and much more by its canards, which generate severe drag (profile and induced). Tejas does not have canards and so avoids that much drag, but yet generates a vortex above its wings by having cranks on its wings. Thus it is a unique design.
Let me see, LCA weights one tonne less than Gripen and has less drag than Gripen? Still the top speed of LCA is mach 1,8 and the top speed of Gripen is mach 2? OK, I get it
Uh-oh… you’ve invoked red ink! Play nice or fear consequences.
Sorry Arthur, I really tried to play as nice as I could. Really!

I disagree! I find Hammer´s posts very insulting, biased and disrespectful. I cannot find anything informative or useful about his posts. The idea is only to mock and provoke. When this keeps happening all over again and again I can´t help believing there´s an agenda. He´s just not a guy asking critical questions, that´s for sure.
