I don’t think they have thought that far ahead yet, they have too much going as it is, not only are they buying the Falcons, but now they want light attack planes as well as the new ships they are buying and the Army needs stuff too, and since the world bank won’t lend them any money they have to turn to another source of income.

I was reading today the the FACh is opening a comp to find a light attack fighter with upto 14 being ordered to fulfill a growing gap in the Counter Insurgency role, wonder what they’ll go for, possibily the A-29 from Embraer

Oren, I noticed the Apache in the background of that last pic, do you have some clear shots of it in that colour scheme, I heard that they were trailing it, have they decided to go ahead with it now have they?

Well as a former member of this board pointed out to me today in a private discussion, it’s really what you have a need for and how much you’re willing to spend.

Obviously Spain has a similar view to that of us here in Australia, it was determined that the Apache was too much for our need. The AH-1Z was found to lack deck manouverability on tight deck, due to it’s skids and was eliminated in the first round (Bell didn’t like that so took the ADF to court delaying the ARH process by two years- end result re-opening of the comp but eliminated again for the same reason).

If your country has a definate reason for Anti tank busting (which I really don’t see many now, likens this role to that of the Bombers- old and out dated methods especially in the dawn of the UCAV era), then go out and buy the Apache or Mi-28’s but if you need ARH’s (Armed Reccon Helos) then look seriously at what is on offer, some of the lesser machines can do the job just as good as the big boys, me personally I’ve always had a thing for the MD-500D TOW Deffenders.

Well for my thoughts the AH-64 is rather slow and unmanouverable, the Cobra’s are rather limited as to their growth potential (they have been around for a very long time and one may feel that after the Z model there can’t be any futher improvements made).

I like the idea of the Ka-52 and even the Ka-50’s but a turret mounted gun is far better than one sitting on the side with limited fields of fire. Not much is known about the Mi-28 so i won’t comment on that simply to say that if the Russians don’t hurry up with them then they may loose out to other more competative companies in this market.

Then there’s the two out siders, the AH-2 Rooivalk and the A-129. I love the little Mungusta, that’s got to be one of the hardest hitting choppers in production and I’m left wondering why they pulled out of our ARH comp since they were actually going to win. I also love the Rooivalk, I saw it when it was down here, sure it was big (just a bit bigger than the Apache) but I felt that it had a harder hitting power than the American machine. It defiantely was much faster and for it’s size was very acrobatic, and I love the idea with the AAM’s on the end of the wing stubs, that in my books is definately some insurance over the growing fighter threat.

Finally there is the Tiger: I’m not sure what to think of this machine, Sure we bought 22 and Spain has ordered 24 and then the Gremans and French have their orders, but it’s small and has a very high projected survival ratio on the field via it’s content of composite materials, but I have to admit that having the worlds most accurate gun would tend toi swing any conflict in its favour!

Well those are my thoughts anyway

Well some of our hardwear is from the US but that doesn’t mean that we will become the US nor intergrated in anyway to it. The SH will never serve down under and the F-35 is being now seen as a replacement only for the Hornets.
