    BSG-75.

Do you, and others on the forum, think we should go the Australian way, it’s very tough to get in there, as there rules and regs are much tighter than ours.

Even Australia has relaxed its immigration laws – until around 1973 they had what was known as the ‘White Australia Policy’, which barred anyone with signs of ‘colour’…

In the calculation height=distance X tan 3 degrees
    =1.75 X 0.0524
    =0.0917 miles

It was all very well for Bader to ‘goon’ bait, as he was already a celebrity by then, even inside Germany. His ‘I’ll show them!’ attitude relied on the fact that the Germans couldn’t just take him outside and shoot him as they would have done to almost any other chronic trouble-maker.
It was his fellow inmates who were made to pay for his grandstanding, self-glorifying displays of ‘the bulldog spirit’…

He was obviously an extraordinary man, with a disability which turned out to be quite an advantage in the type of warfare he was engaged in, at a time when Britain badly needed heroes. It was certainly his time, and nobody can take that away from him.

But that sort of strength of character, single-mindedness, and sheer obstinacy comes at a price, and doesn’t rub very well with others who don’t have it, or just want a quiet life.
I remember a TV interview that summed Bader up in my opinion. His medical orderly at Colditz , a Seaforth Highlander named Alex Ross, was treated like a slave, and even had to carry Bader up flights of stairs in the castle, spurred on by the ‘jockey’ if he dawdled.

As a non-combatant Ross could have been liberated and been back in the UK some 18 months before he was, but Bader refused to let him go back – he needed him there as his ‘skivvy’. Ross had bitter memories of Bader, and called him a few choice names on TV, the worst of which rhymed with ‘punt’…

On the information they had, (burgulary in progress) they would hardly have approached the scene weapons drawn and safety off.

Isn’t that exactly what armed police would do?

Where human profit is concerned, wild animals lose out every time – whether it’s a UK farmer deliberately poisoning raptors, or an African tribesman killing lions to protect his cattle.
Ten years ago I was the official studbook keeper for the Scottish wildcat, and supplied many UK zoos with some of the finest stock for the UK wild reintroduction programme. But years of persecution by gamekeepers and farmers has reduced the wild pure population to an all-time low, recently estimated at around 35 individuals, from which recovery is now practically impossible – and that’s with the species having been granted full legal protection for decades!
Our indigenous wildlife needs all the protection it can get – there is only one species the planet could safely do without…
