Mod 319 was the introduction of metal covered elevators in Spitfire Is, and mod 697 was the introduction on Spitfire Vs of an improved paint scheme using DTD 517 type S…
….Frankly it is an eyesore now and needs removing.
An eyesore? Just because she needs a good wash?
Always loved the lines of these two Hawkers…

Lucky ****** even got to push my Electra Glide back in 1977…
Can’t remember if I read it in a book, or saw it in a documentary, but the story was that only one guy could produce the Spitfire’s fillet skin which blended the tail fin to the fuselage during the Battle of Britain.
It had a double compound curve, apparently very difficult to produce, and the line was that if the Germans had targetted him, it would have stopped Spit production!
It’s fascinating to watch these guys with their English wheels, special hammers, and bags of patience!
Heard some news that the BBC may still cover the races which align with UK time, with Sky covering the other half…

I gave up on Sky years ago, so that’s F1 up the spout for me.
I wonder how the sponsors will react to the news?

I think that plate is a build plate and possibly only on slightly later ‘early’ Spitfires…if that makes any sense?
I need to check my photos and references, but I think the plate you are talking about is the slightly angled little mod plate behind a perspex window further down the rudder?
I think the grey rectangular patch Jayce is talking about is usually found on the rudder above the blue part of the fin flash, seen here on a contemporary Spitfire I, and on a much later ‘teens’ Spit.
Only seems to be painted on the starboard side…

Ok originality aside, David’s photo’s, for me, raise two related, albeit rivet counterish, questions….
1) What is the little grey patch on the rudder?
2) Are you sure it’s in the right spot? As they’re usually over the blue band on the rudderstripe in just about every contemporary photo I’ve seen…. 😀
Having looked through ‘Spitfire – The History’, other Spit books, and the internet, I can only find that rectangle in the location you mention…

Looks like the top of the fuselage behind the cockpit of a Caudron C-690…
