The Swastikas look do like they’ve been oversized for a movie.
Nothing to do with the thread, but I found this amazing shot of a T6 aerobatic team called ‘The Flying Lions’ – they must have had fine height judgement…

    You mean like these?

    Or this….
Taken at Lossie by my late father during winter 1962/63.

That’s more like it! My sister’s husband used to work on Buccs in the early 1960s, and was one of the last FAA guys to vacate Lossie when the RAF took over. He used to take me in every so often to get a closer look, and I can vividly remember seeing a Mk1 in anti-flash white with that distinctive natural fibreglass ‘gold’ nose. Her pilot had taken her under some high-tension power lines, which were still wrapped around her tail fin! The groundcrews were very proud of how tough the airframe was.
Also loved the Torrey Canyon-vintage Mk2 in high gloss dark sea gray and white, but kind of lost interest when the ‘cabs’ were handed over to the RAF…

Another possibility is that Mrs Bee’s guy is genuine, but suffering from combat fatigue, and not always thinking or acting in his best interests.
Speaking as a total athiest, thank God there are still Christians around…

Seem to remember diving stories of several Sunderlands being scuttled in the inner Moray Firth after WW2 – certainly at least one sunk on its moorings at Alness…

It’s the stuff you can now buy in car shops for a high price for a very small bottle.
Some how it changes the molecular structure of the rust and turns it black.

Sounds a bit like an American method for protecting steel called ‘Parkerizing’. It used to be common, and very effective, on Harley-Davidson parts, and is still used by gun manufacturers like Glock…

From the Lancaster I, II, III & X Pilots and Flight Engineers notes…
“1. The “Automatic Pilot Mk. IV” is represented in this model with the clutch permanently engaged,
and the control **** can be selected in either the IN or SPIN positions. When the control is put in the
“IN” position, the autopilot is engaged. The autopilot will keep the wings level and maintain attitude. To
adjust the attitude, the hand control on the left panel can be used. To make turns, switch on the Autopilot
main switch, and then use the autopilot steering control to turn left or right. When the turn is completed,
switch the Autopilot main switch off.”
Here’s one on ‘S’ Sugar – other types (Lincoln?) may also have used the same…

Growing up very close to RAF Lossiemouth (HMS Fulmar as it was then), the Bucc has always been a particular favourite of mine – especially in the early 1960s anti-flash white. Thanks for posting!

I tried going online once, with my favourite flight sim, called ‘Janes WW2 Fighters’ – what a laugh!
From the chat, the other participants seemed to treat each other as if they were battle-hardened veterans occupying a wartime crewroom.
“Haven’t heard of Lt Dracothraxus for a while – is he still around?” “Didn’t you hear? He crashed and burned last month.” “Shame – he was a good officer and a damn fine wing man!”. Geez…
There didn’t seem to be much actual flying going on, either. On the first online dogfight, as soon as my FW190 was on the opponent’s tail, he promptly vanished, only to appear on my tail in an instant. When I offered to take anyone on without cheats or resets, nobody took me up!

I’ve probably watched ‘Long Way Round’ too often to be entertained by Ewan’s ‘Me, me!’ theatricals, and would have preferred if it had featured Colin on his own, but if his name brought in the punters, so much the better!
The more film we have of that wonderful generation the better though, as they are national treasures, and the few seem to become even fewer by the week…

Very, very moving, and probably the best account of the battle I’ve seen – well done to all involved.

I’d read somewhere that the RAF were tasked by the government in the 1940s to photograph the entire UK – some info on it here….
