Do you think they would rarther get nothing than to get Gripen? That would be odd…
Unlikely, because one of the reasons for adopting F414 rather than an improved RM12 is that the RM12 is reckoned to be more expensive. The original justification for developing RM12 was that it was superior to the basic F404. The F414 removed the reason for the existence of RM12.
Why propose a further development then? Add to that, would operating a unique version of 414 still be more cost-effective if it is for just a few units?
The brazilian site Poder Aéreo contacted SAAB Brasil about the version chosen by the swiss and got this answer:
Para resolver essa dúvida, entramos em contato com a assessoria de imprensa da Saab no Brasil, que contactou a Saab na Suécia e nos repassou a seguinte informação: a escolha da versão (C/D ou E/F, que é a futura versão do caça cujas características vem sendo testadas no demonstrador NG) será um dos temas da negociação que ocorrerá nos próximos meses

To solve this question, we contacted the press office of Saab in Brasil, which contacted Saab in Sweden and passed us forth the following informaton: the choice of the version (C/D or E/F, which is the future version of the Fighter whose attributes are being tested in the NG demonstrator) will be one of the topic in the negotiations ocurring in the following months
This looks like the more logical explanation to me.

The model they will acquire is not decided yet, I will transcript in the Gripen thread the info got by the brazilian site Poder Aéreo.
As I understand the model evaluated was the Gripen C/D. No AESA, no supercruise (IRST?).
We can tell it is the F414 engine (NG) by the thrust published, 22.500 lbs
Or the proposed improved RM12 they were talking about just awhile ago?
It’s the new disignation for single and twin seaters, they will enjoy NG’s demonstrator technology.
The aircraft was earlier proposed in the C/D configuration, then with NG’s technical improvements, hence the E/F designations.
Yeah, but about specs i.e: will the E/F have the new airframe?
Gripens sold will be in the E/F configurations, it has been confirmed today in a news conference.
Bus is there a known E/F specification? And there was at some point a new proposal then, or it was the E/F offer from the start?
With Switzerland selecting the Gripen, I wonder how this affects the Indian MMRCA?
It won’t?
So, they were competing with the Gripen C/D, changed the proposal to the NG spec and got the better, that’s it?
There were a hoax days ago that was promptly dispelled. It was not taken seriously anyway. I check the 2 biggest brazillian forums and 3 blogs everyday and I assure you there’s nothing to indicate that.
FX-2 wasn’t cancelled. Don’t trust any gossip. FX-2 is still on hold. Though if you ask me, my personal bet would be in cancellation, there are no offical decision in that direction, nor any signal that could make us think otherwise.
Everything is in just plain and uncomfortable silence…
Not official, but it wouldn’t be of any surprise if it does end to be true. That would be my bet in fact.
From an operational standpoint, the most critical need for superior acceleration is in the transonic range. The F/A-18 acceleration is superior to that of any chase aircraft available (F-4, F-14, F-15), from any subsonic airspeed to …
Huh? I find hard to believe that. How can it accelerate better than the F-15 having worse thrust/weight ratio AND trust/drag ratio???
Today during the press presentation that Embraer and FAB threw at Farnborough both said that there4 is absolutely no CONNECTION between the F-X2 selection and the choice of industrial partners for the new Brazilian Tactical freighter… This news in a couple of minutes blows aay the perceived advantage of the proposed AdlA purchase of the KC-390… If Dassault is already the winner of the F-X2 WHY would FAB and Embraer go to the trouble of isolating both deals from each other?
What trouble? They are isolated. In a manner that KC-390 will be developed no matter who wins FX-2. Even if NONE wins. That doesn’t mean you can’t benefit from a French offer. I don’t see why you intepret differently.
Average Brazilians accept rather normally an anti-US military purchase strategy as Jobim has been touting recently but on the other hand saying a big public “NO” to a 200 aircraft Super Tucano order for the US armed forces will certainly be seen here by the press as a very stupid move that only penalizes the national industrial star company: Embraer…
Who said no?!? There was no order! You got me lost here….
