Credible or not, it’s probably what’s going to happen. If Lula elects his sucessor (Dilma) he may opt to anouce after the elections, still in this very year. If she loses then, who knows?

So, the big movement towrds stelthines is attaching a giant belly pod? Am I the only one to find it odd? At least the “conformal tank” aproach of the Silent Eagle looks like much more efficient.

    Hi there, Noite,

Of course there was some onitial and mild general press reaction questioning the convenience and/or need for a multi-billion dollar order for the new subs. Their curiosity was probably spiked by the unforseen change of preference from the German U214 towards the French Scorpene derivative… Actually if you recall it was nothing too momentous…

I’m not here to defend the Folha newspaper by any means, but… Isn’t this just the main role one should expect from serious, reponsible journalism? To permanently cross check all the expensive investment programs decided upon by our elected officials to be payed for with our taxes? Don’t you agree?

What they did is beyond their role. For example, Mr. Janio de Freitas kept saying over and over that the building of a new naval base and shipyard were a french imposition over Brazil, despite the Navy reassuring and showing evidence that the need existed way before. If they thought the Navy commander was lying they should find evidence of it, not simply telling the same thing every week out of basis. Every article would generate a an official response from the Navy PR only to be ignored. If that was not with second intentions then i don’t know what is.

But also do remember that once the Navy PR Dept came forward and answered all these very reasonable concerns promptly all objection simply vanished overnight even at the “conservative” Folha de São Paulo newspaper.

It only vanished when the deal was done. They kept their campaign until the last minute.

As a Brazilian you do know that when the local “big press” catches a whiff of “blood in the water” they’ll immediately behave like frenzied hungry sharks untill the whole issue is uprooted and exposed. Do you agree that nothing as such ever happened in the French Submarine deal?

I think they sometimes throw blood in the water, or even catchup, just to make noise.

    Regards,

    Hammer

P.S.: I do not agree with your take on the Blog Naval editors bias on this subject.

I understand your simpathy towards a fellow blogger, and maybe i would do the same if I was in your position, even if you make a way better work in being unbiased at Base Militar. I still visit Poder Aereo and find their content overall interesting. But Galante often crosses so much the line, in stablishing his opinions, that is hard to defend him. Poder Aereo was always pro-Gripen (or anti-Rafale to tell the truth). But after his visit to Sweden it became really annoying. When someone writes “tremble infidels, it exists” it’s hard to take as unbiased. Or when he published photos of a presentation showed by SAAB and wrote that critics who said the plane didn’t exist or was incomplete would have “their arguments destroyed by it”. Really?!? By a SAAB presentation? That’s my final take on it, already spent too much on this issue.

What’s your opinion about reports saying that the operational cost gap between the two fighters will be as large as $4000 vs $14000? Does it seem realistic to you? If not, do you think this has a connection with Eliane Cantanhede (who reported the so-called leaks of the FX-2 competition) and Alexandre Galante having been invited by Saab in Sweden and treated like VIPs? Could the Brazilian Military Forces have played any role in it (by leaking exaggerated figures to make a shift in public support) ?

Even if the question wasn’t directed at myself, let me tell you this: I disregard ANYTHING that comes from Folha, since the Brazil-France dela on submarines. During the process Folha (and O Globo by the way) would keep publishing articles contrary to the choice, with many fake facts even after several oficial public statements from Brazilian Navy dismissing every one of their arguments.
As for Mr. Galante, I take everything that comes from him with a grain of salt. It’s worthy to note that his modus operandi is pretty similar with what exhibited at the time of the submarine deal, as when his editorial line changed to an opposing position, after he was invited for a a visit to HDW in Germany.

Twelve Brazilian Navy A-4 Skyhawk will be upgraded by Embraer at a cost of $140 million.[11] The upgrade will be similar to the ones done for the AMX and F-5EM aircraft of the Brazilian Air Force.

The AMX isn’t upgraded yet. The program will run on pararell with the A-4.

I wouldn’t dare translate it with authority so maybe Hammer…?

It seems to me pretty close to an endorsement.

    Good day.

It basically says that Boeing included a clause proposing to buy a penalty if the ToT doesn’t work as stated. What was offered as a warrant, now it’s been seen as an escape door, allowing them to secure the contract and later fail the ToT by paying a cheap penalty fee.

My guess is that there are strong forces in Brazil that wants to obtain nuclear weapons. This would probably trigger embargo from the US, just like it did with India. Thus Lula would like to avoid military equipment with US components at all costs, and become as independent as possible.

We never needed nuclear weapons in the past to suffer US embargoes. I think the Government simply believes we can have more space to maneuver with France than with U.S. Restrictions from U.S. were always heavy in the past, even if we never had an anti-US gov like Venezuela has now in example. Even if Obama looks like more friendly now, the trend indicates he will not be on top for more than 4 years. Someone from the Bush gang take over and it’s game over.

    Dear Member,

You have to have a good sighting at a good distance to prevent an attack by a number of semi-submersibles. It is a threat that according to the publication that ever USN officer reads, USNI Proceedings, is taking seriously.

In the unlikely event that an Israeli aircraft does get shot down is that enough for them to go to war?

Yes, if it’s a civil aircraft. Shouldn’t if it’s a military one, but probably will be enough anyway…

The Brazilian armed forces are very very late in fielding UAVs, so manufacturing them, at least to me seams absurdly farfetched at this stage.

People close to the “politicos” in Brasilia are nowe assuming that the Haitian Earthquake may delay (or be used to delay) the whole F-X2… Brazilian troops on the ground should be doubled and Brazilian Navy ships are getting ready to sail for Haiti. At this stage there is absolutely how much this continued and expanded role in the devastated Caribbean country will end up costing for Brazil. So if Lula feels that the French would not be able to deliver the aggressive pricing we demand the haitian crisis may be a political acceptable excuse to pospone this deal into the next government…

Not really. The SA-2 system is still useful, because it has an optical guideance system and pose a constant threat by that in the fine-weather conditions of the ME.

But they are really amazingly big, clumsy, hard to move and to hide. A perfect target I say. Not something Hezbollah would want in my opinion.

You are dead wrong in your assertion. Gripen NG took the clear lead in the FAB report.

What are the odds of a Sea Gripen being developed? That would fit brazilian needs perfectly in my opinion.

Who said FAB does prefer it? So far there have been no official staments?

Nope, not officials, only rumours. Mostly associated with high costs.
