Didn’t a JU88 land at RAF Lulsgate (now Britsol Airport) at some point. I recall it being before the airfield was finished.

It’s the same every year, before the show gets off the ground. There will be countless threads about the ever increasing costs, ladders on the crowd line, lack of spectator space because of hospitality, lack of toilets, people freeloading, the catering and the standard issue will it be at Legends ?

It’s like one big Ground Hog Day.

    Answered my own question :-

To everyone’s surprise the first aircraft landed on the new airfield at 06.20 on 24th July 1941. This was a Junkers 88A returning from a raid, which had apparently been confused by RAF electronic countermeasures – specifically a beacon at Lympsham which was re-radiating the signal from a Luftwaffe homing beacon at Brest.

What happened to this aircraft ?

As that was 1693 years before the first aeroplane flew I’d guess the displays were a bit sparse.

    Moggy

    And vino plentiful 😉

I’ll give you a hand to paint it if you like….

I will a little bit of time on my hands as from this evening, (leaving job) and also have a large selection of sample paints from B&Q. All we will need is the money. I don’t have a flee bitten dog, but do have a cat. I could put her on a lead and go begging in St Helier, however I draw the line at wearing a short skirt, high heels and a blonde wig to tout for business down at the docks.:)

AAIB initial report on the crash landing of Islander G-CIAS seems to indicate fuel starvation due to the aircraft’s tip tanks running dry and the crew not switching to the main tanks.

You don’t get a perspective of how lucky these guys were, without seeing the whole picture. No power, landing in the dark and down hill. Credit to their airmanship !

Sorry to resurrect a slightly aged thread but:-

Yesterday I had a call to photograph a wealthy Jersey resident who has just given over £100m into Trust for charitable purposes. The job was for The Times and they wanted images of this Gentleman, David Kirsch, with his collection of Zeppelin memorabilia. Unfortunately he sold the collection off a few years ago and the only remaining piece he has, is a superb model of a Zeppelin that bombed London which hangs from his garage roof.

However as we walked, with the reporter, up into his garden we were talking about his interest in airships and mine in aviation and he mentioned Cardington and the fact that the R100 and R101 were built there and that he had, had pieces relating to both in his collection. We walked on a little bit longer and he announces “of course I own one of the hangars at Cardington”. I asked “which one”, but he couldn’t remember, but said “I have been trying to sell it for some time but have had no takers”. Not sure of the asking price, but if you know of anyone looking for a rather large detached property !

Has the Isle of Wight sunk? :dev2:;)

But seriously, Ian, if you really do have an idea where the Channel Isles ones are, we’d be delighted to hear more.

At least one was located back in the 1970’s and part of a prop brought to the surface. I spoke to the diver 15 years ago and by then the prop was no more than dust. He reckoned the aircraft he had found was McPhail’s.

However a couple of weeks ago I was stopped by a chap who knew I was interested in the aircraft, he claimed the one that had been found was Woodward’s as it was relatively intact, which stands to reason, as Woodward was seen to make a controlled landing where as McPhail was seen to go in at speed after a direct hit.

Unfortunately neither of these two individuals could/would provide me with a clue as to where the wreck lies. Though after 70 years in the Channel/Atlantic with the currents around these islands, I wouldn’t hold much hope of there being much left.

Haven’t a clue, but not nearly as much as a Whirlwind one…

Got an idea where there maybe one or two, I’ll dig out my mask, snorkel and flippers.

Dammit, this cleverdick quoted your post mistakenly; augsburgeagle’s one was the one I had issues with. Not to worry – your post was fine, sorry.

ps the asterisks are the word b0llocks

Never ceases to amaze me the Cleverdicks who can’t spot b’llocks from complete b’llocks 🙂
