There clearly needs to be some intervention, but as said by someone else the situation isn’t black and white at the moment.
But the intervention should not some from us, or the USA. It should be down to the Arab League and neighbouring Mediterranean countries.
Russia and China only seem to be making the situation worse, which is to be expected given both of those countries reputations concerning Human Rights.

The models that stand some sort of comparison are the Netherlands, Denmark, Norway and Sweden. Their Monarchies are the very epitome of scaled down restraint. Consequently they retain their populations goodwill and support.
John Green
Our monarchy sees support from over 80% of our population, I doubt that the other countries monarchies that you mention are any more popular. Our Monarch is also the head of the Commonwealth, and much more of a public figure than other European royalty. There really is nothing wrong with the amount of money we give them.
The houses and estates you mention are their property, so their ownership really is of no concern to us.
How much do you reckon Air Force one costs the American public every year? I would imagine its many, many times what our royal expenditure is every year on its own.

You can have a pop at Gordon if you like, but Labour did nothing like the damage that Georgy Porgy and Camercon et al have achieved in no time flat.
What???
Look at the enormous national debt they ran up! The coalition have been tasked with dealing with a horrific situation that the Labour gov created. They are not dealing with it very well, but at least they’re not suggesting we try and borrow our way out of debt, and end up like Greece, Spain et al.
Unfortunately, none of the main parties have the kind of leadership we need right now, which is why you’ll see parties like the UKIP rise in popularity.

You, like many others miss the point. We can’t afford the ostentation.
John Green
We can. Beyond the doom and gloom that is spouted in the tabloids, in the grand scale of things we’re doing okay.
But if we changed the system, so that money to the monarchy was given on a voluntary basis, I’m certain they would be many, many times wealthier than they are now.
They are an integral, and essential, part of who we are.

It’s not just the Monarchy. I will not widen the debate but monumental fiscal waste is endemic in this country. Good housekeeping is a concept that is hardly understood. As a nation we need to get back to “watching the pennies while the pounds look after themselves” and this should begin with the Monarchy.
John Green
Spot on.

I don’t take issue with any of your facts re tourism. In fact I thought that it was our third largest source of national revenue and not fifth. But, it is not and never has been Royal family dependant. Tourists come here because we are seen internationally as a rather large Disneyland theme park.

Yes, you are right. I am conscious that money does indeed matter. The Nation is broke. I accept that to many of my countrymen and women the Monarchy is important. The question is one of scale. We do not need a Monarchy which enjoys such an expensively unrestricted lifestyle. Police protection units for minor Royals – whatever next ? We’re no longer the No.! power in the world, we are much reduced and so should be the Monarchy.
John Green
The state of the country’s economy is nothing to do with the Monarchy though, the decline of our country and it’s current state is purely the work of elected politicians.
If you want to find a justifiable way to reduce public spending, I would first look to the NHS. It no longer function, and is haemorrhaging money at every seam.
The excess of the monarchy is an important part of it, the pomp and ceremony being a part (however minor) of what keeps our monarchy the focus of the world. Don’t be under the impression that the Royals haven’t also had spending cuts. A couple of examples are the loss of the Royal Yacht, and the scale of the RAF flypasts during the Diamond Jubilee (even 10 years ago they were much larger)
Without our Monarchy, we would just be another insignificant republic. They probably cost us in the region of £5 each per year (adjusted for tax payers only and the addition of security) and IMO that’s £5 well spent. How much do you pay to have your bins collected and your local roads serviced every month?
IMO the Queen is a national treasure and a bargain, she also has executive powers that stop some crackpot dictator coming to power.
She represents our national identity and does a damn good job of doing so in my opinion.
