Interesting point of the trivia; the Republic of Korea Air Force has 3 F-6s at least and 1 H-5 Beagle. 2 F-6s defected from north Korea and one from China. I think they might also have one more PRC one that defected but I’ve only seen three in person but heard they have another one. The H-5 is also a PRC defector and currently resides at the ROKAF Academy. One F-6 is at their training command HQ, one in the Seoul War Museum, and one at their fighter weapon school. The ROKAF also has some Polish-built An-2s that they still fly for training.

Seems the recent crash of the ROKAF T-50B was due to a maintenance error. The mechanic didn’t do a proper preflight and forgot to remove some safety involving the attitude control system. Still, I wonder why the pilot didn’t eject…

    ] mandatory drinking

    Drink and fly? 8(

Similar to most Korean businesses, ROKAF officers are expected to go out to afterwork drinking/dinner with their peers a few times a week. If they are have alert duty or early flight the next day, they don’t drink but still should go. A ROKAF friend of mine volunteered to be the aide-de-camp to the US 7th AF commander because he was tired of drinking so much in his squadron.

One of my ROKAF friends only has something like 10 of the original 80 fighter pilots left in his year group. Their junior officers call them colonel already because all ten will get promoted because their are more slots than people. The ROKAF has been asking for a pilot bonus for the last 15 years or so. Of course, it’s the ROKAF’s poor standard of living (constant moves, substandard on-base housing, mandatory drinking, too much alert duty, etc.) that causes them to get out…

PS the RF-4Cs are to be replaced shortly by RF-16s (podded system).

Wow, I know MGen Choi! Sorry to hear this happened to him as he is a very nice person and a good officer. I was glad to hear that he wasn’t injured.

On the 21st a ROKAF major general accidentally ejected himself from a ROKAF F-15K prior to takeoff while on the runway.

I think the USAF should be the Korean T-50 to replace the T-38 and then buy the F-50 version to replace the Air National Guard/Air Force Reserver F-15/16s for the air sovereignty mission. When those AFRC F-15/16s age out, we’re not going be able to replace them with F-35s with the way our budget is going…

    Apparently they crashed into a mountain… 🙁

Two Korean Air Force fighters missing

Two Korean Air Force F-5 fighters went missing at around 12:25 p.m. today some 20 kilometers west of Gangneung air base in Gangwon, a defense official said.

The official said that two aircraft took off from the base five minutes earlier to conduct air maneuvers. One and two pilots were on board in each F-5E and F-5F fighter.

Whether the pilots are dead or not is not yet known.

The Air Force urgently dispatched two HH-60 search and rescue helicopters to search for the missing pilots and aircraft.

Apparently their first female F-16 pilot caused a stir last year when she engaged to marry a maintenance sergeant. One of the ROKAF personnel officers I know asked me for copies of our regulations of fraternization as a result.

Here’s a comprehensive list of pilot defections from Wikipedia:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Cold_War_pilot_defections

I would say that almost 90% of defections were flown in MiGs, the MiG-31 being the only MiG type that has never seen a defection. Other interesting defector aircraft are the Cuban Cessna 402 and the Iranian F-14.

Hmm, that list doesn’t have two Taiwanese F-5 defections. I heard in one case it was an F-5F and the guy in the backseat didn’t want to defect. After wrestling with the controls they flew out over the sea again and the rear seat guy ejected and then the defector when on to crash land in China.

The Brazilians have some really neat cockpit composite armor for their Tucano that is proof against 12.7mm rounds. A Brazilian AF friend of mine showed me some video and pictures of it. It would be a great addition to a new OV-10 if the Brazilians would part with it…

While we are on the subject of OV-10s, I was once was on a court martial juror with a F-16 pilot who had previously flown OV-10s. He told me that they used to fly from Clark AB, Philiphines to Hickam AFB, Hawaii in their OV-10s. He said if they reached a certain point in the flight and the head winds were too strong, they would have to turn around and try again the next day. I can’t imagine how long it must take to fly from the PI to Hawaii….

I wonder how modernized Broncos would compare to Texan IIs and Super Tucanos. Well at least view should be much better.

And it would have two engines. Much better for surviveability. The main thing the Bronco would need would better anti-MANPADs equipments like DIRCM or Comet pod, etc. The USMC lost one in Desert Storm to a MANPADS IIRC.

I remember reading a story of how a Bronco landed on the Ho Chi Minh trail in Laos to pick up a Special Forces team. Couldn’t do that with a AT-6 either.

The JASDF received at least some AMRAAMs for testing purposes but then decided to go with their own BVR missile. At least this is what a friend of mine who is a JASDF F-15J pilot told me.

I sat through a briefing by a ROKAF pilot who works transport stuff at ROKAF HQ and I came away with the impression they were leaning towards an airliner for this requirement or maybe I just misunderstood due to my bad Korean… Or they might have come to their senses.
