Correct – Destination Newcastle College Aviation Academy. Pics to follow in a new thread in a few weeks.
BAC 1-11 on the back of a truck heading North on the A1(M) near Newcastle. Wonder where it was going?;)
If you fancied donating or long-term-loaning them out, NEAM (well, me actually) would love to include them in the restoration of the only F86D in the country…… don’t suppose you have the rest of the cockpit to match?…
The snake emblem is probably local fokelore from the Blackadder series as opposed to having any pinch of reality. Blackadder was a flier (DFC!) and scored one or two kills…..

I’ve not heard of the ‘Coalminers’ reference, BUT it would make sence. The closest coal mine to Usworth was Castletown Colliery – approximately 200 yards away from the airfield – with perhaps a dozen others within 10 miles.
This rumour could have started with Sqn Ldr Blackadder at Usworth. Allegedly he wore a set of black flying overalls embroidered with a snake coiled round a dagger- it was his trademark. Such traditions are easilly extended and carried on over the years. Best person to ask is Thunderbird167.
Incidently Blackadder allegedly later became a lecturer at a school in Newcastle and may have been the inspiration behind the famed Blackadder series by Rowan Atkinson. 😎
How much is truth remains to be seen
edit: The truth has been seen, and none of it appears above.
Mine are Jack aged 22 months and natasha, six. Natasha recognises Lancasters, Spitfires, Vulcans , JP’s and a range of civvie airlines. She has even tried her hand at a spot of light restoration (well, washing). Jack is obsessed. One of his first words was ‘copter’ and now has extended into ‘plane’. The silly sod keeps looking out of the living room window and yelling ‘Plane!’ in broad Geordie (We are on Newcastle’s flightpath). Already he has a model spitfire above his bed and a Lancaster painting on his wall. Mental.:D
At the risk of being dragged from this place while attempting to keep my body parts inside……
How many museums actually have the space / money / interest in salvaging what is essentially rotten timber? From what I’ve heard, the structure is so fragile it would be a huge risk moving it anywhere. The only substantial portion is the centre spar – which could hardly be classed as a centrepiece in anyone’s museum. Perhaps this one would be best left to the die-hard enthusiasts -Cees, Karl ((57 rescue)) or those museums with bags of cash and big storage areas ((Hendon))?
Secondly, what would you do with it -too far gone to preserve as-is, and if it were restored, what original structure would be left? Would it be worth it or has this relic slipped beyond help?
Lots of questions, designed to provoke a response.
The wheel & tyre was / is @ NEAM, Sunderland
We have a Shackleton (I’ll need to check on that) one, and one from the Valletta (Wellington pattern) but to be honest I’ve not seen one from a Halibag.
Try Cosford – they have one…
Thats right – G-ANSD was the un-camoflaged one of a pair of Aztecs used. A pic of her on the set would be brilliant…. not that anyone would have pointed a camera at an Aztec when there were 11 Daks, several Harvards and a couple of Austers on the same patch of tarmac……
……
You could try contacting the Secretary of the BAPC – he has his own Whirlwind and has worked on them even longer than me.
Bravoalpha… I find that VERY hard to believe….:p
EAP is at Loughborough with a rumoured move to Cosford. They will aledgedly get a Typhoon prototype from Cranwell in return.
Cranwell (I’m led to believe) have a Typhoon prototype. The others will probably be at Warton and its European equivalents.
😀
soooo predictable….
