I concur with all that has been said so far. We have an ongoing project of getting out aircraft tyres filled with a high density foam, but as a short term solution the tyres are painted with ‘Tyre Black’ and rotated as often as possible. So far we have completed the lightning tyres (removed and foamed), with the Vulcan’s on the hitlist next. Its an expensive exercise though…..
There’s not many disused WW2 airfields which are in a position to be used for historic aviation now. Driffield has been pretty mangled by its previous MOD owners, so an effective airfield to be developed there would have cost untold millions. It is a shame, especialy since I lived in Driff for a number of years, but look at what you still have in East Yorkshire. Leconfield is completely intact and with careful use of a JCB to remove the roundabouts, it could be used again when and if the army finish with it. There are dozens of old airfields in East Yorkshire, and all are prime development land. Aside from Leconfield, and Pocklington are there any viable airfield sites for preservation?
Given the deterioration of Driffield, is it worth preserving? That said, are the hangars and other buildings to be demolished? What exactly is being lost by the development?
Sorry for not responding til so late in the day….. work followed by Nintendo Wii is not a good combination….:D
Thanks guys… I did get an aviation related present though – the Jarrod Cotter book : BBMF 50 Years of Flying. Signed by the air and ground crews at the Lincs Lanc open day last year, AND James Douglas hudson DFC (100 Sqn HW-R Phantom of the Ruhr)… 😎
I’d love a shack at NEAM – our nearest 4 engined piston heavy is either a lancaster in Lincolnshire or a replica halifax at York… SADLY completely impractical. IF we could barter a deal to move the whole aircraft (insanity anyway), the local morons would set fire to it AND we’d bankrupt ourselves moving it so would never be able to restore it. Still, I’d have any cockpit from there…..
Like Bruce said – sometimes you just have to let some examples slip away….
As for the rest of the collection – there are no real rareties, so who would rescue them?…. perhaps a rich eccentric with a mountain of sheet aluminium….
I’ve got a seemingly servicable Halifax fuel tank that I can’t get rid of… so a piece like that doesn’t stand much chance! Shame too…:(
Nice article there LL, well done!
Like I said, all down to Scary and semi-hogg…. I wish I could take credit for it!
Now all we have to do is persuade the local council (our landlords) that they cannot afford to loose us in the same way Bournemouth lost a valuable asset not that long ago………
Lindy’s Lad – please check your PMs….ta 🙂
As above…. good to see you on here!
LL, please check your PM.
read and replied. Thanks!
We are cautiosly doing exactly what you have suggested at NEAM – our Saudi Lightning F53 is being made to represent a local (ish) F6 in a rare scheme – if not unique. The scheme is completely wrong for the aircraft, but it makes an otherwise boring exhibit a little more public-friendly.
Here’s a few of my random thoughts…
Most museums will have a policy of something similar to ‘museum aircraft will be preserved/restored in a scheme worn by the particular aircraft’.
I agree that FSM’s can be made to represent any squadron, but I do disagree that RARE aircraft such as the Sunderlands should wear un-authentic markings.
Sally B is another good case – she is more widely known for wearing the film scheme she is in now, as opposed to the original markings she wore hilst in service. Would a re-paint into a completely different scheme partially alienate some of her followers?
Imagine the uproar if XH558 were to adopt a new sceme and represent XL319….
I agree in principle to the tempory markings thing – currently there are no aircraft representative of 55 OTU or 57 OTU of Usworth or Eshott….either would help our advertising…
Its certainly a good thread – lots to think about!
…….. That was a nice connection with Sarah Spence as well!
All thanks to Linda Ross and Steve D. (Semi-Hogg),
My hat off to all the NEAM staff & supporters! Wish I live closer to join you 🙂
Are you still in need for G-BAGJ’s previous livery pics?
I believe we have some pictures of her in her former lives, but the more the merrier! Photo’s can be forwarded to either info@neam.org.uk marked for attention of John Applegarth, or to me direct – PM me and I’ll send my e-mail address. Hard copies should be sent to me direct – again PM me and I’ll supply the details.
As ever, thank you.
LL Are you going to weather seal the new skin panels? Great Job by the way!
Oddly enough, that photo was taken when we arrived on Sunday. By The evening, most of those panels had been sealed. When they were fitted, they were given lashings of JC5A, plus a protective strip fitted over the joints. They should last longer than the rest of the aeroplane. The canopy was sealed too. The strips don’t look pretty, but they will be invisible when we get the paint on.
Yesterdays update pictures
As promised some photos!
The delta Lady’s skin repairs (Happy 25th anniversary!)
Sarah Spencer re-united with her father’s seat
The Gazellery….
Lightning looking finless and spineless….
It was a stunning machine – are there plans to build another, or do the CAA have a big downer on the type in light of the crashes? I know deep down that it just isn’t financially viable to operate one on the show circuit, but as vfar as beautiful aircraft go, its right up near the top…
What time are things happening tomorrow?
Steve
From 10am I believe. I won’t be there, Linda Ross is taking the helm. Some of us have to work…..
