Lindys Lad
Just an idea but you or someone at the museum might want to contact the scaffolding companies to see if they would be interested in donating scaffolding etc to help with upcoming work on the vulcan. Over here, we haverental equipment companys that usually have older scaffolding that they can donate to a good cause maybe the same in the uk?
Tennis court – what the Vulcan is currently stood on, and had previously sunk into. Most of it is covered in long grass…. and gravel, all of which have to move. The junkies need somewhere tidy to kill themselves!
As for scaffy companies – good call!
I can campaign and pass all the comments upwards, but unfortunately, I’m not the boss….
…yet;)
While I remember, this is what I’m aiming for for XL319 (without the snow…)
Two fine gentlemen. Lets hope they don’t delete ALL my posts….;) Well done guys.
Ever thought that places are closed for a reason? Private property is private, and should remain that way. Personally, if some trespassers came onto my farm with its knackered control tower, they’d be rice gunned. ‘explorers’ or not.
I’m sorry if you are an ‘urban explorer’ and you feel different, but lets take Long Marsdon for example – ‘urban explorers’ post photos of the inside of the aircraft having illegally gained access to the site, and mysteriously parts of the aircraft turn up on ebay. It may be a co-incidence, but it looks very bad indeed.
In law, ‘exploring’ is referenced under ‘breaking and entering’
(oh, I don’t own a farm or a control tower…)
The plans for this aircraft are pretty much cut and dried. So far, she will be coloured as a painted F6. Much later, when she is due to be restored fully, or due new colours, it will be possible to revert her back to the Saudi scheme. As it stands now, she has RAF roundels and warnings paralleled with Saudi warnings. She is NOT in full Saudi regalia, and does not have the controversial sign on her tail, only the red, white and blue of the RAF.
it will be easier to preserve her in paint rather than bare metal, and I think that is the point rather than absolute authenticity. be assured that the current markings have been recorded and filed with her history, so that should the occasion arise, a Saudi scheme could be re-applied.
And Brittania, no I didn’t get there today, but I am going tomorrow and Friday to kill some weeds and find a tennis court!
nobody knows! I don’t even know if they have been contacted with a serious offer…
I think you have yourself a Mk 1. Big Vern who posts on this Forum is the kiddie for Bloodhound gen. Where is your missile now located?
OK, to me its a big white pointy thing… Its the gate guard at North East Aircraft Museum. Its being renovated and stuck on a pole. By the way, anyone got a pir of rear fins they would care to donate?….. just two…:D

IFAIRC it is not so cut and dry as “you can’t” with the Saudi government, a quick chat with Coventry Air Museum will help you with this matter as they have their Saudi two seater restored and painted in Saudi colours (albeit not totaly origional).
The way I see it NEAM has a unique oportunity to display an origional Saudi jet in origional Saudi markings, it would be a travesty to rub out and paint over these as it was one of the reasons why I travelled to NEAM to see her, what with all thats going on though I think another visit is in order.
I am not about to start harping on about what should be done with the Lightning as ultimately it is down to manpower and money, if she is painted up then so be it as at least she will have some attention and will be protected for years to come.

Get up here, and make it quick! I think long term preservation of the airframe is the key priority though… I have almost managed to dissuade the management (with the help of others!) not to put the Canberra in bomber colours! As far as I’m aware, she is the last TT18 in target tug colours. Please correct me if I am wrong….
The Saudi government has quite clear policies about restoring a lightning in their colours – you can’t!
With this in mind, it has been decided that our lightning F-5whatsit (sorry- civvie engineer, not a clue about silver pointy jets….) will be painted as an F6 representing a UK aircraft. 5 and XI were just sqn colours being toyed with… more alternatives (with pics) please. I like the 23 Sqn idea – post apic…. Please be advised, its not my project so don’t take it out on me! At least the thing will be serviced and repaired.
Re Vulcan tyres- flat and soggy. Not a trace of concrete!!!!! phew!
Update 23 July 2007
If it is the same guy he had a website for 319 which is sadly no longer running. Say Hi to him for me ….
Mustn’t be the same guy. Spooky though…
Anyway, time for a quick update.
The rather sad looking Bloodhound missile at the gate is being restored! A BAre metal repaint has begun and is progressing well. Not bad for a monday!
Vulcan news – The cleaning was completed today (apart from some bits which we can’t reach yet, such as the top and sides of the nose…). The interior was scrubbed and hoovered, and is looking alot better. Eventually, the plan is to restore the panels, etc; but we need to wait for the spar news before spending money….
Lightning news – The current markings (Saudi) are being recorded and archived and as soon as that is complete, a repaint into F-6 colurs will begin. The thoughts so far are either 5 or 11 Sqn. Thoughts on particular colour schemes? (something colourful please… oh, no bare metal either!)
Mystere – the tail art will be applied this week, and we are waiting for some silver paint for part of the undercarriage, then all that remains are the standard markings and roundels…. NEARLY THERE!
We are gearing up for Jeeps and Jets (8-9 Sept), which is selling tickets for the night time do like no tomorrow – Get them quick!
Restoration of the Firestreak missile is coming along nicely, and is being turned into a donation pot….
finally, the Dragonfly has had its roundels partially applied, and it should take its place in the display hangar soon.
Cheers for now,
John
Oh I dream of having a Vulcan like that… What a beauty! She looks fab guys and gals… a credit to your skill and dedication.
happy birthday! (How many birthdays do moggy’s get in one year? – cat years?)
I have been informed by TVOC that the cockpit is allocated, as are the engines, and several other big bits. I’ll leave it to TVOC to say what they intend for the gutted remains – all I can say, is that even the last remenants of structure will be put to good use! She will ahve saved alot of other Vulcans by the time the final axe falls. (Not until after 558’s first flight I hasten to add.
Get the info from TVOC. I can’t speak for them, and won’t…! Everything else is conjecture..
I wonder if you could try and get in touch with James Carruthers? HE was heavily involved with the vulcan.
That will be the guy who was there today doing the survey… former Newcastle Aviation Academy Student (the year above me!)
