Replica project? I deny all knowledge.

Lets just set with the facts for now… I’m an aircraft engineer, not far from otaining an EASA B1 licence, ex-RAF and involved with old aircraft since I was 15… I do have plans to form my own engineering company in the future with a sideline in restoration / reproductions. For me, people like John Romain are completely inspiring. As I see it, with finacial backing and the facilities to match, anything is possible. Whirlwinds interest me greatly, and so far I have had promising results in my quest for information in addition to what you see here. Do not jump the gun and quote this as a replica project, or even any kind of project to resurect a Whirly to any condition, static or otherwise. I am merely gathering information with a view to consider the feasiblility of one sometime in the future. I know certain people on here will have something to say (negative) about shouting about building an extinct flying type… but sod them! Who knows, 20 years down the line there will no doubt be some new and previously extinct airframes gracing our museums and skies. All I have to say is DH Hornet, Boulton Paul projects (several of…), I have a dream, just no way of implimenting it yet…. but with your (all of you!) help, who knows!

    Keep it coming!

Very good. How big are the originals, and what is your medium? Is there a thread on here for aviation artists? If not, its about time there was. (See also, my avatar – part of a much bigger painting)…

sometimes a bit of sponteneity gets better results, and often new information…. but thanks for the steer…. I will look and learn….

Wow… the things you didn’t know. Sorry, I’m just amazed that the Vimy’s have survived. I’m impressed. Just got to buy a train ticket to London… and a plane ticket to Oz…

A Stirling would be great, also a flying Halibag (640 Sqn colours for me). In fact, flying examples of a hampden or whitley would make fine additions to my hangar with a new build whirlwind in it:D ……..

Unless someone has thought ‘Twin Pioneer’ mean two identical ‘Pioneers’…. stranger things have happened…. morons….

Just an idea I’ve toyed with during quiet moments.

Take a fairly basic extinct airframe but one that would arouse some interest (and yes, I know, not a good starting point)…oh, and a complete set of drawings (highly unlikely I know).

What does it actually consist of? Tens of thousands of reasonably simple light alloy (or wooden) components, several thousand more complex components, and thousands of rivets, nuts, bolts, washers and other standard parts.

Now given a large (infinite) number of aircraft enthusiasts and a couple of decades…

…anybody see where I’m going with this?

WooHoo! You have seen the light! Someone somewhere will read the many posts on this topic, and store them in their grey matter. sometime down the line we may have the Whirlwind / TSR2 / HP42, etc….. I wish.

As for the whirlwind… does anything actually exist any more? one engine and some photos is not a good starting point. That said, the words ‘Vickers Vimy’ spring to mind. Can you imagine 40 years ago, if someone came to you and said ‘ I’m going to build an extinct aircraft from scatch, fly it across the atlantic, to australia, and to south africa…. oh, and its made from wood…..’

you can count me in if you feel like having a go at it 😀 😀 😀

Give me some money, a hangar, some ex-TSR2 mechs, a foundry, and a conservative government…………….

DCollins…. true, it has been discussed many times before, I just ran a search for it…. terribly sorry! 😉

I remember it in the ’90’s….. a bit different then though…. (The Javelin was still there albeit guarding the gate)

Considering the huge fan base this aircraft has generated over the last 40+ years why has no-one thought or attempted to build a replica of this?

I would have said cost / complex aircraft / etc, but there is an avro arrow now…….. the main thing I guess is the fact that 2 survive, only 1 ever flew, and it was never in service. That said, I’d build one if I had the money/time/space/skill….

Stupid question time…. Where exactly was the old aerodrome? I’ve tried to find traces of it on Google earth without success… I’ve got the new airfield…

special dispensation sure rings a bell… compare it to the venerable shack… Air Atlantique can fly their shack in America on the experimental register, but can’t fly it over here in the UK… This seemingly has nothing to do with the compatability of registers (see P-38 Glacier Girl this/next week), rather more to do with the CAA having a major wobbler as soon as anyone tries to fly something bigger than a Cessna 172… In theory, the Vulcan could fly in America provided the FAA said it could… the same goes for transiting airspace, ie. French / German / Australian. More common types (Spits, hurricanes, Hunters, etc) will have approval with the relevant CAA and EASA already, but getting approval for a Vulcan?……… may be met with silence followed by laughter…. Bet the Argentine Aviation Authority would have a major downer on the Vulcan…:diablo:

pipe dream time again… how about an empire class flying boat? Could rake in the cash doing carribbean ‘cruises’…

Back to near reality… why have none of the new build FW190’s or Me262’s had much of an impact yet? Is red tape getting in the way again?
