Lovely piccies and planes. All of them and on your other posts. I take it that the next AAD will be in 2008 but is Ysterplatt likely to have an airshow in 2007? I was there in 2003 and it was really great.

There has been some speculation on the future of Ysterplaat, but it seems as if the annual aitshow will still take place towards the end of 2007.

    The end is nigh

I was talking with workmate today who is connected with the crew.

Apparently the pilot has passed his medical and they are taking her up for a photo shoot this weekend. They are also making a documentary about Pelican 22.

Thereafter one more flight is planned to ‘bomb’ Robben Eiland with the ashes of a former team member.

There are fewer than 50 hours left on the airframe. The SAAF seems reluctant to allow private sponsorship to keep her in the air longer.

I must repeat that all the above is not first hand, but the workmate seems to be well connected and is attending this weekend’s flight.

    Shell Sponsorship

Thunder City is a private concern and withut Shell’s sponsorship, I doubt whether they would support airshows at all. Thanks Shell…..

Excellent stuff! I love seeing helicopters at airshows, there aren’t enough displays of this type in the USA.

I especially like your photo of the three load-carrying helicopters in formation, I don’t see how it could be more perfect – the helicopters are beautifully aligned, and even the loads are nicely aligned in reverse direction to the helicopters!

    Richard.

Notice how the blades of each is cutting the rope of the one in front?

I share your appetite for 558, and Vulcans in general – recently finished this in oils

Stunning painting! Love the sky. I would love a white Victor against such a brooding sky. We only have boring blue sky here 🙂

    Blimey… they’re er… very yellow!

They were painted yellow as part of an advertsing campaign for a local cellphone company, MTN. The colour is a play on the ‘y’ello, y’ello’ you say when you answer the phone. They slogan is ‘Y’ello Summer’ which was supposed to welcome summer.

Problem is that we never saw the Hunters used as such. Only a brief appearance at one airshow. Expensive…..

As far as I know, the 70-300VR is not out yet. Wait for the reviews.

I have found the Sigma 50-500, Nikkor 70-200VR with 1.4TC or the 80-400VR to be ideal. The VR allows you to shoot at 1/250 to blur the props.

I suggest you use a lens with VR. To get the props to ‘spin’ you need to get the shutter speed to around 1/250. This makes it difficult to get the pictures sharp when shooting handheld. Look at the 80-400VR (slow but I like mine), 70-200VR with 1.4TC or the 200-400VR. The primes also work, but I found that being able to zoom very beneficial.

I first saw it 2 years ago at Swartkop. I thought that some of the SAAF pilots would be displaying by now.
