There was a short grass strip cut outside the peri-track, but as Dave suggests, I don’t think it is used now(?)

Local airfields might know more – Shipdham or Lt Snoring….

I may be wrong here but the initials DP and the name Mr Brothers ring a bell.

Might I know who you folks are?

    Neal

We know who we are and we know who you are, do you know who you are and more to the point how do we know that you know who you are?? 🙂 🙂 😀 😀

I wouldn’t have been in that position if you hadn’t insisted on going to the lousy nightcub, anyway what were you up to with Vicky J the solicitor in that alley then? Then infringing the crowd line next day I dunno…..

Ok, I admit to a bit of infringement but that was after Chicago’s, honest m’lud..
Lots of things I have done but infringing the crowd line isn’t one of them!!
By the way, were you ever allowed back in after the bouncers asked you to leave? At least we weren’t in the Bowthorpe bogs!! 😀 😀 😀

    QUOTE]

They had to get someone in to control you otherwise you would be turning right into historic aviation after telling your wingmen you were turning left into GD 😀

Keep up wingmen….!! At least I can turn left and right! I wasn’t the one in a compromising postion downstairs in Chicago’s with some ‘sort’……!!

Just been looking at pictures of your Stearman on the futureshox website. What a nice looking aircraft. Can’t wait to see it for real, when can I see it then?

Phil didn’t tell me he had a girlfriend when he said we could go to Leicstershire to see his Harvard!

Who’s is the Yak and what is the other little aeroplane?

BR – yes both sides of swanton have been closed to flying for a few years now – the T2 was used for furniture storage I believe. There was a small rumour, recently, that a group from another Norfolk airfield were going to resurrect the place but I don’t know of any progress.

Melh, will PM to sort a convenient time, probably mid feb if its not too cold!!!
Yak is being flown by dale and its based at Norwich, the other aircraft is a Cassutt racer, based in Suffolk.
Sorry, I’m not in a position to comment on PE

Thanks Melvyn, Moggy, AF and Dave,

That should all help me quite a lot.

When are you going to be at Norwich Dave? I would love a ride with you in your Stearman, You guys are great, another guy called Phil Earthy has offered me the chance to see his Harvard. Do you know him at all? I can’t wait to meet you guys and start learning to fly.
    What colour is your Stearman?
Can you PM me with your Norwich friends details please?

    Melanie

    Yup, PM sent.

Stearman is blue and yellow, for pics do a google search for G-NZSS, plenty on there, also futureshox.org has aviation pics, search rougham and elmsett for formation pics (dale is flying the Yak).

Yes I do know Phil Earthey, he also flies at Dale’s place as does his girlfriend…

I have been contemplating learning to fly for a long while and now find myself in the happy position where I can afford the time and lessons.

The problem is there seems to be a lot of conflicting advice when you telephone different schools.

Can anyone help with advice/suggestions and help recommending a reputable flying school in Norfolk or Suffolk.

    Thanks
    Melanie

Mel, One of my formation guys, Dale has a flying school at Norwich, an excellent pilot and instructor, many people have commented that he is very patient as an instructor. He is not an hour builder and doesn’t want to fly airliners!!
The lessons include landing fees and are around the same price as the smaller fields although of course at norwich you get to mix it with the ‘big boys’!!
If there are circuits to be done, he does a quick transit to beccles where he has an arrangement at minimal cost.
The aircraft are in excellent condition, well maintained and they are his own.
I am often in and around Norwich so if you fancy a bit of ‘front seat’ Stearman time, I’m sure we could sort something out…

If the internal surface is good enough, see if there are any witness marks as to how far the piston came down the bore – then measure the bore and the stroke, a quick calculation gives you the swept volume of the cylinder, multiply by the amount of cylinders (9) and you should get either a 985 or a 1340 displacement (whatever their respective displacements are – usually measured in cubic inches)……

    Dave,

I have seen a Citroen turbo diesel ‘run away’ like that – as you described it was burning the turbo & engine lubricating oil – smoke went from white, to brown to blue to black then BANG! Fortunately the driver was running away from it at the time waving the ignition key. When it first started my thoughts were “who is using a disk cutter in the car park”

Must have been a funny sight Paul!! I haven’t seen one ‘blow up’ but I would have laughed my socks off if I had…

[QUOTE=Bigglesworth]Avtur doesn’t have that nasty red dye stuff in it either Dave… 😀

We (family) had two great big old Ruston Hornsby generators that ran on sump oil provided by the local RAF base, they would run on anything…
There is (atleast one) converted Ford Festa in Germany which actually burns its lubricating oil, or rather the fuel was used to lubricate the engine- the result was much reduced wear on components, and no oil changes to worry about.

Ooooh.. that nasty red stuff – I’m sure there’s an antidote!!!!

Seriously tho, if you had Ruston Generators, you must also be aware that the Chieftain tanks could run multifuel although they were spark ignition engines.

At work, on more than one occasion, I have come across worn diesel engines sucking sump oil through the breather system and ‘running away’ at full chat with no hope of stopping them as the diesel manifold system is ‘open’ ie no throttle.
The most recent was a few months back when a Rover 400 turbo-diesel snapped the shaft inside the turbo, the free play at the seals allowed full pressure engine oil to travel through the intake system and into the cylinders – the engine ‘ran away’, the car had to be stopped by braking to a standstill in fifth gear, the engine was pulling like a train right down til it stalled – I didn’t dare dip the clutch!!!
