Yup, I live four miles from there, still quite a bit to see from the ground and in the air….

Two Stearman books by Martin Bowman have pics of wartime examples.

Alternatively you could contact The Arnold Scheme at Leigh on Sea, they have a number of members who did their primary training on Stearmans in the US and Canada from 1942 onwards, they are always happy to talk about their experiences… They have my utmost respect!

    Lovely pics crazymainer, outstanding aircraft.

    Yak11 fan.
My aircraft is a 1943 N2-S5, it has the original engine and prop and the rest of the aircraft is all original, no damage history so all of its components, wings etc are the ones it came out of the factory at Witchita with. I have all the logs/history from day one, it has had very few owners, including one for 30 years. It has been recovered once in 1974 (with irish linen) and its due to be done again this winter. You are more than welcome to look around it, it has a more ‘lived in’ feel (!) than the excellent pics show above.

No. The bodywork was all polished aluminium with a black chassis, the bonnet was very long (obviously!!) without any sides so that the engine was ‘on show’. The exhaust pipes were attached at a pair of manifolds and travelled the length of the vehicle like two drain pipes (no silencers). It had two side by side seats and a manual gearbox. If you ‘search’ Chailey you may find something, there was definitely a website about the show.
Incidentally I read a newspaper report in the early eighties on the John Dodd car: he was taken to court by RR for using their ‘flying lady’ on the bonnet, they argued that they never had a hand in building the car. He mated the engine to an american automatic gearbox, as his business was in the overhaul of such items. He was pursued by the police in croydon for exceeding the speed limit, was apprehended and went to court, the police statement said that when they blocked the road to stop him ‘Mr Dodd turned round and just disappeared’. It was also reported that he took the vehicle to Germany where he allegedly drove so fast down an autobahn that a ferrari driver going 160mph said he only had time to see the flying lady as the car whistled past him doing an estimated 200mph.

There was a bloke at Chailey this summer with a Merlin in a modified Silver Ghost chassis. It was started up on several occasions, sounding very nice and drawing large crowds of onlookers. The same vehicle was featured on a tv programme earlier in the year.

Little Walden Tower was restored in the Eighties by an architect by the name of Roger Lynn, it was used for his offices, the fence was erected at that time for security purposes. About 1990 I did some work for Roger and was invited in, the only artefacts he showed me were some pictures, I didn’t see any museum pieces, I think if he had some he would have mentioned it. A few years ago Roger moved on and the building was sold, now it is a private residence, I don’t know the new owners although I have seen them coming and going. The building and the site in general is in excellent order with the Maycrete fire/ambulance building still standing. I do anticipate meeting the new owners at some point and I also have permission from the farmer (before ploughing!!) to land on the field adjacent to the B1052, in front of the tower. If I can glean any more info I will share it.
As an aside, another friend of mine ran an engineering business in one of the buildings in the technical site east of the tower, on the wall was the mission board, to my knowledge it is still there. I hope this is of some help. DB

Hello Everyone….. Highlights for me were flying at different displays around the country, sometimes on my own and sometimes in formation with people who possess far more talent than myself. Thanks to those organisers that asked me to participate in their shows. The highlights were Chailey and Sywell, although the private show hosted by Marshalls at Cambridge is well worthy of mention. Closer to home, I must thank Duncan and the crew at Rougham who continue to put up with me.

Roll on next season…………. can’t wait
