As you can see some have been used more than once over the years, I don’t remember exactly where I copied this list from but it was at the time we were preparing to move out of Wroughton.
Will look at the 36 and 126 next
IIRC, that was Hamilton Standard – in the US.
Ken
Actually, Hamilton Standard did it first with the AEW3 now at Pima XL482 and then Dowty realised that they might be on to something and that they had better catch up so to speak and put XL500 back into the air, remember it flying at Culdrose and in formation with a Sea King AEW2 several times, XL500 now of course being restored to airworthy status by Kennet Aviation.
Kiss goodbye to another Shackleton if Mawgan closes….
Not in my expertise, and I don’t know what plans would be, but it wouldn’t be the easiest thing to move, without JCB intervention….
Just to put the record straight, at the moment, its the airfield that is for sale, that is the runway, tower and area around it, not the hangars and other buildings on the actual domestic site which are to be retained for the time being. The Shackleton at the moment is not under threat as it is as most people know near the front gate of the base itself on the south side of the runway.
The pilot ejected and was I believe OK
He certainly was, went on to become an Admiral
They sent Bristol instead which I believe is now in turn rotting away as a training ship in Portsmouth, a class of light cruisers designed specifically to escort the Invincible class carriers but decided to be too expensive after just one was built.
The Bristol class were intended to escort CVA-01 before it was cancelled, not the Invincible class
Were not parts of the Bulwark incorporated into the Carrier Experience at Yeovilton, particularly with regard to the bridge and internal fittings etc.
No, the items used came from a number of frigates, Arethusa, Juno, Penelope and Cleopatra
correct me if I am wrong but I thought the Huey Cobra at Middle Wallop was captured during the Falklands campaign
The Huey(UH-1H) is a Falklands trophy, the Cobra(AH-1) is not, 2 different airframes
Seaking93, could you please update us as and when there is a final result? Thanks.
The item that was for sale on ebay has recently been handed over to FAAM by the police and I believe that the matter is as far as FAAM is concerned closed

On another note, if the Scimitar(a naval aircraft that flew from decks) does not fit the collecting policy, how about the Etendard, Kfir and MB339 where do they fit in?
To say nothing about the other none naval US aircraft onboard the ship, or is there policy now to collect any US type that will bring in the punters, also where does Concorde fit in?
Whether they are “hard facts” or not I don’t know, but this is what Octobers Aircraft Illustrated has to say,
“Former Royal Navy Scimitar F.1 XD220 is perhaps the one aircraft that doesn’t fit into the museums collection. This is one of only three complete Scimitar survivors, and the restoration staff feel that it needs a good home somewhere indoors. The aircraft was gifted to the US Government by the Royal Navy, which means that the US Navy has custody of it. This apparently makes transfer of the airframe to another party somewhat difficult.”
I say transfer it back to the UK where it belongs. I’m afraid the logic of the thought process that saw this rare aeroplane swapped for a Phantom and shipped to New York defeats me to this day. What the hell were they thinking?
The aircraft was not gifted despite what the sign in front of the aircraft says, it was loaned in a two way deal which brought the F4 now at East Fortune to VL, this was arranged by the previous Director of FAAM for various reasons which I can’t now remember with the passage of time.
A few points
BA engineering look after the a/c, certain steps have been take to preserve the airframe.
Aircraft appearance team clean here pretty regularly
She was used to store out of hours engines in here bays before they were given to museum, hence the ballast in the front hold….its plastic sealed hi-life mags!
No Concordes have any significant fuel in them, Filton have 3T of ballast in forward hold. Cofg is only and issue with 4 engines fitted.
G-BOAB will move to T5, but airside, when it opens.
G-BOAB had the majority of her interior removed in 2002 for the Project rocket upgrade in 2002 (New toilets, galleys, wardrobes etc..), new fitting were in the process of being fitted when the work was halted pending Concorde’s retirement. Part of her pre-project rocket interior is now fitted inside G-BBDG at Brooklands.
BA’s retirement plan was to use G-BOAB as a marketing device at LHR and G-BBDG as a publicly accessible Concorde in the south east in a Museum environment. they had 8 Concordes on the books, but with only 7 interiors….and you could not expect any museum to restore G-BBDG without being able to fit an interior that allowed public visits and therefore a revenue stream.
The Concorde that need an eye kept on is G-BOAD in New York!
Saw G-BOAD on its barge last week, the plans for the new Pier 86 is to have the Concorde actually on the pier alongside the Intrepid when it returns from its ‘leave’ over in New Jersey in 18 months time, all this info from the display boards onboard the Intrepid
Did I read some where that the Intrepids example is available?
J man
If anyone has any hard facts about this could they please contact me, the aircraft does not belong to the Intrepid Museum and they have no right to dispose of it.
Opening times are 1000 to 1600 – entry is £4 for adults
The reason I ask is that if you wish to see them the last Cobham Hall Open Day for 2006 is on Thursday 26th October
