    waste of money

For the amount they would spend on r&d and production, they could build another 7 or so SSBN’s!

Strategic aviation is a real waste of money…

Mikoyan MiG-17…. I know, it’s on a monument pole (in the city of Gorkii), but you can still see its beauty.

I agree that newest Super Eagles have many avionics components more advanced than Su-34 has, but the PLATFORM, ergo the aircraft itself is totally different, and IMO superior to Eagles.

Actually, the Platform means the entire aviation complex, including the avionics. What you are describing here is the aircraft component of the platform..

what i don’t understand is, they’re left outside with our everchanging elements. our weather can change unexpectedy (hey, Iqaluit is WAY UP NORTH) and tends to be unpredictable. the least was that the Gripens could have used the old FOL Hangers that were originally built for CF-188’s during the Cold War Years!!!

Swedish climate ranges from relatively mild winters in the south to extreme cold in the north (Kiruna, Lapland).
Swedish fighters have always been designed for outside storage and operation when necessary. So Alaska feels like home to them.

I think the FB-22 is exactly what’s needed. This should have been done a long time ago, and the efficiency of the Raptor programme could have been much better.

Also, am I the only one to think that this would be a great F-111 replacement for the Australian AF?

Interesting new info about Project 955 !

Navy chief Masorin in a late July statement said that the Yuri Dolgorukiy will hit the waves later this year, and enter service in 2007.
The Alexander Nevskiy and Vladimir Monomakh will enter service in 2009 and 2010.

    Source (in Russian): http://lenta.ru/news/2006/07/26/submarine/

But what’s interesting is that the same report seems to indicate a higher silo count for the subsequent 955 boats. (I have argued in this tread that 12 SLBMs is way too small of a battery).

The report claims that the Yuri Dolgorukiy, which was launched a decade ago, does indeed have 12 silos, but the subsequent 955s will have longer hulls and will accomodate 16 SLBMs!

The original post talks of the sale of a downgraded export version. Has the full-up Russian variant ever been offered to anyone? If so, when?

Never was. The Mig-31(Foxhound) has so far been considered a strategic defense asset. Its main mission was cruise missile and bomber interception.

(compare this to the Mig-25(Foxbat), which primary mission was to intercept the SR-71, and to be a recon platform. Later it also was tasked with SEAD missions (Mig-25BM), for which an AG capability was added)

Actually I think they should use nukes. Next time a Katyusha lands in Haifa, Beirut becomes a smoking radiating ruin. Then we will see how brave Hezbollah are. :p

Of course, let the Lebanese subhumans die. Rrright…

US Agent (Dr Watson), you’ve missed the point, but that’s OK.

Depressing…. Part of the problem is that the Navy is still sinking money into surface ships (pun intended).

Russia needs to focus the limited funds on subs, and demand execution of orders on time. It’s all about financial and production focus.

So much for my Raptor hopes 🙁

“We’re prepared to make the largest investment we’ve ever made in air combat capability in terms of some A$16 billion [$11.7 billion] of investment, but Australia is not in a position to be able to buy F-22A Raptors, even if they were to be sold by the USA, and then buy strike capability as well” – said Nelson.

A good pick for the RAAF would be a combination of the F-22 for air defense missions and the Su-34 for strike/ASW missions.

I wish people would stop pointing fingers at China based on Tom Clancy novels and Cold War politics. U guys do realise that just because a nation is a dictatorship doesn’t really mean its a bad guy?

You’re off the mark. China is dangerous not because it’s a dictatorship (in fact, it’s not a dictatorship!) It’s dangerous because of its huge population and enormous economic power, so they didn’t have the need and means to be aggressive.

Someone in this thread has suggested to look into China’s history as a guide, claiming that they’ve not been aggressive before. But this is a false guide. China has never before been an economic and military superower.

It is now, and it’s desperately in need for more territories and more natural resources to feed its huge economy and 1.3+ billion in population.

And that’s the irony. Russia is doing everything they can to build China a better military and that’s going to come back to bite them in the a$$ in a big, BIG way. Sure Russia has nukes but so does China and Russia knows if it nukes China it’ll be nuked itself so you’ll eventually see China taking bites out of the Russian far east and Russia impotent to do anything about it. Hey maybe they could complain to the U.N. LOL!! :diablo:

Indeed; you are spot on. This is a strategic mistake of global proportions…

Are you implying that China is going to take over all of Southeast Asia?

Are you implying that China is NOT going to take over all of Southeast Asia?

..and make attempts on Russian Far East?
