One more thing, if Pakistan decides to go for AEW platforms, the costs of intergration will really skyrocket, while one can hope that the growing economy can take care of things, I would advise memebrs that Pakistan is still on the IMF debt list and is heavily constrained in his spending due to past agreements, things may be looking better but IMF imposed budget constraints do exist. the PAF is trying to suddenly become a 4th gen airforce, the problem is that they are buying everything all at once, and where does this leave the air defense network which is probably more important to upgrade than the PAF itself. IF it took 20 years to finally come up with money plus aide for F-16s, then it cannot be assumed that they will again come up with more money for air defence network upgrades. I feel that this is where the PAF should concentrate vs the IAF.
The PAF should have stuck with FC-1s and produced more of them plus tried to either fit French avionics and radar ala Mirage 2000-5 or go for F-16 C type avionics and radar and missile systems. We are seeing a one engined airforce which is fine for air defense but why need the F-16 if the FC-1 has been made out to be similar in capability, they should simply rank up the numbers, these moves suggest more in terms of corruption rather than making sense, it seems that South Asia is not that different afterall.

Do u have the precise information about J-10 and FC-1 radomes, i.e. diameters? China’s offer of a smaller version of J-10’s radar indicates that either China is not willing to release KLJ-10 technology at this moment and/or its too expensive or it does not fit into FC-1’s nose. Richard Fisher in his report on Ideas 2004 quotes a PAF official saying that PAF did not reduce its requirement.
As for maintenance costs etc., the point to note is that PAF’s future planning centralises around F-16, FC-1 and possibly another fighter type. Right now PAF operates different types of mirages, F-7Ps (2 different types of engines), F-7PG, A-5s etc. Whereas the induction of new types would cost them more in certain aspects, PAF would save money in other fields, and overall costs are unlikely to be as astronomical as u think. OTOH, PAF budget would undoubtedly go up with time just like any other force, and its Pakistan’s economic growth which would determine the real size of budget.

    Vikas
I remember that there was a discussion about this a year back on the chinese forum, we should try to get the diameter of both J-10 and FC-1 noses but I would doubt that the nose issue would be the problem, the FC-1 nose should at least be able to accomodate a 600mm radar, the answer is probably the suspicion that the Chinese are not yet willing to release their J-10 radar, I can’t see why if Pakistan and China are so close, unless the Chinese feel that the US is a bit too close for comfort in Pakistan but then you wonder how different a dummed down J-10 radar will be compared to the real thing, less power, less channels, less ECM capabilities but the basic tech will still be given away, I find all this quite curious and interesting.
As far as the cost of the radar, i wonder if it will be that much more expensive compared to the Grifro series due to a strong Euro and high European prices. I was even wondering if they would even go for F-16 C/D avionics and radar and homogenize the avionics package, it would save on costs.

I certainly do not think that any Govt would actually make long term defence plans based on US aide, US aide may increase or decrease or dissapear, these planes will last for at least the next 25 years, hence all Govts including that of Pakistan must have a reasonable domestic alternative to foreign aide when it comes to defence maintainance. Plus you say that new gen radars cost cheap, true but the PAF does not really have any BVR radar right now minus the F-16A radar which as of now is not calibrated to fre BVRs, hence the costs will still go up, ie simply because the PAF never had a decent radar in the first place. Also maintaining FC-1s and F-16s will cost a bit more than maintaining F-16As and F-7s regardless, training etc will baloon, if its aide money that you think will pay for it all, sure, I wont argue, 3B in yearly aide may do the trick but relying on US aide is not a probable strategy here, I hope that I am not the only one who finds the danger in doing so.

I know thats the info I found here but the thing that confuses me is that the FC-1 nose is probably not that much smaller than the J-10 nose, hence why use a scaled down version? Cost? It makes more sense to shove the best possible radar available for the future backbone of the PAF especially considering the MKI radar and eventual 126 ac superbuy. Regardless, noone denies the fact that the PAF will be more capable a foe soon compared to now.
But the Pakistani defence budget stands at around 4B US, no way they can maintain so many FC-1s and around 40 F-16s, avionics, radar, BVR training, these costs will shoot up. Either there is a future plan to have one of the biggest increases in Pak history or someone will have to suffer cuts.

The cockpit layout looks very nice but this will cost especially from Sagem, they do not come cheap.

My question was though, is it the same J-10 radar or a scaled down J-10 radar? At least the sd-10 intergration will be done with ease with the j-10 radar, hence in about 3 years, the PAF will have BVR capability together with the F-16 and I would wager, it would take them a couple of years to finetune training etc. One thing becomes starkingly obvious though, the PAF will need to almost double its budget which begs the question, will the Army see some cuts or the navy.

legolas makes an excellent point. Is’nt $9 billion, nine times the cost of the entire LCA programme uptil the prototype testing phase? $ 500 million was spent on R&D.

I certainly hope that by the time the babus decide to purchase a new fighter, the LCA is ready to go, circa 2007, thus it will not make sense to buy them at all when the LCA is more than enough to fulfil all of our requirements, this way the Babus can be happy that they save money, keep the money in India, and create vast employment. But they may not be able to get their new S classes though.

This whole Mig issue is confusing, the ADS is designed to carry more than 12 Migs and also since they are upgrading the Harriers, will there be a mix of Harriers and MiG-29Ks on Gorshkov?

Well I remember reading a few months ago on this very forum that the Grifro S7 was not ready yet and perhaps a Chinese radar would be used, a scaled down version of the Chinese radar of the J-10 perhaps…. Have they managed to tackle the S7 issue now or is it a confirmed Chinese radar?

Indian bureaucracy has always been slow, the price hike of the Scorpene is proof of that, babus will be babus but then again we must understand that unlike some countries India does not tend to take aide money to buy these weapons, we pay cash, when you pay cash, you sometimes have to wait, there are other priorities. If some countries take 20 years to get a new weapon playform with aide, 5 years is not that bad. 🙂

Still waiting that you admit you were lying about your congress sources and other BS related to it. This is not Bharat Ratkshack where you can fantasize of you having links in US congress or G. W Bush living next door and ordering choppers.

Be a man, admit your mistakes.

No attack on Iran from Pakistani territory. Old, outdated Centrifuges sent to UN (not US) on Iran’s request.

Waiting…….I have all quotes by you regarding this issue form February to March. 🙂

Hmm wasn’t Golden Arrow the first non Pakistani guy to say that pakistan was getting F-16s with his Congress sources….. 🙂

It is retarded tot think that the USAF will share intel with the PAF about the IAF, I think that this is more a function of some wild pakdef induced dreams more than anything, in any event, some people seem to think that the IAF is really that stupid so as to give everything away to the USAF and the same works both ways I am sure.

In any event I have two basic questions

    1) When is PV2 expected to fly, last I heard in Feb, it was undergoing system intergration and awaiting flight clearence.
    2) The IAF has a shortage of pilots, hence I was wondering that in the future as more Su-30s come online and as each Sukhoi takes on two fully qualified pilots, will the IAF not have to pull some of its best pilots out of other squadrons to make up the numbers?
