Are the Bangalore Class and Talwar Class ships slated to defend the Mothership?

Jonesy, the 16 29Ks are an initial order, the number I have heard of is around 22-24 Ks on Gorshkov. There is also an option in the contract for 40 more Ks which will obviously see life on the ADS as well.

But overall I agree with you, without an AEW the Gorshkov will have a relatively limited ability combined with low sortie rates.

I wonder if anyone has the number of maintainance hours for the MiG-29K or similar aircraft for every hour flown.

I know that the refitted Admiral Gorshkov will still be an inefficient design (beyond the fact that it will be STOBAR), Sameer. I was simply pointing out that if you want to know if a Hawkeye can land on the ship you have to look at the angled deck lenght and not the total deck lenght.

No worries dude, but I wonder, the Charles de Gaule has about the same deck length but with CATBAR while the Gorshkov has it with stobar, that could also be a big difference.

The thing that confuses me the most is why are they fitting helis with refuelling capabilities?

It should be easier to clear for Indian sale-they already use the primary US component, the F404 engine. What makes you think BAe and Saab would only market it to India if the Pakistanis are allowed to have them?

Yes, 261.5m is the overall lenght of Charles de Gaulle. The angled deck is 194.5m. The latter is very close to the number you gave for the angled deck on Admiral Gorshkov.

This has never been the problem with the Gorshkov, the deck length etc will be taken care of and will be comparable to the Charles de Gaule, the problem will be the layout of the ship, also Austin while the 1000t=1ac thing is true, one must remember that the Gorshkov was not designed as an aircraft carrier and there may be major structural impairments for such an equation to hold true, I would look closely at 0.5-0.75acs per 1000 tonne.

The Vikrant did see power projection in the bombing of a certain harbour in the 1971 war. Also the ADS will join Gorshkov in any power projection adventure.

From the diagram it is possible for 2 aircraft to take off one after the other, drawback is that there will be no simultaneous landings and there will be alag after those two acs take off just in case of emergency, the other acs will have to wait.

I wonder if there is anything available online as to the probable sortie rates of the Gorshkov comming from the IN who have surely studied it and the Russians who have made presentations on the matter. I just dont like speculations.

Its not that simple, you see prices tend to change and packages become more expensive as you decrease the order amount, think economy of scale.

I’m guessing an E2C will need a more powerful engine in order to take off from a skyjump, the IN should be looking at a network of UAVs to provide AEW info.

Is 16 MiGs the initial order for the Gorshkov or is that the max that it will carry or do they plan to base a few harriers on it as well?

I would have been okay with the Gorgy back in 94 but one must understand that until 2001-2002 period the Indian Govt simply did not have the money and once they got the money they knew two things

!) We need a carrier asap to replace the Viraat (around 2007-2008)
    2) the ADS wont come fast enough.

The IN also pushed for stobar aircraft, hence came the Gorshkov.

Absolute nonsense! You dont need to have a phd in Indian politics to contribute to a debate about it.Reading articles, the internet and plain logic can suffice. A reasonably intelligent person can work it out. Your attitude is patronising , the sort of “only I understand my country” attitude. You yourself make no hesitation in debating about US,UK and Pakistani issues. Try not to take offense, just MY opinion…

First this was not addressed to you, so your opinion can be kept to yourself!
Secondly people who think that the Indian Govt pushed Gorshkov do not know Indian politics or reality as it is, it was always the IN who pushed the Gorshkov not the other way around

    Jonesy

It is my opinion that the Gorshkov will not be as effective as a brand new carrier, eg ADS, I was not one who supported the Gorshkov, I supported the building of a brand new carrier, I was only commenting on the fact that certain lads around here seem to think that the Indian Govt pushed Gorshkov and/or that the Gorshkov was in bad shape when official reports cleared it as being fit to serve. I was talking about the health of the ship rather than its effectiveness, the IN, not me, has said however that they needed a carrier asap and that the Gorshkov was the best option given the circumstances, I was also responding to comments like Gorshkov rusting but INdians signed anyway, the ship is sinking, these things are better letf to wetdreamers inn certain forums not here and certainly not when NOone has any direct evidence to contradict official reports. To me the ship is fine healthwise and can serve as the IN cleared it but I think that the deal took so long to hammer out that we could have had a carrier by now but such is the nature of slow INdian bureaucracy and general lack of strategic vision.

And your arguments about political deals is just wrong Steve and Sev, its just not the way it works in INdia and I do not expect you guys to understand, simply because you do not live there, ther was never any political will to buy an aircraft carrier and then push the deal, it was always the IN pushing the deal, had politicians pushed the deal, the opposition would have jumped and the Govt would have been changed on the spot, Indian politicians are really smart when it comes to politisizing aquisitions, not that smart when it comes to pushing things under the carpet or even I would argue, having strategic vision, I am sorry but that is the reality in INdia, do not compare a different country to the countries you know about, you cannot have a rationale debate based on “your opinion” of INdian politics, unless you have studied it for years, you really do not know, you get more brownie points for attacking the Gorshkov as a carrier rather than a ship with a bad hull (disproved by countless official IN checkups) and so called political interference.

Steve I agree with you when it comes to the Gorshkov’s limitations as a carrier, however the IN needed a carrier ASAP and the Gorshkov was the best choice out there and deemed better than the INvinsible. Until one person can show me proof that the Gorshkov will not be fit hull wise and show me reports with first hand accounts of the ship being unrefitable, then I am sorry but I will ignore that as BS.
