    A few thoughts here

This outnumbered BS that I hear, let us clear that up because I notice that certain journalists love mentioning it, that and the 101 MiG-21 crashes etc. First off there were a maz of bout 4-6 escorts who engaged the F-15s at any given time, the rest were strike aircraft who were not engaging at all, the ROLES WERE ALSO REVERSED FOR GOD’S SAKES but oops the journalists forgot about that minute detail. The IAF flew under many a restriction, there was noone who would have shown the Americans the true potential of any of the fighters, even the Bisons. American pilots get a lot of simulator time which should make up for the lower flying hours but granted I think that the USAF simply came to India and expecting dumb GCI controlled robots, that is what happens when you fight against the Iraqui AF and the great Afgan AF, your expectations go wayy down when it comes to your enemy’s capabilities.

i read from janes that the Grifo S7 will have 25 air to air and air to surface modes with a range of about 100kms for fighter sized targets and simultaneous engagement of 2+ fighters.

The Su-33 is too big, probably for the elevators but also the most important reason was that the SU-33 would be too few in numbers, hence the MiG-29K.

Well it depends, if you are planning to attack a NATO country then French is not the way to go, if you plan to fight someone else, then French is quite an attractive option. For example the mirage 2000 was the only non American western aircraft that anyone could buy with western tech of course, add to that, Dassault after sales technical support and spare parts replenishment is second to none.

Would anyone know the max payload that the MiG-29K will be able to carry if it plans to take off from the sky jump?

Also does anyone want to make an educated guess as to how many MiGs the Gorshkov could put in the air in say 5 mins?

the reasons listed by yourself are already valid, but i’ll give you a couple more, if you buy from them, besides being as good as expensive, you beter stockpile everything from A to Z, with in terms will cost you more 😮 like hell it will.
remember the falklands? the argentinian air force couldnt get spare parts, not even for their ejector seats, i’ve heard rumours that argentinian pilots took off the same and some died because the inhability to eject (maybe cazador can correct this  ). lets not forget the super etendards also
another, the cenepa war, the same story, FAP’s M2k no weapons or too few, want some??? soggy boy, the answeg is NO. cause you’rg at wagh (bloody right i’m at war and just when i need them… 😡 )
so to me better is to buy from suppliers that dont give a damn about embargoes and so.
    Camaro

Super etenards and Mirages were tasked to attack the Brit Navy and by the time it got close, there was not enough fuel to stay around for a long time and fight, some Argentine pilots talk about the fact that their collegues knew that in certain missions, they would not have enough fuel to come back, plus the French stopped spare parts flows to Argentina because of the UK, they are allies after all, the French also aparently gave a lot of info on the Iraqi air defence system in Gulf War 1 so that the Allies could more easily scramble the network.

The Rafale is in the 70M plus, probably twice the cost of the K, there was really no other affordable choice, add to that, the Russians really pressed on the IN to get the K if they wanted a friendly Gorshkov refit price and Akulas, hence…, well the K will have commonality with SMTs and I think that the IAF has placed an option for 40 more (not sure about the exact number) MiG-29Ks.
Scooter, I have been asking myself the same question, I wonder how many fighters the Charles De Gaule can carry but then again the Gorshkov was never designed to be a carrier, certain things just cannot be moved to make space and 24 MiG-29s is about a squadron worth of aircraft so its not really that bad.

I remember reading about powder catapults being fitted on the Gorshkov? Anyone know if the skyjump is final?

Corruption happens everywhere in the 3rd world, I always thought that Algeria would do better with ka-50s and Su-25s to tackle FIS but since I hear that they are on the loser end lately, MiGs do not look bad after all, a great victory for Mikoyan Design Bureau though, they finally have orders, doesn’t that make Algeria the most advanced operator of Russian hardware in the Muslim world. In fact if you minus the oil rich western buying countries like the UAE and Saudi, Algeria seems to have quite a BVR capable airforce with this purchase.

Is it just me or does there seem to be a LOT of Indian defence and Indian AF threads now…

I have been going through the pages and catching up on what I have missed and they seem to be everywhere.

If you try to catch up even more, you will realize that except for this one, most of the other threads were not even started by Indians!!!
    eg the Bhramos thread
    how good are US pilots
    Su-30 bested….

    cheers

Overall Portugal played a better game, England took out Gerard and it was over, they tried to pull off an Italy, too bad, watch the game again, its the team that had the possession and played the better game that went through. Wait for the World Cup.
