    When you have a billion+ people willing to work for a pitance you can get a lot done.

    Wages are rising at the rate of 60 to 70% each year (take note, India!). Provinces like Guangzhou are having difficulty filling factories now with skilled labor. The PLA itself is having trouble keeping people when they practically use up their 14% budget increases on salary increases alone.

    If you have a country with over a trillion in dollar reserves, bigger even than the Japanese, you sure can get some work done nonetheless. The amount of interest the US pays China alone for TDs can buy over 50 to Su-30 Flankers every year.

    JH-7 is quite similar to the Orao in terms of appearance.

    SOC i disagree with you strongly on the JF-17/FC-1 matter. It is one platform that will end up better than anything China has right now (J-10 and J-11 aside). Excellent replacement for J-7’s, F-8’s.

    The JH-7 is a lot larger, and was concieved at the time no one knew of the Oreo.

    Target of the JH-7 was the Su-24 without the expense and complexity of the VG wing.

    PLA appears to have copied Kh-31P as the YJ-91. How much they have is a mystery. How many planes can use them, is a mystery. There are suspects but the picture can easily expand.

    As “ChairmanMAOhametI” (from CDF) found the FC-1 and J-10 are from the same picture !!!

    … seem to be from the CAC airfield and the J-10 are ready to deliver !
    Would be nice to see how recent this picture is … and esp. to see the serial numbers on the J-10 !!

    This clearly dates the pictures after 2/16/2006 which is what was on the picture that caught one of the J-10s. The fourth FC-1 protoype on the field would have made the J-10s at least past April to recent, maybe this month.

    It said we don’t see the unit numbers because they are vital clues if yet another J-10 regiment is forming.

    PLA uses laser imitators in “tank war”

    A laser imitation system for tank battles developed in China has been used in a training exercise in the deserts of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, North China.

    Experts from the PLA Beijing Military Area Command training base designed the sophisticated imitation system, according to military sources.

    An exercise to check the maneuverability of the Chinese Army under real-war circumstances is now under way, with the “Red Army” brigade, from the Shenyang area command in the northeast, trying hard to break the defenses of the “Blue Army” of the PLA Beijing Military Area Command.

    The exercise began on September 5 when the “Red Army” left their home barracks in northeast China, heading for the training base in North China. Since then, the “Red Army” has been attacked by warplanes and electronic and electromagnetic weapons from the “enemy” — the “Blue Army”.

    After trekking 1,500 kilometers, the “Red Army” arrived at the real “battle ground” — the training base, where the “Blue Army” lay in wait for the “enemy” troops with the newly-developed imitation system.

    Since the “Red Army” knew little about the new training equipment, the “Blue Army” introduced the new technology with a laser imitation “tank battle” performance. Later, the two sides will fight a “tank war” using the imitation system.

    A group of Xinhua reporters have been authorized to provide exclusive on-site coverage of the exercises.

    Yep, that is right – that is the 4th protocol to the the 1980 UN CCW conventions. But again, as the US as not ratified this additional protocol that deals specifically with blinding lasers, you could even argue that the US could use lasers to such an effect.

    However, again from a legal point of view (law of war/IHL), the use of (and limit thereof) a laser would be guided by the two more general principles of 1) discrimination (being able to distinguish combatants and non-combatants) and 2) not inflicting superfluous and unnecessary injuries.

    On both counts, a laser seems to fit the bill.

    And obviously China didn’t either. They have been exhibiting laser blinder weapons and they got operational ones right on top of their ZTZ-98 and -99 tanks. If you use a laser target ranger on one of those tanks, sensors would automatically guide the blinders and zap—

    James Soong of the Kuomintang referred to it as 100km in one of his speeches. Basically I see around 110km to 170km. The point is not the air base locations but where you can put SAM sites. This is a distance that is easily covered by 150 to 200km SAM which the TK-2 and S-300PMU1 both claims. Even if you account for the need to reserve energy for less target escape, that would still mean 75 to 110km which is enough to cover the middle of the straits. Air superiority in my opinion, should guarantee a blanket of dominance for around a radius of at least 300km to make the term meaningful.

    Which brings me to my last point: What the USN lacks sure is adequate air supremacy capability to operate CVN near an enemy coast with substantial aerial warfare capabilities. I’m affraid those F/A-18E are no match for Su-27 derivates and J-10, even with that nice new ASEA radar. F/A-18E reduces the USN fighter fleet to a passive element, which is worse than just bad. F-35 will not change this cause it will not be a fighter. And networking and advanced AAM will not change things in that respect. That whole multi-role/multi-mission/swing-role blabbering is nice for peace time operations and colonial warfare like in Iraq where even an AD could do the job (perhaps better), in a real war you need a proper fighter – look at parallel developments before WW2, when a lot of influential people thought fighters were a thing of the past.

    For crying out loud, your F-35 sales pitch is too obvious. I doubt any Navy pilot would agree to your assesement of the Super Bug’s combat capabilities.

    I quite agree, but at least the F-23 looks more original. The F-22 is just plain ugly, a robot. The day when all the fighters in the world look like faceted robots is the day my interest on aviation ends.

    SR-71 is one of those planes I fell in love in my youth.

    Taiwan would most likely be shooting itself in both foots if it tries to take it to the mainland in anything more then a handful of strategic skirmishes . Firstly even if they somehow manage to negate some risk of s-300’s they would still be loosing jets to SAM’s and attrittion alone will kill them ( think about needing 10-12 jets to go and destroy 2-3 targets and comming back with 7-8 jets ) , secondly if the f-16’s are tanogin in the mainland who the heck is gonna stop the hoards of chinese fighters comming in???

    The problem is, the Straits are too narrow that S-300 or HQ-9 (assuming they’re S-300 copies) located in the mainland coast have the range to cover not just all of the straits, but right to the middle of Taiwan. There is more than enough range there to cover an invasion fleet. Even the J-7s still have enough range to cover the invasion fleet. A ROCAF response to meet a PLAAF wave with an interception point in the middle of the Straits are going to get SAMs thrown at them. And vice versa to the PLAAF wave because the ROC has similar SAM capability too. The problem is, the PLAAF has devoted much more attention with the suppression of SAM compared to the ROCAF.

    Sooner or later, you still need to deal with those SAM sites, one way or another.

    This of course would be one of the few times that the politician could be usefull and put a stop to this kind Inter-Service Rivalry! Its totally counter productive and a waste of valuble resources…………

    It can be said that it was the politicians in the first place that forced generals and admirals into the nasty business of lobbying to get the most megabucks into their services. It is and always be, a fight for the piece of the pie, especially a pie as big as the defense budget of the United States.

    A turning point to the Navy came when Grumman for some reason got the ire of then Defense Secretary Cheney. When the super attack jet proposal, whatever was the abbreviation for the supposed A-6 replacement, got cancelled, Grumman was in serious trouble looking for ways to keep its aircraft business afloat. In my opinion, the Navy, in addition to all the technical points of the F-14D and the Super Tomcat, has serious political eggs in keeping Grumman alive, and would still have granted the contracts to Grumman even just to keep that company running.

    For some reason, the Navy knew that some politician, which I think is Cheney, isn’t going to grant Grumman any contracts no matter what, and the Navy still needed something to follow up on the aging Tomcats. The Navy already lost their A-6 replacement, so they seriously needed a plane that could take all these places, and the only thing left was to work on the Bug. So the Navy got its Super Hornet, the United States as a whole lost what I deem is a national treasure in the organization that was Grumman.

    Well, we aren’t going to get a F-22 type fighter for USN Carrier Airwings! The next best thing is clearly the F-35.

    USN vs. USAF sibling rivalry can be some of the most politically intense yet. “No way in hell” can be said to be the motto of the USN adopting a USAF fighter for its own, and vice versa for the USAF too. Let’s put it in another way—its a clear line in the sand.

    After working with all the Centuries series designs and the Navy F-4 so proving to be abject superior to all of them, it was the political humiliation for the Air Force to adopt the F-4. But not for long.

    The Air Force was coming out with the F-111, and the Navy saw that it will suck, and so the squids say “no way in hell”. So they ran another program and came out with the F-14. So aptly named too, “Tomcat” is the call sign for the general who was a staunch Navy aviation advocate.

    Seeing that the F-14 is kicking the F-111 in the buns, the USAF is facing the prospect that the F-14 might be forced into them just like the F-4. So they jumped on Boyd’s theory and came out with their own answer. The F-15 is as much as a response to the Navy Tomcat as it was to the Soviet MiG-25. But I would take it its more of the former.

    So when the F-16 won the LWF competition, the Navy said no way in hell they would fly that thing, and suddenly came out with the requirement they needed a two engined plane for “safety reasons over the sea”. This despite all the single engined A-7s and A-4s that have flown all the carrier decks for years, and it didn’t seem to matter for the Marines when they got the Harrier later.

    So they took the losing candidate of the LWF and turned the F-17 into the F-18. And goes on to this day.

    To get the Navy and the Air Force to work on the “Joint” F-35 is a monumental political achievement. Without that “Joint” wording, neither service would have bought it, and both services were probably dragged screaming and kicking into this by the politicians. It was clear the USN ain’t going to accept the Raptor no matter what, and they’re looking for their own fifth generation plane. It can be said that the Raptor’s designed superiority is intentional to such an extent that it was also meant to preempt the Navy effort.

    This is still a clear line, and nothing is more representative of the USN’s aviation autonomy than to fly its own fighter type. That still, there is still some that may resist to the idea of the F-35, and so the Super Hornet is going to be taken as the idolic symbol of Navy’s aviation independence. and with that, the Navy is going hang on to that plane as long as it can.

    Taken from a Japanese website and posted on the CDF by hallo64. To make it short, Bad tracking ranges of the radar, inability to support AMRAAM and AAM-4, structural defects on the wings prevent testing of larger AAMs.

    1,レーダJ/APG-1の問題
    ・探知範囲が20nm程度しかなく設計の1/3程度
    ・探知したターゲットもいきなりレーダから消える事がある
    ・ターゲットにロックオンするものの急激な機動をするとロックが外れる
    下の2つの問題解決のため改修は行われたものの,能力は相当低下したとの事.
    大幅な改修が行われるのは予算がついたとしても5年後以降になる可能性が高い.
     現在のところ,原因としてはピトー管とレーダの干渉,プログラムのバグ,根本的な設計ミスなどが挙げられているが,詳細は不明.原因の可能性として僚機のレーダと干渉が原因との見方もある.
     レーダの問題の為,三沢のF-2は2002年4月からアラート(警戒)待機を行うはずであったが,現場の反対により中止になり,アラート待機開始は2003年の秋になる模様.
     レーダの性能不足により,アラート待機は日の出から日没までに限定する事を検討しているとの事.

    2,搭載可能な中距離空対空ミサイルの問題
     短距離の空対空ミサイルに関してはAIM-9およびAAM-3の搭載が可能で問題はないが,中距離空対空ミサイルはAIM-7F(AIM-7Mを搭載してもAIM-7F相当でしか使用できない)のみである.
      アクティブホーミングミサイルであるAAM-4やAMRAAM等の搭載は不可能であり,20年以上前のAIM-7F相当しか使用できない.
     平成15年度からAAM-4およびAAM-5の搭載を可能にするための研究が始まる予定.

    3,機体強度の問題
     開発中に発覚した主翼の強度不足の問題は,設計変更により量産機では解決されているとのこと.
     金属による補強を行ったのは試作機のみであり,量産機で使われている新設計の主翼には金属補強はされていないとの事.
     また試作機も量産機仕様と同じ主翼に換装されている.
     その他にも細かいところで様々な強度不足の問題が出た(とはいっても細かいトラブルは機体開発にはつきものですが…)
     水平尾翼・垂直尾翼の強度不足,バフェットなどにより特定の形態で低高度を飛行する際に機体を破壊する可能性のある負荷がかかることが判明.機体制御プログラムの書き換えにより,その特定の形態で,特定の高度を飛行する際機体を破壊する負荷がかからないよう改善した.

    4,対艦ミサイル搭載数の問題
     ASM-1/2を4発搭載可能なはずであるが,試験飛行が専門の岐阜では4発積んだ姿が目撃されているが,実戦部隊のある三沢では,ASM-1/2を4発積んだ目撃例が皆無.練習はすべて2発積んだ状態で行なわれている.4発搭載には何らかの問題があるのか?
     また,次世代の対艦ミサイルASM-3に関してはミサイル重量と主翼強度の関係で4発積む事が不可能である可能性が指摘されているが,ASM-3の開発は現在中止されている.

     レーダーは三菱電機が開発したJ/APG-1 アクティブ・フェイズドアレイ・レーダーが装備される。複数目標の同時処理や、ルックダウン/シュートダウン能力を有し、推定される能力は、同時処理できる目標は10個以上、艦船などの大型目標の探知距離が100nm(約185km)、戦闘機などの小型目標の探知距離はルックダウンで35nm(約65km)程度である。レーダーの作動モードには、空対空射撃、ドッグファイト、ミサイル・オーバーライド、空対地射撃、航法の5モードがある。空対空射撃モードには中射程ミサイル、短射程ミサイル、機関砲、目視のサブモードがあり、ミサイル・オーバーライドモードには中射程ミサイルと短射程ミサイルの2つのサブモードが設けられる。空対地射撃モードでは、投下点連続計算(CCRP)、弾着点連続計算(CCIP)、ダイブ・トス爆撃、マニュアル、空対艦ミサイル事前計画、空対艦ミサイル目視等のサブモードが設けられている。もちろんレーダーには全般を通じて高い対電子妨害性を有する。

    So Track range for fighter sized target is only 35nm or 65km. Pathetic stats for an new AESA…

    However i love the front part in the F-4E, specially those large intakes and long radome that is couple with a large tandem cockpit, the integration looks better to me than the MiG-23UB twin seater cockpit fuselage in terms of pure aesthetics

    Psychologically it can be said that a long large radome set between two large intakes is “naturally” pleasing to the eye because it is a penile suggestion.
