    I think the news was posted before. They are exercising with some B-52s and Cannon AFB F-16s, two squadrons at least.

    I’m surprised with all of the modernizations to the main wing they didn’t opt to change the inlets to a series closer to the wing roots, something akin to the F-105. The nose of the aircraft was already cramped, and to change to side body-mounted inlets would of alleviated some of the space problems.

    That’s what they already did for the JL-9 aka FTC-2000 trainer. Other proposals included F-7MF (intake underneath) and the J-7FS (Crusader like nose).

    I think the J-7 series is already on its last legs and the development budget is at a shoestring to make any more big changes (like adding a larger radar that can use the PL-12).

    In an earlier post it was mentioned that the Chinese received actual Mig-21MF from Egypt. Does anyone have pictures of these planes that shows the paint scheme China used on them. I can find all kinds of J-7Cs but not the original Russian Mig-21MF in Chinese colors.

    I don’t know what happened to these planes, though the MiG-23s the Chinese got from the Egyptians are now currently in display in the Minsk theme park in Shenzhen acting as props.

    True. Also making somethings more complicated is that some regiments or divisions also break rules once in a while.

    Currently the PLAAF revised its numbering system as of mid 2005 so these no longer apply. In a way, its also good, since it makes it easier to vintage-time the picture if its recent or old.

    When it is your believe, why not, keep your nationalistic “glasses”!
    Japan is building its fighters with US-licences. Just part of the avionic is indigenous.
    In doing so the Japanese fighters are double in price. Still a good deal in Japanese eyes, because they can keep track with aircraft development without to pay the price to own developments.
    Just for the day, when Japan has to stay alone for some unknown reason.
    China is doing something similar, but too proud to acknowledge that.

    The F-2 is still sourcing key components from Lockheed Martin by declaration, the J-11B isn’t. This is not a matter of “opinion”. This is a matter of if they are actually doing it or not.

    And simply, the Chinese are not.

    A well kept AL-31F will last the life-time of a Flanker.

    Not true. The effective MTBO of an AL-31F is around 750 hours, if it does not run into trouble earlier. The MTBO of a Flanker airframe is 2000 flight hours, this being the Su-27SK and Su-30MKK. The Su-30MKI or at least the later batches, along with the Su-30MKM is around 6000 flight hours. Dunno about the MK2s. The service life of the PLAAF Su-27SKs and the IAF Su-30Ks seem to indicate no problem at all reaching that 2000 hours.

    That is nonsense and you know that. To beef-up the structure of a fighter and replace certain parts will not make something new really.
    China tried to learn to built a fighter like the Flanker in a similar way like India or some other examples. There is nothing wrong about that and it is a smart way.
    Israel bought the refined Mirage 5 (Mirage IIIE) and transformed it in the Kfirs.
    Israel beefed-up their F-15s to F-15E level (Baaz) and none claimed, that this does made it an indigenous fighter in total. The result and performance gains may justify that claim to some to degree, but in the end it is still the basic F-15. The F-4-2000 is another example. If the J-11B comes close to the canceled Su-27MF from the early 90s is open for discussion.
    The H-7, J-8, J-10 and FC-1 are much more indeginous by that.
    Something like the “Rafale” will be a future indeginous Chinese fighter. All parts designed and built in China.

    There is only a minority of commonality between the F-16 and the Japanese F-2. There is only a minority of commonality between the Hornet and the Super Hornet. By minority, that is less than 50% commonality. In actuality, these examples are only 20 to 30%.

    In the Chinese J-8I and J-8II, the commonality is only 30%.

    The changes between the F-16A and the F-16C is truly serious enough to create a humongous weight gap between the two.

    If I take a plane with a 4000 flight hour life and extend it to 6000 flight hours. You probably can do that with modifications on the same airframe design. If I take an airframe with 2000 flight hour life and move that to 6000 flight hours, there is going to be a lot more serious improvements underneath. Up to 8000 hours, really even more serious changes. There should be a threshold or a boundary where you simply cannot take the original airframe past this line and still call it mostly original.

    From 2000 flight hours to 10,000 flight hours? That is a lot of changes (5X) and I mean calling it changes would be a euphemism.

    You need to find an example where there is a comparable caliber or value in changes.

    These change are multiplied by various factors:

    New Engine—the WS-10A appears to be slightly heavier and a wider diameter.

    Differing materials used—composite substitution, different metallurgical sciences and alloys resulting in a net loss of weight of 700kg.

    All these factors add with the lifetime requirements will result in fundamental cascading changes throughout the plane’s structure.

    True you will still call this plane rightfully an Su-27 by its mere appearance. Underneath its something very different.

    [oh and please remember, the US allowed the Japanese to make the F-2 a superior F-16. The Russians because of their paranoia to the Chinese would not have allowed the Chinese in spirit to make a better Su-27 than what they have, even their upgraded ones.]

    That is totally unaccurate, they say this 180 АЛ-31Ф для замены выработавших ресурс двигателей на истребителях типа Су-27 ВВС Китая, they say very clearly 180 AL-31Fs for the Chinesese air force Su-27s so at no moment they are mixing the engines.

    Where the **** it says it is being used in the J-11B.

    Maybe you didn’t see the CCTV video of the interview of the WS-10A designer. He showed the engine in front of reporter camera opened from an access hatch inside a J-11, then explained various details in camera as he pointed the various accessories. The designer was later awarded by the state in a ceremony for technical achievement.

    Frankly I would rather go with an official state media making an announcement/admittance rather than some vague guess by a poorly edited and error corrected news article being misinterpreted by a loon.

    According to Crobato
    you take 14045 where the 14 means division number after you minus 11. 14-11=3 so you get 3rd division.
    14045 means 4th Regiment
    1445 is the unit number

    Come to think of it I was suffering major jet lag brain fart.

    4th Regiment can only belong to the 2nd Division, not the 3rd, since the outline of the regiments go like this.

    1st Division (1xx2x)
    1st Regiment (11x2x)
    2nd Regiment (12x2x)
    3rd Regiment (13x3x)

    2nd Division (1xx3x)
    4th Regiment (14x3x)
    5th Regiment (15x3x)
    6th Regiment (16x3x)

    more or less you get the picture.

    Thus 14045 is an impossible number. It should be 14035 or 17045.

    They haven’t increased the number of pylons.

    Probably because the number of pylons is one of those things that define “Su-27”, otherwise it would be Su-30 or Su-33.

    Note the lack of an IFR also and the continued presence of the IRST in the center and not offset.

    And the rather strange retention of the legacy RWR housing near the intake.

    Do the Russian sources differ carefully between AL-31F and FN for the use in Flankers and J-10s?!
    Thank you to Crobato for the answer about Chinese numbers.

    Russian sources never fully declared the number of AL-31Fs delivered in China. The only documentable declaration was the last order of 180 AL-31Fs, but never declared in public what all the previous orders were, or how many were attached to the kits. The 180 engines seem to fit well as spare engines considering the size of China’s Flanker fleet.

    They don’t however mix AL-31F and AL-31FN numbers. The AL-31F orders were a combination of Salut and UMPO deliveries while the AL-31FN were completely Salut’s.

    Please disregard Flogger and his vague and outdated sources (never anything in 2007). I cannot care less what his “sources” declare—the absolute evidence is what is photographically and observably verifiable. Actual planes speak louder than words.

    If you take what is claimed to be declared in paper, vs. what is actually out there, the results do not match. Remember the seventh regiment is confirmed operational in May of 2005, not 2006. This dichotomy between declarations in paper vs. the observed evidence is one of the mysteries of this coproduction agreement which is not easy to concile (been thinking on this for years now). Between paper vs. evidence, evidence has superior weight.

    The bottom line, is that as of the middile of 2005, there are seven confirmed Su-27/J-11 regiments in operational status, not counting the Su-30 regiments which are seperate. We know what these units are, their regiment and division numbers, a good estimation of their unit size and basically their jurisdictions and locations.

    The real PLAAF 14045, which I presume is the 5th plane, 4th Regiment, 3rd Division, isn’t going to be a PF or even a J-7C/D, but likely to be just a J-7B, which is improved MiG-21F13 with wings modified for fuel tanks and additional hardpoint.

    It looks quite different from the Chinese version of the jet powered Styx, called the C-301 code name Kraken. The Kraken has its intake underneath, and does not claim supersonic speed.

    What strange answers. All sides did avoid carefully to present known data. Just the useless bashing of links not bolstering the own claims.
    How many Flankers are in Chinese service from 1991 till 2007?
    Including the 105 J-11 assembled from Russian kits?
    A Chinese rgmt has how many fighters?
    How many Chinese rgmts do operate Flankers till June 2007?!

    A PLAAF regiment has around in average 24 to 32 fighters. 24 basically operational, 4 for a training flight, 4 for reserve.

    How many PLAAF regiments operate?

    7 for Su-27SKs, UBKs and J-11s. These are all basically mixed together. At least four of these regiments have known serials that total 30-32.

    Simply by the orbat of Su-27s and J-11s, the numbers not only exceed 105 but can reach past 120 to 130. This does not count test and trial regiments attached with the CFTC, of which at least five planes have been spotted in an CFTC field (Google Earth). Given that some of the older Su-27s would have attrited by now, the number of J-11s would have been higher.

    4 PLAAF regiments operate Su-30MKK, each with 19 aircraft. PLAAF bomber regiments, of which these fall under, generally operate around 20.

    1 PLANAF regiment operates Su-30MK2 with 24 aircraft. The numbers indicate a reorgnization of PLANAF bomber regiments to exceed over 20.

    The experience of looking these regiments tell you that the PLAAF do not GAP their numbers.

    If a regiment receives 19 Su-30MKKs, they were numbered 01 to 19 respectively. They are not numbered 01 to 30 and with gaps in between. The PLANAF 4th Division got 24 Si-30MK2s, and subsequently the planes are numbered 01 to 24. This has been true of the formation of other Flanker regiments even to the first and second one. When the first Su-27 regiment was formed with the 3rd, the planes were numbered 01 to 26, no gapping. The next regiment was formed with the 2nd Division was numbered 27 to 48. This regiment later added J-11s, increasing the numbering to at least 55. Again no gaps and all true to the number of delivery. The last UBK regiment formed with the 33rd Division was 28 planes, and they were numbered 49 to 76. No gaps. The Chinese added J-11s numbered 77 to 80. Total = 32 planes.

    19th Division regiment = spotted with J-11 no. 30. This regiment inherited all the Su-27SKs and UBKs from the 3rd when the 3rd moved to Su-30MKKs. 7th and 1st Division = spotted with UBKs numbered 29 to 32. The UBKs are unlikely to be wearing their original numbers ince these numbers appeared in both regiments at once and so must have been repainted to match current regiment numbering. All these are based on observed, videoed and photographed data. If you are going with observed ORBAT *alone* with known and proven presumptions about PLAAF regimental structure, its going to well exceed 105 J-11s.

    Well, judging by the various pics, it’s like this:

    centerline pylon has been seen with 1.400 liter tank, which should be over 1.2 tons. Some claim they’ve seen pics with 6 250 kg cluster bombs on centerline pylon as well. So that’s over 1.5 tons. Like Crobato said, innermost pylon has been seen with 6 250 kg bombs, though the middle plyon i’ve seen with only 4 250 kg bombs, not 6. Outer pylon has been seen with 250 kg bomb, and wingtip one, like is said, can hold at least small AAMs. All in all, 7 tons seems like the very least it can carry, with 7.5 tons being likely as well. What would be interesting to know is internal fuel…

    The diagrams I;ve seen has inner and center pylons with the 6 bomb MER. I don’t know if the outerpylon can carry a 250kg bomb. Maybe it could since it can carry a tank there but it may not be wired or designated for it.

    Yes off-course! I know that. 😀 Main difference for me would be that J-11B flies with the WS-10A and NOT AL-XX compared to the GE engine in the F-2. So there is big difference there itself and probably allot more. But, his example of the F-2 was interesting. The closest example HE came up with. So thats why I said “possible” or possibility 😀 . Thats me trying to put a diplomatic face. :p 😀 😎

    The main difference is the intention of the program. One is a result of politicians caving in to US demands that Japan has to act against its trade imbalance; and the other is simply driven by the requirements of self sufficiency.

    The more apt metaphor is the F-15J. I believe China’s original intentions was closer to that. A partnership that would allow the license built Su-27SKs to modify the radar and to use Chinese weapons. Apparently the Russians use every excuse not to make that happen so they can sell their own munitions and missiles to China, which is a lucrative market.

    For the PLA, that wasn’t acceptable in the long run. They wanted something that could use their own missiles, like the YJ-8X series, the PL-8 and the PL-12. Since the Su-30MKK cannot do this either, so the Chinese took it to the next level, and started planning their own version of an Su-27 that would do this instead. Once they consider changes with the radar and avionics, it opens other opportunities to make other changes as well, so the spec list evolved.
