Personally, I don’t see China building two large Aircraft Carriers simultaneously. As a matter of fact I wouldn’t call it “highly unlikely” but “extremely unlikely”.
One needs to analyze the historical record and see if there is any pattern.
Historically, many of the Chinese projects are built as pairs, like the 052/052B/052C DDGs, 093 subs and the 054/054A frigates. Yet there are many built that are first built as singles, like the 039, 039A, 094, Han and Xia class subs, the 071 LPD and the 051B DDG. One project actually had four built simultaneously, the 022 FAC.
Dock on Changxin can only support one ship at a time. Not unless they built another in parallel in Dalian. But the reports are saying a contract for two is handed to Changxin. Dalian will be occupied doing fitting the Varyag. Sounds to me like one will be built in Changxin, followed by a second one close to it. Its possible to have sections of the second ship built along the first one simultaneously, but final assembly will be sequential. All through the wonders of scheduling. The future destroyers will have to be built in the dock next to the big dock in Changxin.
Economic motivations are also at work here. Need to keep jobs running when the shipyards have less contracts or contracts canceled as part of the economic climate.

There is a very obvious trend as I have displayed and the dispatch of an 052C is in no way surprising. Shenzhen was for a very long time the most modern indigenous unit in the PLAN and she undertook the most foreign cruises. Now the new ships are undertaking such ships. The fact is that you can not disprove what I have identified, that is why the above quoted post was so short.
That does not explain why the Shenzhen keeps on going to cruises even when the 052C arrived, then the 052C arrived, then the 051C arrived, then the 054 arrived, then the 054A arrived. Or for that matter, why the 052 like the Harbin keeps going to cruises like to Australia and Korea in 2008.
Does not explain why the Sovs never went to any cruise at all, even though the PLAN first received them in 1998. The first Plan Sov that ever went to an overseas trip was only this year, and that was to a Russian naval base in the Far East. This was also the first trip for any of the Jiangkai frigates, the first came out in 2006.
For that matter, the 052B, which went into commission in 2003, never went into a cruise until this year to a trip to Russia and then Europe. The 052C, which went into commission in 2004, never engaged in any overseas cruise until this very moment.
They send the Shenzhen out, and even the older 052 because they’re only fairly modern, emphasis in fairly, decent, not too threatening, and yet at the same time, don’t expose the PLAN’s latest tricks. As a matter of fact, some in the JMSDF thought the PLAN didn’t reciprocate fairly during the exchange visits when the Shenzhen visited Japan and the Takanami visited China; they thought that they should have sent at least a 052B or 052C instead. I think the PLAN has overplayed the Shenzhen card and the PLAN knows it. Next time, we should be seeing more of the other ships getting their share of overseas cruises.
I picture the IDF as what the F-17 would have been if it never migrated to F404 engines. The IDF was so underpowered compared to other aircraft in its size range it makes me think they must have had something else planned before the Mirage 2000/F-16 purchases.
If the IDF is underpowered, its underpowered in the same TWR range as the JF-17 and the Gripen. The IDF is actually slightly stronger than the other two.
That is a tactic, but if the missile has HOJ/ARM capabilities, that will assist it in successfully engaging an aircraft.
HOJ and ARM are not the same. They’re both passive but that’s the only thing they got in common.
HOJ only works if the missile got **successfully** jammed. If the missile did not jet jammed even when there are many jammers around, it will operate under business as usual and won’t go into HOJ. If the missile got successfully jammed, and there are multiple jammers around, it will only home in to the jammer that made the successful jam, not the other jammers. For a missile to be jammed, the jammer has to match the exact wavelength and waveform the missile uses. So its very discriminatory. Having said that, jamming a missile with CWI seeker isn’t easy.
An ARM however isn’t as discriminating and just goes after something that’s in its threat library. You can’t use that air to air because being meant for ground targets, an ARM lacks a lead targeting profile, which is needed against aircraft. Going after a pulse radar rather a continuous lighted source also gives a higher error of margin, which means that going after a pulse radar has to be treated with the same tracking and resolution level as a mid phase update, and something else has to be a seeker to run for the terminal end game, the solution being an hybrid ARM-ARH, which no one has yet.
An AWACs or a ‘sentry’ fighter could feed the missile data. There definitely is a use for the datalink in the terminal phase.

They are incapable of generating and feeding the kind of data you need in the terminal phase. The data used in the terminal phase is not just a high data rate, but continuous wave, all made very rapidly and at very high frequencies. The kind of radar an AWACS uses is a pulse usually a low to mid PRF, and set at a much lower frequency and at a much lower pulse rate for sheer range and range determination (time between pulses is used for range determination). The fighter is between the AWACS to the missile seeker’s, in terms of frequency, pulse rate, scan rate but its still pulse, and pulse doppler does not provide the data and exact unambigious precision the missile seeker uses with CW.
Further more you really don’t know how radar homing missiles home do you? They got a receiver in one end, and a receiver in the other end. The front receiver is behind the emitting antenna on the nose as a separate unit, because unlike pulse radars, this emitting antenna is only a 100% emitter and does not have a receive cycle. What the missile does is to compare the results received in the front end to the results in the back end. So base on those results it knows its heading or receding from the target. This system is so precise that the missile can actually physically hit the moving target without trying to use a proximity fuse.

Assuming that the host plane is still tracking the target (which under some circumstances it may not, as it may be turning away to avoid missiles aimed at it). There is a good chance that if the missile’s seeker has lost the target, the missile itself does not have the kinetic energy to double around and still assume it has enough energy left to make the kill.
At this point, its better to put your bets on the second missile fired after the first one.
So if the rumors about the AIM-120D having a dual-pulse motor turn out to be true, your cheetah just grew an extra pair of legs..:D
Every US BVRAAM since the AIM-7M should have a dual mode motor with lofting.
