The reason why IR is used is because active radar guidance (at that time) does not discriminiate and resolve well enough against coastal formations and sea beds, all of which create clutter. And there is one reason why IIR is only going to be a limited idea for AshMs; water vapor often acts as an effective barrier against IR.

You’re kidding me. Kh-31A only has 91kg of warhead, while a YJ-83 has at least double of that. The range of the Kh-31A is much more limited, up to 70km, and its never been proven or sighed that the Su-30 can carry more than four.
You don’t think the PLAAF and PLANAF has tested all this? The PLAAF has stopped buying Su-30MKKs last 2004. After that, they acquired JH-7As and updated H-6s. The PLANAF never went beyond one regiment of Su-30MK2 with the Kh-31A.

5m? Only in the very final phase of flight. Supersonic AshMs generally are around 10 to 30m. You don’t have terrain following autopilot that will work at supersonic speeds, and both drag and turbulence are immense at sea level.
Subsonic AshMs go down to 3m, and one or two like the Gabriel goes down to 2m.

I wasn’t implying that it isn’t good. I know it’s not as good as some jets like the F-15 or more powerful versions of the F-16, but as you pointed out it’s still very comparable to many other current fighters, and as such I don’t get why it gets criticized so much.

I’d say we’ve all made good arguments as to why the F-CK-1 should be considered a bit better of a fighter plane than some seem to want to give it credit for.
There is also some criticism that the engines have long spooling times, but I have yet to verify this.
I think what is much more limiting to the Ching Kuo is the amount of fuel. Two small engines combined produce more internal friction than one single larger engine, and as result they consume more fuel despite being turbofans. At the same time, to begin with, the fuel isn’t that much. I’m not sure if the plane only carries around 1800 to 2100kg of internal fuel.
So your loiter time and operating radius isn’t a lot, even relative to small fighters. But then the armament is not intended to support a high duration fight either, with only these much missiles. You’re supposed to get the job done and go back home. It’s very much a point defense fighter. I personally think that the plane has the potential to be one of the best light fighters if the airframe is using a GE F404 instead, even if the thrust numbers end up being lower. However, saving more fuel means having more fuel to use your ABs more often.
Of course having CFTs would help a lot. The drawback of CFTs are their own weight and draggy aerodynamics, so you don’t want to have them on your back when you’re drawn in a fight.

With fixed inlets a MiG-29 will not pass Mach 2 similar to a F-16.
A fixed inlet allows a rise in power related to speed up to the design point of it. In most cases it is around Mach 1,5. After that the airflow becomes restricted and the power drops considerably from that (the inlet becomes clogged !) No regulated airflow = no power from that.
That happens because the fixed inlet is optimized for subsonic acceleration and cruise, not for top speed. A variable inlet does offer a much more flexible range of operation, but at the expense of weight, at least 150kg per inlet.
If you want the inlet to enable Mach 2.5, you can, but it would be at the expense of the low end performance.
If I choose the Mirage III, the MiG-21 or the F-104 did not matter.
When it comes to the Su-24 or MiG-23BN/MiG-27 the difference from fixed inlets can be seen clearly. The same frontal drag, the same installed thrust/engines, but the supersonic speeds are well below Mach 2.
Again, that is because of subsonic optimization. Said planes probably perform better at low speed and low heights than the planes with variable inlets.

J-10s never got a two seater until late in the program. The first testing and trials regiment, and the first operational regiment never got the benefit of training from a two seater, and both were formed without training from such.
There are planes like the J-8s that never had a dedicated two seater at all. J-8 regiments are supplemented with JJ-6 trainers.

I think the F-CK-1 produces 8600-8900kg total from both engines, and the FC-1 produces 8300 from its RD-93. WS-13 only makes it 8600kg.
I’m not very sure how DSI helps. However the pilot on the F-16 with the DSI inlet, which is using the less powerful F100 commented that the plane felt it had the more powerful GE F110 engine instead. He may be exaggerating things a bit, but definitely on the positive.
The inlet on the F-15 is a variable one. The F-16 inlet is probably more advanced because of the calculations and aerodynamic modeling that went into it. But it is one with more compromises, since no matter what, a variable inlet makes a more flexible compromise in low and high speeds. Most of the fixed inlet designs are being tuned against the low to midrange.
Very briefly in clean and max AB with surplus power installed, when a Mirage IIIC from the 50s with 6 tons of thrust can go Mach 2+ thanks to its inlet-system or the F-111 from the 60s with its TFs. Above Mach 1,5 a fixed inlet becomes clogged and the related drop in power from that occurs.
The F-16 has other limiting factors, and one of them is canopy drag. That big bubble canopy has its perks and disadvantages also. Another is that turbofans are not as efficient as turbojets at higher speeds. And still another is that the Mirage III and the F-111 (in swept position) have acutely swept wings for minimal drag. That was a very different era where planes are gunning for speed mostly and maneuverbility second.
I agree that the engine power for the IDF could certainly be higher, and that its TWR isn’t the best out there, but it’s not as if it has the TWR of an airliner or anything….
The TWR still amounts to .90 roughly, and that’s superior to 3rd generation fighters, including the Phantom and the F-104. Its about as good as the Gripen and the FC-1, and not far from the Mirage 2000. The F-16C with the F100-220E drops below 1.0 (block 32/42).
You can get to Mach 2 with a fixed inlet, look at the F-16, but you won’t get more than a few hundredths of a Mach past it.
Not really. You can get Mach 3 with a fixed inlet if you design it intentionally. You can get even Mach 4.

Maybe the US has recorded more tests, but only decide to leak once. Leaking too often to the media and you probably will have an internal clampdown.
J-7 and J-8 are not that standard as not all units fly them, snice these other units will also be flying Su-30, Su-27, and J-10. But YJ-8X is a very encompassing and versatile standard since it has both air and sea launched version, launched from destroyers, frigates and FACs, and as well as a sub launched version. It is also now being supplemented by the new YJ-62, already in operational use with 2 destroyers, whose export version is derated at 280km just to meet MTCR.
Suffice to say, China has no need for any Russian ASM strike platform with the sole exception if China decides to buy Su-33s for the Varyag. Lack of carrier experience is the big hole here.

Harpoon is the current standard which all ASMs are measured against. It is smart and quite nimble. For a given weight, that’s like 3 Harpoons vs. one Club/Brahmos. I would rather have the numerical advantage.

Su-30 and Su-34 cannot sustain Mach 1.2/Mach 1.4 at low altitude flight. What makes you think they can? Drag eats up power, and Su-30/34 wings are designed for maneuverbility not low interdiction speed. Going supersonic at low altitude will burn up your fuel rather quickly. You’re the one short of proof, trying to say you can intercept a low flying interdictor. Furthermore, design of the Flanker, meant more for medium altitude performance, isn’t meant to ride smoothly over low air turbelence. I doubt that an Su-30 can chase down an Su-24 Fencer or MiG-27 for this reason.

You really have no idea what a Harpoon can do. Harpoons can set themselves up for a multiaxis attack. They can do waypoints towards the target. They can go past the target and attack from another direction. They can be diverted midway in flight to attack another target or if the primary target has already been sunk. They can respond to changes of enemy tracking radar to determine if a lock on is present and will try to make evasive maneuvers.
SAMs near to the target and than SAMs does not where the target will be next moment at Mach 3 speed at such low altitude. It is near impossible to get a hit.

Can’t say much about avionics, much too vague. F-CK-1 currently has the more robust datalnik and IFF system through the C/D model. The FC-1 has a larger radar set, which has its advantages in the future.
In terms of looks and emo appeal, I would go with the F-CK-1. Even for an old design it looks remarkably sleek and modern even today. The FC-1 also looks very good especially in flight, but a bit more industrial.
Both are undoubtedly very maenuverable planes. Wingloading should not be an issue, both have fairly F-16 sized wing proportions to a low weight. When in a knife fight, it does not matter if one blade is one inch longer than the other, or if one blade feels nicer on the hand than the other.
Having DSI has its advantages, but I like the original Northrop concept of using the LERX to divide an air layer to feed the engine intake at high AoA.
I think the real difference between the two planes is one big engine vs. two small engines. In terms of maintenance, powerplant growth, and fuel consumption, I would favor the former over the latter. If the F-CK-1 was in a configuration that was powered by a GE F404 instead, I would have preferred it, but right now, the odds are for the FC-1.

At high altitude Su-30 can fly faster, Radar can see further the threats on horizon, club range is limited by MTCR and can fly faster towards the targets so giving more time for Su-30 to do simultaneous BVR fight or disenage rapidly after firing missiles.
At high altitude the Su-30 will not fly faster, because of the sheer weight of the missile. Unlike the JH-7A, the Su-30’s aerodynamics are meant for maneuverability and low speed turning. It is not meant for fast cruising and low flight like the JH-7A. I doubt that an Su-30 can catch even a JH-7A flying low, and an Su-30 won’t catch an F-111, Tornado, or Su-24 at the deck either. You have no idea that the planes are optimized for speed low level flight, and these requires a specially designed set of aerodynamics. An Su-30 would have a difficult time at high speed in low level due to its low wing loading which will subject the aircraft to a lot of shaking and turbulence, and its airframe and wings are indeed considerably draggy, since the airframe and the wing are meant to be maneuverable, whereas the JH-7A is acutely swept, have a higher wing loading, which will give you a smooth ride along the deck.

It is certainly not slow. One article described a whole formation of them dropping from 30,000ft, then suddenly pulling up near sea level. Lol, a perfect text book beam maneuver that will drop the plane off the radar by exploiting doppler notch and enter the target area at low altitude.
The wings are well swept for low drag. The radar is quite big, somewhere in between a MiG-29 and an Su-27, and it is a slotted array with modern electronics.

Except that the JH-7A is a much bigger and longer ranged plane, and you probably only have a hundred because the PLAAF/PLANAF still has other alternatives including updated H-6s, J-10s and J-11Bs. YJ-83 is lighter than Kh-59 but this means you can carry more. Unlike the Kh-59, the YJ-83 does not require an external datalink pod to extend its datalink range. A JH-7A can carry four of these missiles, while an Su-30MKK can only carry two Kh-59, which also suffers from an RCS problem due to having an exposed turbojet. The YJ-83 keeps its engine within the missile boreline.

JH-7A radar is down graded stuff from Phozotron JL-10A project. China can collect all the hardware of making radar but it cannot make the software to fully exploit it. u can only make medium tech stuff like FC-1
There is no proof that the radar is derived from Phazotron’s. The designation JL-10A is not the least bit Phazotron’s ((which underlines your sheer ignorance on that matter—even on Russian radars)) but that of the Chinese manufacturer. The radar was already flying on the JH-7 prototype in the mid to late nineties even before China got Zhuks for evaluation, and those went to a completely different company.

The radar only needs to spot the launching vehicle. I doubt you can launch the missile at 400km.
Iskander-M is bigger than Sunburn and can fly around 27km but it is claimed to be stealthy and no antimissile system can destroy it despite its mach 4 terminal speed. I have yet to see operational supersonic missile downing.
