Really the worth of it is not that important, unless you bought it for resale. To me, what’s important is that you like it and that it represents a period in history the likes of which we will never see again.
At any rate it is one of the nicer ones I’ve seen (I’m no expert, have just been thinking about getting one for my collection sometime in the near future,) most just have a cutdown artillery shell for the base and no engraving.
Thanks, 😉 I thought they were perhaps rose petals or the like but wasn’t sure.
The 167th FS WV ANG “Coonskin Boys” also had many of their F-51D’s adorned with Disney nicknames and artwork
I love it, only here could I run across a Mustang fan from Switzerland who knows about my local ANG! This is indeed a great forum! 😎 😀
Martin would you happen to have any photos of a Drexel E. Crites who flew with the 167th. FS, WV-ANG? He was one of 21 members of the squadron killed in the crash of a C-47 near what is now Yeager Airport in Charleston, WV in 1951. 🙁
Could someone tell me what is going on with the red “bomb bursts” in two of the shots?
According to Skinner’s grandson the original photo is matted and has the name of a studio in London in the corner, so you may very well be right, Dan. He doesn’t remember ever seeing a color version, however. Not that it matters yours is a plausible explaination none the less.
I experienced the same thing with photos of my father that were colorized and his ribbons ended up being the wrong colors. I remember he was really upset about it, LOL!
Thank you gentlemen, am I imagining things or do the colors seem reversed? I was thinking maybe it was a bullion patch and the light was causing it to look this way.
Quinny, I too am new to this forum but already feel as though I have found a second home. You will find that the people here are not only possess a vast knowledge of aviation but are very gracious and willing to help.
Lseter,
Lockheed P-38J-15LO #43-28431 “Happy Jack’s Go Buggy” had an olive drab anti-glare panel (that comes directly from his autobiography.) The recreation of Jack’s plane done by the Flighter Collection back in the 90’s did feature invasion stripes underneath the wings, but I don’t have any photos in my collection showing the underside of the original plane’s wings in any detail. I know for sure that other 79th. Fighter Squadron planes had invasion stripes on both the tops and bottom so it would be a safe assumption that his plane did as well.
Remember too that the plane only flew with the stripes for a short time as he was shot down by flak on June12th. and evaded 200 miles through enemy territory to an Allied controlled area.
Attached are a photo of Jack in his P-38 on D-Day, where the stripes on top can be seen, and another 20th. Fighter Group P-38 which was crashed by 20th. HQ pilot George Wemyss on D-Day with the invasion stripes very clearly shown. Also, if you will take a look at an earlier thread I started here:
http://forum.keypublishing.co.uk/showthread.php?t=31466
you will see a shot of another 79th. P-38 taxiing for takeoff at King’s Cliffe where the stripes are easily seen.
I’ve been meaning to call Jack for a few weeks now, this might be yet another good reason to do so.
Hope this helps. If you need anything else don’t hesitate to ask and if you’re doing a model of the plane please post a picture of the finished product!
Too bad not all relics of the war are found in such good condition.
My daughter reminded me that there’s a band out there now named SR-71 and there is also an unsigned band named “Memphis Belle”, I know, I know, not song lyrics but continuing on with my post above about 707…
John C., you’re right, Iron Maiden sure did have a song called “Tailgunner” and it also mentioned the Enola Gay:
Tail end Charlie in the boiling sky
The Enola Gay was my last try
Now that this Tailgunner’s gone
No more bombers (just one big bomb)
Oh yeah you didn’t forbid bands actually named for specific planes… anyone remember the one hit wonders 707?
Blue Oyster Cult had a song about the Me-262 way back when. CCR’s “Travelin’ Band” starts off with “737 comin’ out of the sky…”
Sad Sad news, indeed.
