LMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I could do it, I’m under contract with a small t-shirt screen printer in Ohio.
I was messing around tonight with some grpahics and came up with this, LOL, have fun, Steve! 😀
Please allow me to add my voice to this chorus, finding this forum was indeed one of the happiest accidents I have ever had and was definitely one of the highlights of 2004 for me.
Happy New Year to everyone whereever you may be!
One possible way to track down what unit he was with is to check escape/evasion photos where the men are wearing the same clothes. In many instances on USAAF bases (I can’t say if it was the same with RAF bases) there weren’t alot of civilian clothes available and nearly every man was photographed wearing the same suit and tie.
The Luftwaffe had files where they could determine what group a pilot/crewman was from in this manner. If you can find a unit that was active in the area on that date whose escape/evasion photos all match what the man in the photo is wearing it could narrow things down fairly quickly.
Yes, it was considered but never came to fruition. Oddly enough I just transcribed a 1976 audio letter from Col. Harold Rau, former Commander of the 20th. Fighter Group and he mentions how he would have loved to have had the Merlin-powered Lightnings. Take a look at Warren Bodie’s excellent book “The Lockheed P-38 Lightning” for more about the subject.
Hi Locobuster.
is this book any good?
Andy
Andy, I am only about half way through the book at this point and thus far it’s been a good read, a lot of vintage pictures and personal accounts from former 355th. personnel, a few pages of excellent color shots and even a fold-out map of the airfield. While it’s not the greatest book of the type I have ever read it is definitely good. I love books with personal accounts from the folks who were there and this sure fits that bill. There are also several excellent lists at the back of the book that include all of the 355th. pilots and an extensive list of their planes with names, serials, etc.
I’d say between this, and the other book about the base Mr. Wells has written, you could learn everything you ever wanted to about Steeple Morden and the men who were stationed there.
I got mine from a buddy in the UK who attended a book signing, it’s even autographed. He surprised me with it just in time for Christmas. 😀
Two books, “Steeple Morden Strafers” by Ken Wells and “Warbirds” by Jeff Ethell as well as a replacement for my broken copy of IL2 Forgotten Battles, a copy of Warbirds III and a little motorized fan in the shape of an airplane. My family finds me easy to shop for, believe me, LOL! Oh and I also got a great CD full of excellent pics from a nice man in the UK, thanks again, Mike! 😀
Better late than never, I suppose, hope you had a great birthday!
Like Dave Homewood I really am thankful for this and other forums of this kind for helping to distract me from what was pretty much a bad year.
In this coming year I am looking forward to the completion of my multi-media CD-Rom on the 79th. Fighter Squadron and it’s release. I am also planning on getting to an airshow or two and maybe a nice vacation sometime in the Spring.
Beyond that the possibilities are endless, I’m sure there will be another project that demands all of my free time and I’ll start off on another interesting journey like the one that is now starting to wind down. I may even go to school, who knows! 😉
All of you have a great holiday and a bright and prosperous New Year, and thanks again for all of the support! 🙂
What an outstanding piece and, as said above, thankfully it’s in the hands of someone who can appreciate it for what it is and not just for what it is worth!
Like this? 😀
I would’nt just limit it to Memphis Belle, lots of other good threads regarding filming and films and T/V.
You make a very good point but I would be concerned about getting overwhelmed with things to add, so I thought it best if the site be limited to a single movie or show. I would be willing to bet that there have been over 100 photos from Memphis Belle alone posted on this forum thus far, that would make a pretty large site to begin with. I can only imagine whatelse is around that could be included.
I could have a rough shell of a site ready to upload in a few weeks, and I have alot of free time right now. Later on, though, I am hoping to have a second job and I have a project of my own in the works.
This could all be done on a free server like Geocities but the popup ads and everything tend to detract from the site IMHO. Also there’s always the limited bandwidth with those kinds of sites and, as B-17man mentioned, I think this might be a pretty popular site because it ties in so many interests, movie making, WWII, warbirds…
If not a book or magazine as you suggest, how about a website? Then more photos and stories can be added as people come up with them!
I’d be willing to put a “The Making of Memphis Belle” site together if someone would donate the domain name and server space. 😎
Have a great one!
