Many thanks to all – very helpful. It was certainly an odd looking machine.

Nice shots Maikel. The MEA was my favourite. Nice to see that the UK is not the only place with foul weather! ๐Ÿ˜€

Brings tears to the eyes to look at these. The Transavia 737 shot was taken at the old terminal wasn’t it? I remember the only Transavia Caravelle I ever saw (PH-TRX) at the old terminal on 15 October 1975. We had been laying concrete on the then new runway and work stopped because the fog was so bad so I went up onto the spectators terrace to see what was in. The fog was so bad you could just make out the parked aircraft and the Caravelle taxied out into the murk and took off.

That’s interesting, I didn’t realise they had started with a PIA aircraft.

Many thanks for all the replies. I think I will have to get hold of those Flypast articles. Burtonwood seems to be mentioned but in the second link that Cotteswold gave there is a clue to the Airwork involvement. The design office in Hounslow and the workshop at Heston carried out the designs and initial fittings which is why there are 3 aircraft mentioned at Heston with the balance of the work completed at Loughborough. More digging obviously needed! I would love to be able to buy a huge block of the old copies of Flypast.

I remember this well because at the time I was in Saudi and I had applied for a job working in Cargo at Baghdad Airport. I didn’t get the job as I was not a US national but this incident plus some non-aviation related events in Iraq made me feel that perhaps I was lucky not to get it.

Civilspotter – what absolutely magnificent shots. Truly some of the best I have seen for a long while. Thanks for taking the time and trouble to share them with us.

Only just noticed this – a very nice read and good shots, particularly of the airport on the “auld sod”. ๐Ÿ˜€

Thanks again Wieesso. As I say, I think there were fatalities in the crash as well. Ironically enough my dad worked at Freetown Airport (Lunghi) for a while but it was before the accident.

Longshot – You are quite correct. I meant to say Dublin-London and put Rome again ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

Although the airport is more or less decided as Ciampino, I was looking at some other photos of the same trip and I was wondering if anyone could identify the airline for the DC-3 in the background of this shot. It is just under the wing of the Connie and it has fairly distinctive tail markings.

Longshot – you could well be right. They were only ever used on the Shannon-Dublin-Rome and Dublin-Rome routes. Here is another shot taken I am assuming of Rome (Not sure). You can see part of the registration (ADD of EI-ADD) on the wing.

Longshot – you are right when you say Kano was not on the route to South America. The airlines and aircraft that came through Kano were either on their way to Lagos and sometimes Accra or going directly South towards the Congo and South Africa. I don’t know what KLM were flying in those days but they have had a long time presence at Kano and I think they still fly there now. It could have been as you say a Shell charter as it seems a small aircraft to be flying such a long route from Amsterdam.

Plough – An impressive piece of detective work. Well done! I have been following this thread over on Pprune and was beginning to think it would never be identified.

    Maybe a wild guess:
The name “Saint Nevin” or Kevin directed my search to
    http://1000aircraftphotos.com/Contributions/McKillop/6083.htm
“Aerlinte ร‰ireann Teoranta” EI-ACR, ACS, ADA, ADD
    “…Dublin-Rome routes”
The old airport CIAMPINO had railroad tracks east of threshold of runway 15

Yes I do believe that you have it Wieesso. One of the blokes on the Irish forum told me that Aer Lingus operated a short-lived service to Ciampino using the Constellation so this is probably where it is. My father was with this particular flight as there is a picture of him in front of the aircraft. It is nice to get that one nailed down.
