I have often thought that a book on the history of Airwork would sell. In addition to the various bits and pieces mentioned already, Airwork also had a facility at the old Glasgow (Renfrew) Airport in the fifties and early sixties undertaking some kind of repair or maintenance work on military aircraft.
In addition to the Abu Dhabi ADDF work in the early 1970s I am sure that Airwork were also involved in offshore helicopter support work from the old Abu Dhabi Airport. I remember having a good bevy or two at the Airwork mess in those days. Its a shame that the history of Airwork seems for the most part to have been lost.

Anyone know when this was or what the aircraft registration is?

Matt

The info on the Youtube link says it was Alada and the reg was D2-FFR. A quick trawl on the internet said it was operating a flight for DHL and it happened on 26th September. They have been around for a while, I remember watching one (Aeroflot) take off at Kano Airport Nigeria in 1960 and marvelling at how long it took to climb off the runway into the sky

But Heathrow aren’t flogging off any of their runways.

Therefore, as per the OP, Macrihanish is indeed the longest runway for sale in the UK. 😀

Yes that is true Grey Area, mind you if things go badly for BAA, Heathrows runways might well be flogged off although I was reading yesterday that Ferrovial will fight tooth and nail to keep it. On the subject of airports for sale, I always thought that shares in Manchester would have been a good buy and back in the mid nineties there was some talk of the airport going public so I wrote a letter to the finance people at – was it Manchester Corporation?? (Can’t remember) enquiring about buying shares and got a blunt letter back saying that they had absolutley no intention of selling the airport or making shares available which was a pity. I have followed the fortunes of Manchester since the mid sixties and it strikes me as being an airport which has always been managed and run by people who are keen to see it succeed.

i though fairford, brize and lyneham had fairly large runways too?

I don’t think Newforest wanted this thread to drift onto this topic but for the record the operational lengths of them are Fairford 10,000ft, Brize 10,007!, Lyneham 7,828ft. Fairford has 1,000ft over-runs at each end giving it 12,000 overall but as I say the operational length is 10,000ft. At least Macrihanish will continue as an airfield. There is talk of RAF Odiham being sold off for development and Lyneham is set to close isn’t it?

If it was the longest runway for sale in the UK then Heathrow would be flogging off one of its runways (12,800). Macrihanish has a long runway at 10,000ft but its not even the longest miltary runway in the UK either (Boscombe Down is at 10,500ft). As for the longest runway in Europe, I don’t know where they get this cobblers. All the runways at Frankfurt are 13,000ft or over, both Madrid Airport and Torrejon Air base have runways over 14,000ft and there are many more elsewhere in Europe. It just seems to be the nonsense that the media seem to spout about aviation in general, they rarely get the facts or stories right.

Well I managed a trip a few years back within 24 hours to the Middle East (Saudi Arabia) and back which went a bit like this.

11am Railway Tavern in Hungerford – having a couple of last pints before
another 6 month stint saying cheerio to landlord

3pm ish??? Dep LHR

11.30pm ish??? Arr Jeddah

2am ish??? – Dep Jeddah having been deported – BA held aircraft to wait for
myself and another deportee

11am Railway Tavern in Hungerford – landlord said as I walked in “I thought
you were going back to Saudi?”

The deportation was extemely unpleasant and my left arm was still shaking when we arrived back in Heathrow.

I would suggest some things:

Register a domain name eg middleeastaircraft.com. Don’t use a so called subdomain such as bt/middleeastaircraft.com since if you want to change the company that connects your computer to the internet (your Internet Service Provider), your web address will change, too. Also you will lose your email address eg keith@bt.com.

What you see on a website is broken down into “pages”. These are computer files containing words and pictures with instructions as to how they should be laid out on the screen. These pages can be prepared and viewed on your own PC, but for others to see them using the internet they need to copied onto a computer known as an internet server. Storing your files on such as server is known as hosting. There are many hosting companies.

Hosting companies will provide a certain limited amount of disc space for storing your web page files. Additionally they will provide a certain limited amount of data transfer – every time someone looks at your website data needs to be transferred from the internet server to their PC.

Music and video can also be stored in a webpage. These take up a lot of space on the internet server disc and involve large amounts of data transfer from the internet server to the PC of anyone listening to music or watching video.

Broadly speaking, the amount of resources used in transferring data from the internet server to all the PC’s of people looking at your webpages is known as the amount of bandwidth used.

“Professional” web site design tools such as Frontpage and Dreamweaver will certainly take scores or hundreds of hours to learn. I don’t know anything about low cost tools that will let you build your own website but I suspect that they will generally be geared to producing simple websites.

Spitfire9 Many thanks for putting it in a straightforward manner. I am not going to do anything with Video or music, I want to keep it very simple to start with. The domain name advice is useful as well as I want it to stand out.

If you let us know who your service provider is then you could have some very specific information about what you already have available to you. Otherwise all you will get is generic information – a bit like asking which car you should buy next. Unless you have a need to spend money I would suggest this might be a sensible way to get advice specific to your self and potentially cheaper than buying a program such as Dreamweaver or Photoshop!.

Chris – I have not got as far as the service provider yet. Basically I have the raw material and I want to next give a bit of thought as to how I am going to organise the site – by time periods or locations/areas or both. From what I am starting to see about Dreamweaver it sounds very good but beyond my capablilities at the moment. I have at least moved on quite a bit from the advice given to me a couple of weeks ago that I needed a “host” and that was it??

This is exactly the sort of guidance I was after. Very helpful indeed. Everyone I have asked so far, who “knows” about computers, really don’t know it turns out.
Many thanks to everyone who replied.
