If the people we employ is a good indication of standards then I would say standards are getting lower all the time. We take on quite a few people in their late teens i.e. not that long out of school (there are two schools and one college in the district) and nearly all of them have difficulty with spelling and correct use of words. Coupled with “attitude”, it’s almost as if they need retraining to enter the world of work. We had an 18 year old temp a month ago who informed us that she “didn’t do phones” when asked to answer incoming calls. I don’t blame the children so much as the schools.
Although it was not four engined, what about the Aviation Traders Accountant? It was similar in design to some of the types mentioned here.
According to my Military Serials Book EK695 was part of a batch (EK601-EK967) allocated to Blackburn Firebrands Mk IV/V.
Martin / Wieesso – maximum respect for the ID!
Why not try posting it on the History & Nostalgia section of PPRUNE – There are some very knowledgeable people on it?
I was at school in Anglesey during 1968-70 and a friend and I cycled up to Mona one day. I don’t recall seeing any buildings there at all which is not to say there weren’t. However I seem to remember it as being flat, bleak and windswept.
The Dakota was G-ALYG.
Are you sure David? According to the Civil register, G-ALYG was allocated to an Auster 5.
Another excellent report Planehunter. Always a pleasure to read.
An excellent site Newforest. Certainly one of the most interesting Airport sites I have come accross. A guide to how it should be done I think.
Is that the site you meant Old Git?
That’s the one Wilhelm, although I have not had a response to my query yet.
Is there any source for this book in the US and at a reasonable price? Last time I looked it was out of print and the cost for used copies was prohibitively expensive.
Thanks!
You are certainly right there. Amazon has a used copy from somone in Fort Lauderdale at a price of USD$700! I thought it was a misprint! I will keep my eye out at second hand bookshops, thee are a few that have good aviation sections.
Gregair – That was very helpful, thank you. I typed the word into the search engine and it has led me to a lot of related stuff including an unofficial SAAF Forum. Interesting to see what the word ‘Vlamgat’ means btw!
Thanks again,
Keith
A pleasure to read as always.
