Landing sequence of an Air Hong Kong B747 approaching Chequerboard Hill and then making the right turn (plus 2 x additional landing shots). Considering the difficulty of the approach, Kai Tak had a good safety record. I can only recall an aircraft running off the end of the runway into the sea (Air China B747??). Although there may have been others. Pictures taken from the top of the airport car park. Sorry for the quality but apart from the fact it was getting dark, my camera was not that great.
1st two pics are coming out of the turn at Chequerboard hill and lining up
(Virgin A340 – G-VAEL). There was a joke about a pax looking into a window from the aircraft and seeing his favourite soap on the TV in the lounge 😀
Mod – I thought I would add the rest of the pics to this thread to keep them all together rather than start a seperate thread in the photos section if thats OK?
Nice pictures indeed. But shouldnt they be in the picture section of the forum lol:p
Yes you are right. I did’nt think. Sorry Mod – is it possible to move them?

Superb Shots of Kai Tak, back in 1996 i was fortunate enough to be allowed on the flight deck for the landing in to Kai Tak. It’s a memory that wont fade away
Thanks Dan, I would have loved to have been on the flight deck when we were landing. A friend of mine who worked for Air Hanson flew on a Martinair DC.10 into Kai Tak and the captain called him up to the cockpit for the landing and like you he said it was an experience he would never forget.
A few more – the restaurant had some of the nicest grub I have ever tasted.
I have just had a look and Congrats on the new website – will you be adding a section for older photos at all (Laker, BUA, Dan air etc)?
Regards
OG
Thanks Soundbarrier – once I have mastered my new scanner I will have a crack at mastering Google earth.:D
Out of interest I took these when I was down in Buenos Aires at the museum next to Aeroparque Jorge Newbery in ’98.
If you zoom in on Goa airport at INS Hansa there is a TU-142 and an IL 38 plus a few helicopters (Helix?). Sorry I am useless at downloading a pic to post or giving co ordinates – perhaps a more enlightened memeber of this thread may be able to do it for me!!

Good report Lucas, Its a few years since I passed through Ezeiza. Did you manage to visit the Aeroparque Jorge Newbery?
Do as i do and get the grandchildren to show you how
I think you’re right Steve. Embarrassing when I suppose we are expected to teach the younger generation how to do things BUT not on matters technical unfortunately. I am looking forward to getting these pictures posted.
Best Wishes

Are we talking about a 35mm neg/slide scanner, or a flat-bed style print scanner (or indeed the latter with a neg/tranny adapter)?
Either way, ramp the scanner up to the maximum input resolution possible (there will be a setting for this in the software), do a pre-scan and then crop the image accordingly, then do a final scan. You will end up with a huge image which, if you want to upload to forums like this, you will need to downsize using Photoshop or whatever just like you do with digital output. My recommendation is always scan at maximum resolution and do not reduce the input (scan) resolution to get close to the image size you want as max resolution followed by a downsizing in PS will always yield better quality results.

Andy, Many thanks for your response but to reply I am having to get my daughter to come around and explain this to me as I am a total technophobe. I will be back shortly.
Thanks
Keith
Many thanks Phil, I will get started this evening and hopefully should be able to start posting soon.
One thing I find bemusing is where you go to another country and take the nationality of that country thus earning a double barrelled moniker. I’m Irish so if I went to Shanghai and applied for Chinese nationality that would make me Irish-Chinese. Or when I was in Jeddah and had I applied for Saudi nationality (something very difficult to get incidentally) I would have become Irish-Saudi Arabian.
