If you contact Colonel Marek Lisiak (Defence Attache) at the Polish Embassy in London he can give you the tel no. for Mr. JB Cynk (I have lost it) who is a Polish AF historian.
Does anyway know yet what rehersals will be taking place on the Friday arrivals day?
There is usually a list of arrivals and rehersals you can buy but I don’t suppose it is finalised yet.
I have just seen her a couple of hours ago on my first visit to the Museum at Hurn – a beauty. The Sea Fury was looking good too.
The museum there is well worth a visit and there is a balcony you can go up to which overlooks the maintenance area where the Sea Vixen is kept. I also went into the Vulcan Cockpit of XH537 which was a first for me.
Least – 17 passengers (including myself) on a BA B777 Jeddah to London one week before the invasion of Iraq (second Gulf War) which may have had something to do with it-The service was very good though!!
I have been on numerous full flights – usually BA or BMI on EDI – LHR
Here is another one about to land on zero six along with Bristol Freighter G-AICT thrown in for good measure
I remember seeing a copy of Flight International in the late 60’s which had a picture of a Donaldson Britannia landing on 06 and just clearing the top of the barn like building. In 1968 or 69 myself and a couple of friiends were allowed to look around the Channel Airways Maintenance facility so long as we didn’t get in the way and we even walked up the single taxiway (from the maintenance area to the main runway) part way to watch a a Channel Viscount landing. It wouldn’t happen today.
Moggy and Snapper – many thanks for your help and I will PM you once I have got some info Moggy.
Thanks Again

I appreciate this is an aviation forum but I was wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction to try and find out about someone who died at Beaumont Hamel in WW1 and to see if they have a grave? I think Beaumont Hamel was part of the Battle of the Somme. I only have a name not a regiment. Any help much appreciated.
Many Thanks

LBARULES – I just wanted to say what a superb report and pictures – I really enjoyed it. This is how it should be done!!

when I was on holiday from college I used to visit my parents in Abu Dhabi who knew many ATCOs at the airport and one of them told me that an Abu Dhabi Defence Force Mirage had cut in front of a BOAC VC-10 on approach. The Captain of the VC-10 was furious and complaints were lodged etc but nobody ever found what happened (if anything). The Mirage pilots were a law unto themselves. I used to sit in the tower some mornings and on one occasion they informed the tower that 4 of the Mirages wanted to do a formation take off so two commercial flights had to hold while they taxiied up the whole length of the runway from the ADDF apron and got into position. this took nearly 20 minutes while they started up their engines and taxiied out. This was at the old airport not the newer one.
Although its a very long shot – lets hope the new owners have a more enlightened attitude towards viewing facilities.
Unfortunately I think the reality will be geared towards how to make more money.
I don’t know anything about window sizes but it drives me nuts when I can’t get a window seat. For me one of the pleasures of flying is not just the aircraft/airline/airport etc but being able to see where you are passing over. One of the best flights for that was flying back from Kinshasa in the Congo in a Swissair MD-11 and passing over tropical rainforest, the Sahara, the med and then into Geneva with the surrounding mountains. We stopped at Douala in the Cameroon and a Royal Flight Bae 146 had landed just before us with Prince Charles and Lady Di on an official visit. There was also a Cape Verde Nord 262 (I think) – I cursed myself for packing my camera in my suitcase.
Sadly Moggy, it’s not there any more
I keep finding references telling me that RAF Speke played a busy role during WWII, but I can’t seem to find out what it did or who was based there.
If anyone has any info, anecdotes, photo’s or whatever – I’d be delighted to see/hear them.
Thanks,
Roy.
Although I cannot lay my hands on them at this moment I have a number of photos of Speke in the late 40’s as my dad was a pilot with Aer Lingus and he regularly flew into Speke on DC 3s and was always taking pictures there. I always think that the old Speke Terminal was one of the most distinctive airport terminals in Europe for its time. Just about every new terminal being built now are just giant glass and tin boxes but I suppose its the only way huge numbers of travelllers can be accomodated.

In that case I better look up the airport bus timetable ! 😀
Any chance of a sneak preview Keith, maybe a cover shot ?
I have just sent the cover picture to your private e mail. I imagine to post it
on the forum would be construed as advertising so better to play safe! 😉
Rgds

that does seem odd but I took the e mail from their web site and I dont see any reason why they would would tell a fib. there was no connection with Pensacola – they said it was a trade so presumably they got something in return. I do like to get to the bottom of these things so I will try and contact pensacola directly.
As a post script to my original query on G-AGWE – The museum at Pensacola never had it apparently and the procurement director at Valiant Air Command told me that they gave it to someone who was going to restore it and they gave it to him in an “as is” condition. This was 8 or 10 years ago and from what they can remember it went to the Ovieda or Yeehaw-Junction (what a name) area of Florida. He said that recently there was an advert in the TRADE-A-PLANE paper that someone had been advertising AVRO parts so that may have something to do with it. So it is either sitting in “Yeehaw Junction” or what looks more likely it is now in pieces all over the place – another sad end.
I’ll be there Keith, got my day off sorted ! 😀
Look forward to seeing you Allen – I shall have to sort out some hot whisky! :p :p
