Ever seen a B52 barrel roll?

I don’t know if anyone here saw the B52 display at Mildenhall in the late 80s or early 90s (I will have to dig out the year) but it was described in “Aviation News” as truly staggering and it was. It was probably the most impressive display I have seen by a large jet and you would not have believed an aircraft that large could move like it did that day. It had taken off westwards with an immediate left turn and was over the hangers on the south side before the end of the runway. It was also the first display of a B52 which held the nose down after leaving the ground to gather speed and was copied by B52 display pilots for a few years after that at various displays. I think the pilot was Randy Ashworth?? who posed for photos afterwards – very impressive although I am a big Vulcan fan.

Quote: “pity as it would have been my first trip there” – wouldn’t fret, you aren’t missing much – unless, of course, you have a burning desire to visit an airport firmly stuck in an 80s time warp with orange tails everywhere!

Its a crying shame because a little investment in the right places could make such a difference – BHD is space age in comparison!

It certainly doesn’t sound up to much. Its just that there are a number of UK airports I have yet to fly to or from. I am going to Teesside (or whatever its called now) from Heathrow on Feb 18th and I have chalked in later this year trips to Jersey and Inverness. July will be my first trip into Shannon or Knock.

Visit an 80s time warp – no thanks – but 50s or 60s time warp? – now you are talking 😀 😀

    BA cut LHR-BFS in 2001, following September 11th 🙂

Thanks – Very odd – the Heathrow to Aldergrove route was one of the 3 main domestic shuttle routes and at one point was carrying more passengers than the Edinburgh run. Although I suppose the City Airport has taken a lot of traffic from Aldergrove – pity as it would have been my first trip there. 🙁

I am a little dubious about that because when I spoke to them they said the owner took it away. As for any connection between Pensacola and the Anson – again vague!

that does seem odd but I took the e mail from their web site and I dont see any reason why they would would tell a fib. there was no connection with Pensacola – they said it was a trade so presumably they got something in return. I do like to get to the bottom of these things so I will try and contact pensacola directly.

Any idea when and to where? Last time I went to the VAC the frame of G-AGWE’s fuselage was strung up in the roof of their hangar where I photographed it.

I sent an e mail to Valiant Air Command who have just replied and told me that the Anson went to Pensacola Museum, They traded it seven years ago apparently.

The loudest plane i’ve ever heard at take off was the B36 peacemaker……six turnin’ and four burnin’…… you’ve never heard anything like it!!

Where was that Steve? My two regrets aircraftwise are not seeing a B-36 and a Valkyrie flying.

Nobody has mentioned the main benefit of being old(ish).

That is that you would have lived through the golden age of aviation, i.e, the 50’s and 60’s!! Need I say more?

I could not have put it better myself.

As for grey hair – I still have a full head of dark brown hair at the age of 53 but this is more than offset by my haggard lizard-like features.

I don’t disagree with this but surely BA could move other airlines out eg Sri Lankan, KLM, as they are the terminal’s ‘Key’ airline?

I remember when T4 first opened it was just BA and KLM (& Air Malta???) but I suppose things are a lot busier now.
