Wouldn’t it be interesting to find out what the middle eastern people thought of us,seen as they only see the TV version of our lives as we see the same of theirs.

Well mate having spent a very large portion of my life living amongst muslims in the middle east and africa I can tell you that before I left Saudi Arabia (after five years there) I couldn’t cross the road from my house to buy some milk without having some bearded cretin either :
    a) try and run me down – as happened on a number of occasions.
    b) shout one of two things at me – either
    Fack yew!
    or
    Go home
I decided on the second option in the end and I couldn’t wait to see the back of the place or the people in it.

Anyone add any information on the Devon used by Prince Phillip and possibly assigned to the Queens Flight ?

Don’t know anything about the Devon but I can tell you that the then Prime Minister Harold Macmillan was involved in an emergency at Turnhouse in 1962 when the landing gear had not raised correctly on a Queens Flight Heron just after take off in 1962.
Prince Phillip was also in another Turnhouse emergency in 1967 when one of the Queens Flight Hs 748’s had the Starboard engine go u/s over Lockerbie of all places. The plane landed on the port engine and Prince Phillip went on to Balmoral by road – they were going to Aberdeen originally.

I know this thread is about West Africa but when I was in Saudi a friend of mine told me a Catalina had crash landed on the Saudi coast line south of the Gulf of Aqaba and the crew survived only to be shot by hostile bedouins. He said the wreckage was still there. I don’t know if there is any truth in this story as I have heard many a yarn in those parts. Perhaps a Catalina Buff may be able to throw some light on it.

Who? My candidate for this would be the great Julian Bream. OK so that’s classical but what the hell? No-one specified a particular type of music.

I am a big fan of both Julian Bream and John Williams but I would’nt say either of them are under-rated. I do think Leo Kottke is under-rated though. His track “Crow River Waltz” on his 6 & 12 string guitar album is one of the most beautiful pieces of acoustic guitar I have ever heard.

    Bert Weedon

    Moggy

Some might laugh at Bert Weedon being nominated but I saw him play in Torquay in 1967 and I thought he was excellent, even though I had just started getting into Jimi Hendrix at the time.

I am in a very serious problem right now, basically someone who was renting our spare room a few months back has run up massive debts £20,000+ by lying on various application form’s and also by using my details without my permission to increase the amount of credit they were offered.

All my bank accounts have now been locked, I have been banned from removing any cash from said accounts apart from a small amount of my weekly wages, and am facing going to court for fraud.

I have been told I have to prove 100% I had no involvement in this, but even if I do that my credit rating is ****** due to this address being on my credit file.

Also I have been told if I can not prove I had no involvement in all this then I face being made bankrupt and losing my home, all my savings and investments, along with everything I own.

The fact is this women is evil she has stole hundreds of pounds from her boyfriend, beats him up very very badly (yeah some people might laugh but if it was th other way round he would have the book thrown at him), and also got sacked from a job for stealing £75.

Anyway if anyone has any advice about how to deal with this nightmare then I would really be very grateful, until this is solved I’m just gonna spend all summer stuck in my house, no air shows no bbqs no firework events, no night’s down the pub, I am not allowed to take enough money out because of this 🙁

Actually it may not be as bad as it seems – I was in the same position not that long back and I would strongly suggest you go to the Credit agencies first with your side of the story. They are the ones buggering you up. then go to everyone else – bank, credit cards etc. If you are involving the police, put it in writing to them as well and include copies of your correspondence to the police to the credit people. A tone of absolute outrage (without bad language) helps. I would not even bother with the expense of a solicitor because they are not going to do any more than you can do yourself and last but not least this sort of thing is sadly very common.
If you want to hear a hard luck story, when my mum died in Ireland, I was in Saudi and my sister was in the Congo. When we arrived back in Ireland for her funeral a bloke she had seen from time to time had moved into her house and taken possession saying he had lived there with her for ten years (she had known him for less than two). It took seven years and 35,000 pounds (equivalent in sterling) to get him out if you can believe it.

Good luck anyway with your problem – if I can be of any help please send me a private message

How did this get away from aviation and into Conservative vs Liberal?

I totally agree – I am not sure if this is a thread about aircraft being refused permission to land or Lets Bash the U.S.A. If it is the latter then this thread belongs in another forum

Of Course one can always go back to when the French refused the U.S. permission to overfly France on their way from the U.K. to bomb Libya.
