last year I started to queue around 6am (having driven there) but the gates did not open until 7.30 (i think) which was a bit frustrating. As the flying display started about 10am there was not enough time to do the static area and find a reasonable spot for the start of the flying display.

What were the crowds like 6.00AM? What happened when they first started the security checks at the gates was there was no control, We went over from the campsite around 8.30AM on the first day and already there were large queues and what was happening was that people were walking along the queue as if going for a stroll and then melting into the queue at the top. The queue was so bulky and wide it was not easily noticeable. Its a shame as we started camping to avoid the traffic queues. Although I suppose you could say if you can’t beat them Join them. :diablo:

    You obviously didn’t listen properly.

The blame was not solely the engineer’s… it was the working practise and time pressure they were under. Too much work to do in too little hours.

I disagree – the blame was the engineers and he should have picked up on what the Storeman told him. He may have thought he was concientious but he was cutting corners and he therefore put the lifes of nearly 90 people at risk. If he had too much to do he should have raised it through the unions who were a lot stronger then than now. Whilst it may have been a mitigating factor, it seems too many people do not want to take responsibilty for their actions. Some years ago I smashed a bloke in the face who was ******* me off in a pub. In court my solicitor said it was caused by the alcohol but the magistrate pointed out to me that I was using it as an excuse and fined me accordingly. Something I totally accepted and considered myself lucky I didn’t get a custodial sentence.

I thought it was an excellent programme. I know I am pedantic but the aircraft was from Birmingham and it showed it taking off from Heathrow and I don’t know the airport it was shown approaching to land (view from cockpit) but it certainly was not Southampton although the pictures on the ground were obviously taken at the time of the emergency.

There was actually a use BEFORE the opening, when a Lithuanian TU-204 used it for parking. Does this count? Sorry, can’t recall date!

Thanks anyway OSH I had forgotten about the TU204. I will contact the BAA direct. I needed this information for a history project I have been doing for some time now on Turnhouse (30,000 words so far) I doubt if I will get it published but if not I am thinking of setting up a web site (cash permitting)

Can anyway give me the actual date of the taxiway opening and the first aircraft to use it? I am sure there was another thread on this info which I meant to run off but I can’t find it.

Excellent! I thought the stewardess looked like Adam Ant. I have got a couple of BOAC Junior Jet Club Log books which belong to me and my sister. I think they are a good idea for children to get them interested in aviation as the idea was to show a record of your flight (aircraft, registration, miles and time taken) and it was signed by the captain at the end of the flight. I will dig them out as I say and post copies of them. Sadly there are only details of two flights from Heathrow to Nigeria on a Britannia and Stratocruiser.

Very nice shots – even taking the weather conditions into account. The wheels on the Lear Jet look too small for the size of the aircraft.

The Control Tower is certainly spectacular. I passed through EDI on December 9th and could only see scaffolding so it has certainly shot up. Anything had to be an improvement on the old tower.

These are nice photo’s.Are you sure it is an ambulance? It seems to be a S.A.R helicopter as it has a winch.Anyway, what are “base jumpers”?

Yes you are probably right about it being an S.A.R. helicopter, my brother in law only thought it might be some kind of exercise with the Base Jumping. As has already ready been described what that is. Each to their own sport I suppose but it looks like madness to me.

I would suggest that unless you have large amounts of money to spend, you should concentrate on a small area of collecting. I have a fairly large collection of pre decimal UK coins and I concentrate on Florins and Half Crowns. The most importatnt thing apart from rarity is the condition of the coin/note and will make a lot of difference to the value. Talk to other collectors and do some research before you start laying money out.
If you should come accross a threepenny bit from 1937 with King Edward VIII
on the reverse please let me know. They were minted in 1936 just before he abdicated and a few got into circulation and are reckoned to be worth 25,000 each, check with your older relatives. I will give you 500 quid for it :p
    Good Luck

For the record… I challenged since I assumed that LFC24 was suggesting something that – for his 16 years of experience – seemed less than likely. Yet his answers suggested that he was slightly more familiar than I, so I just acknowledged his response.
I was also unsure of him saying that he had done Hajj (or Hadj according to my dictionary) in a different way, since a quick search on Google shows that all pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia is Hajj to Mecca – and the knowledge that, apparently, westerners are not at all welcome was the cause of my wavering emotions – so was left open to interpretation any way you want.

    Flood

I think this has had a good airing now but to clear up any up any misunderstanding on “Westerners not at all welcome in Mecca” etc Anyone is welcome in Mecca of any race or colour (westerners included) provided they are Muslims. There are check points as you go into Mecca and anyone who is not a muslim is turned away (this can be seen from your visa or internal passport which is an offence not to have with you at all times). The road around Mecca is nicknamed the “Christian Bypass”. It is correct that any Muslim making a trip to Mecca for the purpose of Pilgrimage constitutes Haj (The spelling is virtually irrelevant just as it would be trying to convert English words into Arabic script) and there is a set period for this. Anyone making the same pilgrimage outside the set period is performing “Umrah” and still constitutes having undertaken the Haj which LFC24 has performed and fair play to him for having done it at such a young age.
