The 7 Sqn ORB is very sparse until 1941, BUT!:

“Nov 28 1940; Stirling N.3638 had to make a forced landing near Edinburgh due to engine trouble, and this was successfully accomplished on the small Turnhouse aerodrome by P/O R.W. Cox and A/C being undamaged.”

The previous entry highlighted the problems with serviceability and modifications that had a significant impact on training. ‘Most flying being done in the two or three of the aircraft more serviceable than the others’.

May also be worth looking into 149 Sqn which formed with Stirlings at the beginning of Nov 1940.

Wokka Bob – That is what I was after thank you v much. I will have a look at 149 Sqdn as well. The thing is that 3 FW200s had flown up from Bordeaux and came up the Clyde, bombed Falkirk outskirts and looked as if they carried on. There was heavy cloud cover that day and I was wondering if the Stirlings were being confused with the FW200s if anyone had observed them in a gap in the clouds. I am trying to get confirmation of the FW200s because this would have been a rare occurrence. The info on the FW200s has come from Luftwaffe sources.

I have just contacted them Jerry although I have to say I don’t expect a great deal of help from that quarter based on past experience!

Many thanks for the responses and the bomb fall map is a great idea – that map of London is incredible – it looks as if hardly anywhere on it would have escaped from at least the blasts.

Very Nice – I often look up and watch airliners passing high overhead and imagine myself sitting in first class tucking into some decent grub and Champers.

The Easyjet being boarded is a nice change to see. It looks a bit like a scene from World War ‘Z’ 😀

Always an impressive fighter – sadly fading from European airshows now. Thanks for posting.

A considerable number of pre and post-strike recces were made over the UK, at very high altitude, by the Junkers 86 P.

The photo on the left is the trail left by a Ju 86 over Portsmouth at 1.30pm on 18 August 1940, taken by my late friend Alexander McKee (of Mary Rose fame) and on the right is the Ju 86 P.

NOTE: I have recently had a few unsolicited ‘enquiries’ from an erstwhile forum poster demanding to know how I obtained certain images. These have been couched in an accusing tone along the lines “These photos were from X’s collection – how did you get them?” I have little doubt that the images posted here may well attract a similar response, so to save you the trouble the vapour trail image came to me direct from Alexander and the Ju 86 from my colleague Dr Alfred Price. As it happens, he used both in his ‘Hardest Day’ book – just to save you the trouble of working out which book you want to accuse me of scanning them from!

Sorry about that little rant – but I post images here because I think people might be interested but there is little point if I get lunatic responses, frankly.

Enjoy, anyway, Old Git. Gosh….that sounds like a comment aimed at my tormentor! OK, then. Enjoy, OG!

    Andy,

Nice pictures – That is very helpful thank you. Do you think there is anywhere where I could find out details of missions – I am specifically interested in flights over Glasgow. I suppose trying to find out this kind of detail might be a bridge too far.

    Many thanks
    OG
