A Beautiful design. I only ever flew on one – a BOAC Comet from Kano to Lagos Nigeria in 1962. I remember when BEA put Comets on the Edinburgh – Heathrow route in the late sixties, they could certainly make a hell of a noise taking off.
Kurmitz – Although you are not too far away, that means you must still leave your place about 2.00AM to get there. I had no idea it was that bad. I might just buy and tent on the Friday morning and see if Reevey campsite have any places left for the weekend.
EAL King – Yes I have taken the bus before and it is quite good. I am not a football fan but I caught the train from Reading to Swindon years ago and at Swindon a horde of blokes got off carrying binoculars, ladders, radios and aircraft mags to go and get the coaches. I thought this is what a football outing must be like although without the aggro.
Thats very good news OG, sadly Saudi is not the best place for anyone at the moment, anyone else I knew over there has long gone! Are you back in the UK for good, or will there be another “posting” elsewhere in the future?
Thanks for asking Mark, No I am not going anywhere else abroad, I have had enough and the whole of the Middle East seems to be getting more volatile. Its quite scary coming back as I am 51 now and dont know what to do. I am however think of becoming a driving Instructor as over the years I have helped a number of family and friends through their tests. So if anyone on the Forum lives near Hungerford and needs driving lessons I will happily give a discount (and has proof of over 7,000 posts! :p :p :p )
Really glad to here your getting out of there so soon, just think… this time next year you will be out of there forever 🙂
Good luck.
Many Thanks for the thought LBARULES – I am moving into a hotel on Saturday just to be on the safe side. I can hardly wait to plonk my fat a*** on that 777 next week. Mines a Heineken :p
Seems the whole world wants to fly to/from EDI.. 🙂
I would certainly second that – when I went LHR – EDI in April I thought it would be fairly quiet at lunchtime but it was chock a block and the following sunday morning (18th April) I thought an 11.05 Ryanair flight to Dublin would be quiet but again it was full up. Still – on a positive note – full aircraft is good business for my favourite airport and spotters. 😉
You back in Britain yet OG? Nice to hear from you. 🙂
Thanks for the greeting LBARULES – Unfortunately I am still here but I am booked to fly out on Thursday 15th Just in time for RIAT 😀
I am going on BA – all their flights to Saudi now come through Kuwait as they do the crew change there so they dont have to stay overnight here.
I have my new digital camera at the ready and will try and get a couple of shots from my window seat (already requested) to post on the forum. Unfortunately the foreign airlines ramp is well away from the Saudia ramps but sometimes there is a rare bird – there was a Cameroon 747 the last time and an IL18 out of Sharjah.
Cheers
OG
Won’t those religious police be able to smell that you had something to drink? If they do smell it, would that be sufficient grounds for arrest?
Actually on arrival the authorities are not too bad, I usually arrive ****ed out of my head as its the last booze I get for 6 months but I try and behave as sensibly as possible. If you are obviously falling around and being stupid you will draw attention to yourself. I think it fair to say that on some flights I have been on that most of the single blokes have been in the same condition as me. As far as I know the only dry (major) airlines in this area are Kuwait and Saudia and maybe Iranair?. I dont know about the North African arab airlines like Libyan arab. My work colleague once came back on BA sitting next to a Saudi national. He produced a bottle of Glenfiddich and asked my colleague if he wanted some and he had a small snifter. This bloke then proceeded to drink the whole bottle and was out for the count at Jeddah. Two paramilitaries came on the plane and carried him off in a wheel chair, looked in his bag for his passport wheeled him through immigration and customs and handed him over to his relatives outside. My colleague stayed with him the whole way as he was worried about him. The two paramilitaries said he was unwell and to come back for his luggage the next day to his relatives. So occasionally the wisdom of Solomon is practiced here.
So it’s a case of drink-up quickly before landing then? 😀
It certainly is – not so easy as the stewardess comes towards you and you still have 2 full cans of Heineken and a nip but I always manage 😉 :p :p
I journalist colleague of mine swears that he once caught a Saudi flight to the Kingdom and the cabin staff refused to serve alcohol. However the cabin staff then offered complimentary bottles of whiskey to anybody who wanted to take one and drink at will, saying they were’nt against drinking, but simply their religion forbade them to serve it!
Anyone know if there is any truth to this?
I assume he was on Saudia which I fly from time to time backwards and forwards from here and I would say it is an absolute load of nonsense. There is a contingent of Religious police (called Muttawa) based at the international airports here who go on board aircraft to check for that very reason ie any evidence of alcohol. Furthermore many muslims on the Saudia flights know that the airline is supposed to be alcohol free and would report it on arrival which would result in the arrest of the crew. Even BA who serve booze say all traces of booze (empties) must be disposed of before landing and they are quite rigourous about it. That is not to say a crew member might not have acted on their own initiative but risking imprisonment and the loss of your job plus a possibe flogging seems a lot to risk just to be nice to your customers.
Good story but complete B******S 😀 😀
Just leave it to young Captain Weaver, I will e-mail you with the information, alternatively e-mail the CAA.

Safe legal flying
Captain Weaver – Many Thanks – I would certainly be grateful for any info you can dig out. I am doing this on behalf of his younger brother who lives in the USA and only just managed to get to the funeral in time but never found out any details of the crash and asked if I could find out anything.
Best Regards

God, sounds awful. Hope you get out OK, bet you can’t wait to leave.
Take care 🙂
Thanks for the thought LBARULES and just when you think it can’t get any worse I came into work after the afternoon break today to find my number has changed and all calls (including internal calls) have to go through the operator as someone rang one of the expats here earlier and has said they will kill us all (2 italians and 4 Brits). I am hoping to get out on July 1st and I wont feel safe till I am out of Saudi airspace. I never knew that people could hate so much.
Mind you I am getting a bit off topic here – apologies.
How’s thing’s in Saudi, Old Git ? Must confess to having a worry on your behalf after the events of the past week or two. 😮
Thats very kind of you to ask Ren – thanks. Actually I handed by notice in (90 days) ten days ago and have asked to be released early. Things have got so bad here that my nerves won’t take any more. The final straw was a gun battle barely 200 yards from where I am sitting now with 4 terrorists killed. So I have no job to go back to but things usually work out. On a positive note I will head up to Edi during the summer and it would be great to meet up with a few people from the forum if anyone is about.
Best Wishes
Keith McC
Can I come too ? 😀
You are most welcome – all I ask is that when I get blootered could you hang my camera and binocs around my neck, point me in the direction of the hotel and give me a good push – Thanks 😀 :p 😀
Thanks for the info LBARULES I was going to book a holiday in early July and remembered that place. Its a shame about the bad review of the hotel though. I thought a terrace overlooking the end of a runway – beer on tap – beach 50 metres away, hopefully awash with topless tarts – it doesn’t get much better than that.
