Great report wysiwyg – I am always sympathetic to people travelling with young children. I remember one good put down when someone had written into a paper about screaming brats on aircraft. One of the replies to it was that “most children grow out of the whining stage but unfortunately not all” :p

Thats a shame. They are my favourite models. I did buy a Vulcan but I preferred the airliners. I had always hoped they were going to be a bit more adventurous and do some of the older Russian airliners (TU 114 & IL18).

I have a glossy booklet on Abbotsinch which I bought for 2/6 in July 68 when I was passing through there. There are a few colour photos in it but mainly black and white. The cover is loose but its still in good nick. I am going on leave on 13th October and if my flat is not rented by then I will dig it out of the attic and scan some of it for you (assuming you don’t already have a copy). I also have one of Manchester airport I bought there in 1969.
I have a few things in my attic at home
Some used BEA tickets Heathrow-Edinburgh mid-late sixties
British United Airways flight mag from 1968
Three BOAC inflight menus London-Abu Dhabi & one London to Bombay (early seventies)
A BOAC booklet from 1971 advertsing the Seychelles
A 1950s BOAC wallet for travel docs
East African Airways folder which had in flight stuff in it (sadly lost now) from a trip in January 1971 Nairobi-Entebbe-Rome-LHR.
My BOAC junior jet club log book which lists my trips to Nigeria in the 1950’s giving the aircraft (Stratocruisers/Britannias/Comets) & registration, the route, Air Miles and signed by the Captain of each flight.
One thing I am pleased with is a Squadron Badge I bought from a crewman when The TU 95 first made its appearance at Fairford back in 1994(??)
Same at Edinburgh – closure of a perfectly good viewing terrace. There is no question in my mind that BAA are anti -spotter/enthusiast but they forget that the young spotters of today are tomorrows travellers and the older ones are frequent flyers. Many is the time I have arrived early at Heathrow to go to the viewing terrace before catching my flight. Neither am I impressed by the “security” argument – if I wanted to use a rocket propelled grenade launcher or a shoulder launched missile the last place I would fire it from would be a busy spectators terrace. There are many airports on the continent that seem more than capable of accommodating spotters/sightseers.

Thats a beer I have not heard of – years ago I used to drink La Mot or Le Mot?? which I think is Belgian – nice beer too.
I know this is off topic Comet but I did a bit of research and I found a reference to it (La Mot) on http://www.beerhunter.com on a page by Michael Jackson entitled “The Family Business is alive again”. It was brewed in Mechelen but taken over by Interbrew so it has probably disappeared – Shame:(
I am 51 in November (but still lots of fun as they say on Blind Date):p Reading some of the posts here I think I should be getting ready to make that journey accross the River Styx.
Happy Birthday to Everyone.

I am glad to see that Edinburgh is getting more international services. I agree with Renfrew that Edinburgh is definitely being favoured at the moment but I will say that for many years Edinburgh was in Glasgows shadow. I consider Turnhouse as my spiritual home having spent what seems like half my life spotting there (I even worked as a concrete labourer when they built the runway there in 75/76) and I always felt that BAA always used to spend the bare minimum on it (EG lack of a full length parallel taxiway). I also feel that one solution is for both airports to break away from BAA and operate independently. Still its a far cry from the days when all transatlantic flights had to arrive and depart from Prestwick for the whole of Scotland. I remember permission being granted for Two Pan Am 707s being given permission to fly to Edinburgh but having to transit through Prestwick
The second part of your post is very well put Adrian. Its not often someone I don’t know will give me free booze for 5 hours!!!!!!!!
A nice little set of photos Martin. Was’nt Dresden in the old East Germany? I was expecting some old dilapidated terminal but it looks nice and modern.
Despite the problems in this area, passenger numbers have been dropping for some time. Air France no longer fly to Jeddah and neither do Swissair (as it was). Lufthansa had a direct flight from Frankfurt but it is now routed through Riyadh. I flew back from here on 13th March and I counted 29 of us on the coach out to the aircraft. The reason is that there is no longer the money here that there once was and I know a number of people who have not had contracts renewed and left for good. A sign of the times here I am afraid and when you add the terrorist threat then numbers drop even more. Its a sod for me because I count the days to when I sit on the plane looking down after take off with a nice cool heineken in front of me. Saudia don’t serve alcohol. If BA don’t return in the near future I will have to look at the alternatives – maybe Cyprus Airways.
