Superb pictures. I am glad to see that nothing has changed about airshows since then ie gloomy wet days and everyone well wrapped up!
I was there today. Just got back an hour ago although I spent most of the day in the research room. I did have a quick look around at the end followed by a decent cup of tea in the caff. It was my first visit and I have to say I had a great day, finished off with a handful of the old 20p mags in the bookshop. I would recommend it to anyone who has not been before.:D
Nice Shots – I was hoping to see the Delta 767 I came in on from Detroit but it was a bit early.
Lovely shots – the colours almost hurt your eyes!!
Lovely shots, the weather looked just right for the light.
If I could have a couple of mega lottery wins I would buy it and reopen the spectator terrace plus luxury viewing points built every 200 yards around the perimeter then I would extend the runway out to Cramond so it could take the longest haul flights 😀 Nice to dream but as everyone is saying it depends on who buys but I have never felt that BAA / Ferrovial were that interested in much happening outside the London area.
That is good news. For a while now Glasgow seems to have been in the Doldrums. Let’s hope this is the start of an upswing.
As a final postscript to the Saudi side of it. Airwork were off the Saudi contract from April 1973. The British Ambassador at the time said to a senior AW rep that he hoped Airwork would complete the contract in a spirit of goodwill on the basis that there might be other work there for them in the future.
The Magic Carpet part of the contract referred to the first part of the Air Defence Scheme for the urgent requirement to have 6 Lightnings and 6 Hunters up to operational status as fast as possible. All this is in files at the National Archive at Kew
By odd coincidence I looked at the microfiche for the card for L1241 (from the RAF AHB) earlier today and it shows that it was taken on charge with 25 Sqn on 19/12/38 but there is nothing after that.
Nice set of pictures with I-FXRD really standing out. Rain and dark clouds at Edinburgh – how unusual 😀 I am still drying out from my last trip up there.

We are waiting for an update after your Thursday meeting with ex Kuwait Lightning Pilots!;)
Eagerly awaiting!!
I will be meeting a few pilots who flew KAF Lightnings on Thursday if anyone has any specific questions they’d like asking – let me know
Kind Rgds SF
SF I would like to know who carried out their maintenance/ground crew back up and also whether Airwork were in any way involved. Firebird has given what looks like a conclusive answer but it would be nice to hear it from one of the horses mouths so to speak.
I think Airwork were probably too stretched in Saudi at the time to get involved but it would be interesting to find out for sure.
Many Thanks
OG
I don’t believe, from what little info I’ve seen that any RAF pilots were seconded to KAF. Ex-RAF on contract very likely, but not current serving IIRC.
Sorry Firebird, you are absolutely correct. Secondment is not the right word. I don’t know anything about the KAF operation hence my first question, but the Saudi Lightnings had pilots who were on contract to Airwork and when various problems arose, the pilots were then employed by the Saudi Government through another third party whilst the RAF offered the facility to train up Saudi pilots as quickly as possible.
Airwork were not involved with the Kuwait operations. There may have been some very small, token BAC support in the early days, just post delivery, but lack of support infrastructure is one of the reasons cited for the Kuwait Lightning fleet being offered for sale as early as 1973, just a few years after being bought. There was no real interest, so they soldiered on with spoaradic operations until replacing them in 1977 with the simpler to operate Mirage F1.
Thank you Firebird, that is what I thought as I have not come across one instance of their involvement in all the digging around I have done.
thegypsy – Thanks also for your response. The pilot you knew being RAF suggests he was on secondment. From what I can find on Saudi operations with the Lightning, they were always stretched for suitable personnel, especially on the Magic Carpet contract.

Again a very nice set of shots. Penang is a place I have been recommended as a good place for a holiday.
