……… why is history in particular singled-out in this way………

Any other way, it would be a calendar-remembering lesson….

    1. Really old stuff happened – everyone wore white dressing gowns and lived in stone buildings. Lots of columns
    2. Slightly old stuff happened. Dressing gowns replaced by sheets. early Christians fed to lions. Some Roaming builders created a garden feature across northern Britain.
    3. Old stuff occured. People with horned helmets killed some monks and creatd England
    4. dark Ages
    5. Light bulb invented
    6. Now-ish.

    (and that’s the DEGREE version….)

If they’re talking about higher education, then they’re probably not that wide of the mark as the emphasis at that level has always been on “what and why” rather than on the “who and when” taught to younger school students.

Actually I was referring to sub-GCSE rather than HE/FE. The National Curriculum syllabus is very disjointed and offers no chronologial progression. My daughter (9) has, in the following order, learned about:
    Elizabethans
    Romans
    Tudors
    Egyptians
But the school does not recognise separate ‘lessons’, but rather ‘discussion topics’ for any given day or week.

The new generation of primary school Academies will be faced with the same issues of ‘bums on seats’ rather than the quality of the learning

Learning about history IS (according to the government) all about the social implications of events, and not about the chronology of the event itself.

The problems with education are complex but can be condensed neatly:

The teachers, for the most part, are highly skilled and know their subject inside out, BUT are weighed down by the above…..

Oh and by the way, if you want an Aviation History Degree, its easy enough to create one, but the student market is tiny and therefore it is not worth creating one. What could you do with a degree in Aviation History?

I wonder if the seller did get them copied and ‘donate’ the images to a museum. I’d bet not.

no bids on any other items other than one of the monkey bikes. Also reported to eBay again. The guy is an utter retard.

Any ideas what the ‘lancaster’ item actually is? Certainly not Lancaster bombsight, but it is interesting irrespective of that fact.
