I know it’s a long shot but can anyone help me locate an image of this aircraft?

    Thanks in anticipation

A long time since you asked, but how about this??

    DE470

BBMF Dakota heading south for the veterens day parade flypast in Gosport.

Also silver Tiger Moth heading north about 10 mins later. If its the same one as you saw, 240 Gardner it could be the one that flies out of Daedalus/Lee on the Solent. It would be about right from the time I saw it at about 1130.

    Martin

Thanks Martin – it would help if I could read my own writing…

    DE470 not 490!! (G-ANMY)

Belongs to “Dog Easy Limited” of Oxford, whoever they may be.

    Tiger Moth “DE490”

Circling several times very low over Kintbury village (West Berkshire) early this afternoon, silver Tiger Moth (I think) marked “DE490”. I’ve googled it, and all I can find is that DE490 crashed on approach to Elmdon in 1945.

    Can anyone enlighten me?

    W/C Braham

Born in Surrey but raised in Blackburn. Joined RAF from position with Lancashire Constabulary.

And W/C Braham was an Old Boy of QEGS, Blackburn, which Nick will recognise.

(long time, no speak, Nick, by the way!)

Ok… im well aware this thread is dangerously heading towards going off topic but… am i right in thinking that Factory 1 would be the old Fisher Pressed Steel works and Factory 2 parallel to the Liverpool Manchester railway line and just before Hunts Cross station…?

    Zeb (yet another scouser…)

As a Triumph afficionado, I recall that Factory 1 was originally Hall Engineering, a sub-contractor who made some of the parts for the Herald shells. Heralds were built on a separate chassis frame because Standard Triumph couldn’t find a supplier to build unitary shells, the major producers being controlled by Ford and by BMC. The bodies were part welded, and part bolted-up.

Bit of a wild guess, but that pier in the background looks very much like the one there was at Kalafrana, Malta. However I cannot recognise the buildings.

    Airart

That’s ‘cos they were in Bathurst 😉

I’ve been having a look at that photo!! I’ll have a word with my friends mom and see if she knows any more about her uncle.
    Thanks for the links btw.
    Ivan

Ivan, there is a photo here of the crew of 95/P (DV973), and dated January 1944.

    http://www.95squadron.webs.com/P-95.html

There is a list of the names on the back of the photo, one of which is “A/G Sgt Davies”

Apparently, this Sunderland crashed in April of that year, and three of the crew were lost.

240 Gardner. His name was Joseph Davies, known as Joe.
    Thanks.

Your pal might see if he can spot him here:

Funnily enough, there was a Davies in my Dad’s crew. I’m arranging to meet one of them soon, so I’ll ask him to see if he recognises the photo.

Yes. Appears to have been carried in someone’s wallet for several decades. Must have been dear to him…95 at Bathurst 1944 with Sunderland IIIs.
see below for a nice clean photo. Will be happy to email you scan of it, if you wish. (and send me your email)
Mine may be fresher and cleaner, but yours has more “character!”

And the aircraft at the back on the right appears to be 95/D (W6076) which was my father’s aircraft from June 1944 until May 1945.
(Barnstormer was kind enough to send me this same photo a couple of years ago)

Perhaps Ivan’s mate’s uncle was with 95 – may I ask his name?

BBC1 tonight, Thursday 26/06/08 at 21.00 “Britain’s Lost World” includes reporter Dan Snow investigating a World War Two plane crash on St. Kilda.

    Roger Smith.

I chanced upon the programme, and the feature on the Sunderland struck a chord with me – it was said that the crew were on their last training flight prior to transit to Africa: my father was doing the same at that time with his new crew, and he then flew ML859 out to Bathurst (new and shiny, apparently).

To his great regret, he had to hand it over to a French crew on arrival, and was given a rather more tired Mk III instead!

Taken from the thread about a Wellington wreck is this link to a Sunderland but it also mentions the scuttled ones including a movement card entry.

I was interested to see the movement card for W6055 on that link, as I have just found it in my father’s log book, flying as second pilot to W/C Van Der Kiste in August 1943, and when he first joined 201 Sqn at Lough Erne

I too regularly appreciate the aeros over Greenham Common – the sights & sounds are a joy to behold even in Speen (NW Newbury) where I live.

The other day (27/07) I was treated to the Seafire 17 flying over my house – 5 days later I was sitting in said a/c at Culdrose talking to Jon BT the pilot – happy days!

It’s not just me then, Nick! The only disappointment is that, every time I ride around the Common on my bike, with camera at the ready, there’s never an aeroplane to be seen! And I missed the P51 on Sunday because my study window is north facing – he must have sneaked in from the east or the south!

    Thank you to the pilots!

White Waltham (25 miles ) is a hub of aerobatic excellence, with Paul Bonhomme, Alan Cassidy and many more based here.

Greenham is one of a number of sites for practice, and you would probably see SU29, Yak55, Yak52, Pitts, Extra as the primary campaigners.

Pilots ‘book’ the box at operations, and the use is rotated to minimise noise to any single location place. However, the airspace is not ‘owned’ in any sense, and if someone else turns up in his Scruggs Wundaplane to do some aeros, that is his right.

Thanks for that info and, whoever it is practicing over Greenham Common, THANK YOU!! Your artistry is much appreciatedby me at least. Aerobatic excellence sounds a good description: it looks very professional indeed.

The only downside for me is that I’m moving out of Greenham towards Hungerford shortly, so I will be missing out on future displays. Any practice areas near Kintbury at all??

But you have to. It is not the many people that don’t mind that cause problems it is the odd one or two people that complain. These peopel should not be ignored they should be fought. If someone is in the Newbury Bugle moaning about flying near Greenham Common the write in and point out that there are plenty of people who appreciate the sound of an aeroplane and prefer that to another massive housing development on something that used to be an airfield.

No, TAKE notice of them and beat them at their own game.

I did! Of course, this was a complaint made about someone flying about over what is now open land, rather than using an airfield. Anyway, I wrote in reply pointing out that airshows are hugely popular, pilots need to practice somewhere, that he should be grateful for all the free and impressive shows, and that I and others are actually pleased to see and hear the aeroplane in question.
