Otherwise known as form drag. While thrust may also decrease … due to the sudden changes in the fluid and thermo – dyanmics of the intake.

Yeah, but speed is still a critical factor in a dogfight. I think that’s what he was getting at by saying your remark was misinformed. He who bleeds speed off the fastest will probably get obliterated.

Yes – thats basically it. Absolutes are irrelavent – but the aircrafts ability to gain and maintain speed in certain situations can be more essential than the jets turn radius. Obviviously with HOBS missiles and HMD – that becomes even more important – espcially the Asraam concept – using the missile in a semi BVR role/coupled with optical tracking at the edge of its envelope while you stay fast and turn – not giving the opposition a chance to engage you with their heaters. The platform helps obviously – perhaps one reason why the tiffy is slaying pretty much everyth?ng it comes up against.

Sorry, but speed has nothing to do with a dogfight. Speed has to do with interception.

    That’s a terribly misinformed statement. I’d expect better…..

I agree the SH is great overall performer – but if you were at Farnborough/RIAT this year surely you noticed the Eurofighter had a steeper climb prof?le.

One of my mates works for Mike Beachy Head – as an engineer – still hasn’t been allowed up in the jets though :).

It is much more difficult to shot down MiG-25 at high speed and altitudes, because of its relatively high maneuverability.
As a streight line a/c, the SR-71 is too predictable and have to rely on mission planning to avoid SAM sites.

Changing your tune? I thought no missile could catch it? 🙂 – As soon as a Mıg-25 engages in a ‘high’ G turn at high Mach it is going to bleed velocity/altitude in short order. It wont be able to sustain ‘high’ G high Mach turns as well as 4.5 – 5th gen ac types. With such a cr&p T-D*W ratio – in certain situations ‘cranking’ might not be the best option – but rather do what the blackbird does – aka fly straight.

My favourite has always been the black and gold paint scheme of the black and gold South African Mirage IIICZ!

Fedaykin – cheers for the link.

I agree the show ?s unrealistic – period.

But TV nozzles in certain (and in most cases limited) flight regimes do effect turn rates – period.

Increasing AoA – can increase the effect the wing has on actually turning the jet – especially in slow speed turns where the onset of vortex/lift induced drag is less pronounced. But for most turning profiles ?t ?s limited – useless.

The Raptor isn’t leaving home, no matter how much the fan boys think it is.

One loss of the jet, and the security compromise would be immense.

This isn’t about fanboys or not – all I am saying is 122 + Raptors are delivered vs 0 operational Su-35s. But on a side note – of course the F-22 is not leaving home – Russia and the US are not at war are they?

With regard to the Patriot SAM – surely you have realised by now – after Russia have lost 4 – 10 jets to a Georgian ADS – that having ARMs in service wouldn’t prevent the RuAF from having a torrid time against a Patriot type system – in a non nuclear conflict. 🙂

    d) Standard SM-2ER Block IV

That actually has a range of 230 miles = 368 Km – the missile is in the same class of the S-400 family of missiles and out ranges any aster variant by a fair margin. It also formed the basis of the RIM-161 SM-3 which reportedly has a range of over 500 Km.
