If after over 25 years the number of jet aircraft in the world had been less than 200, most people had not considered it to be a significant gap.
Obviously so far stealth has been considered nice to have, but not worth it. There are no VLO aircraft that has been capable of replacing any previous aircraft, actually one stealth aircraft has been take out of service without any stealth replacement.
Big money has been invested in the dream of an untouchable aircraft, but to this date these dreams has not materialised in an aircraft that has been seen as worth to produce in big numbers. Will F-35 be capable of breaking this curve? It might be, if it is possible to sell it for a competetive price and the performance is not compromised to much and most of all if the maintenance cost problem is solved. But stealth alone wont make it a success, as with all previous stealth aircraft there are other considerations to.
In 25 years the Cold War has ended. While aircraft technology has continued to increase exponentially – cost has also increased exponentially – and more from a software/avionics/systems point of view. Low-intensity conflicts have taken centre stage – negating the need for anti-peer weapon systems such as the F-22/B-2. Hence the drop in production of both these weapon systems. Since the introduction of the F-117 there hasn’t been a new tactical fighter/bomber developed by the USAF without VLO/LO. Its not seen as a nice to have in USAF circles – but rather a necessity. The trick is making it affordable – which is what the F-35 aims to make true. One must remember – until now the USA was probably the only nation with the capability and funding required to produce stealth aircraft in numbers – but with low intensity-warefare taking centre stage their requirements changed.
“actually one stealth aircraft has been take out of service without any stealth replacement.” The USAF disagree – while the F-22 won’t have the 2000lb LGB drop capability – it brings other, more essential capabilities.

Mach 1.5 is probably in optimum conditions without any external stores. Mabye some engine tweaks aswell.
Its probably a roll rate relating to a specific altitude (probably 11km) and speed – which wont be the same as what you see at an airshow.
I have a feeling 2900 km is with 6,610kg of fuel.
Has PIRATE added an extra 155kg?
It’s interesting that the EF is limited to only Mach 1.8 max and Mach 1 at sea level. SC of Mach 1.1 is a tad low?

Sorry plawolf – I was talking about something that was completely different to what you were trying to say – a result of not following the conversation properly. But as to an anti-radiation LRAAM vs the fighter – it depends on a number of factors I suppose.
LPI based radars such as APG-77 – by fooling ARLRAAMs.
Guidance of BVR missiles through passive means as the F-22 is capable of apparently through ALR-94.
Team work such as handing off responsibility of BVR targeting data to other fighters while you go passive. Etc.

During which time you won’t be able to guide your own BVRAAMs. Thats a big disadvanatge in the BVR contest. Its well worth a missile to effectively neutralise the enemy BVR attack, so you get a ‘free shot’ without having to worry about the enemy BVR coming at you while you guide your missile into seeker range.
That only becomes the case when the BVR launch platform is insufficient to guide its own missile.

Thanks Loke – the second page is the one I was refering to – you are correct about it not being Tom – I hadn’t read it for a long time. But according to that Q&A its getting full stealth. Any updates saying it won’t get full stealth?

But didn’t Tom Burbage say it directly in a Q&A session with the public? I swear I saw the direct quote but I could be wrong :)?

HOW TO SAUTE
Apparently Tom Burbage – the head of F-22 and F-35 claimed that Norway would aquire full stealth versions? It is hard to know exactly whats going on.

According to the LM sales pitch to Norway – the F-35 they purchase will be no-compromise LO.

Can someone please translate what’s being said? Cheers.
Toan it’s quite clear that arthuro says 6 F-16s downed for 2 Rafales during day one. Thats a 3:1 ratio.
If the F-35 exported to Norway is as good as the USAF F-35s – then I’m sure for a pilot – from a pure capability standpoint the F-35 is indeed a superior product. If the F-35 becomes far to expensive to aquire the GNG proposal becomes more enticing.

The incident I mentioned happened in 1987 – where the metallic tails/fins were replaced with a non metallic – graphite thermoplastic materials.
How well did the system work? Well, Brown recounted how one of the vertical stabilizers separated during a test flight. The computers responded so fluidly that the Air Force pilot did not know ?the right fin of the aircraft just broke off at the root? until the chase plane told him he?d better land as soon as possible, and why!
