Anyway, a nice overview from gripen international with all the weapons the Gripen can carry can be found at http://www.gripen.com/en/MediaRelations/Publications/Brochures/Archive/Weapons.htm
I wonder what Thailand has picked from this pot of goodies.
This is the thing that we still don’t know. We can say for sure that RTAF will buy RBS-15F. But I still don’t kno w about the other.
Some news from RTAF here.
ACM Ittipol Supawong, Chief of Staff of Royal Thai Air Force welcomed Major General jeffrey A. Remington, Director of Air, Space and Information Operations, Headquarters Pacific Air Forces, Hickam Air Force Base, Hawaii on 4 Feb 2008 to discuss about the Exercise Cope Tiger 08 and MLU program on F-16. They were also discussed about the procurement of weapon that would equipped with F-5, F-16, and Gripen.
has anyone seen reliable information, for example direct quotes from Thai military, about what type of weapons the Gripens will be armed with and if they are intended to be used against the rebels in South Thailand? I have seen some newspapers referring to this, but am not sure how reliable that information is.
Oh. OK I see, my friend. It’s from newspaper. ๐
It’s impossible that RTAF will uses Gripen against militant in southern Thailand. This assumption ….. is from the Swedish peace group which almost know nothing about the situation in Thailand. Mate, we not even use L-39 or F-16 in southern Thailand. ๐ฎ How possibly that we will use Gripen? and … who we could hit since our militant almost have no camp? They stay in their home acting like a very good citizen during the day but placing the bomb and mine in the night. I’m sorry but they just saying without thinking about the truth and they not even see the real situation. They might watching US fighting war in Iraq and A-stan and think that ‘Oh, Thailand may use our fighter in the war’. Oh God, They should come here and see by their eye. :diablo:
So we don’t have the official qoute because we never think about this in Thailand until the Swedish peace group say it. Maybe the good way to find some official quote is you can write to Royal Thai Embassy in your country. You will get an answer. ๐
๐ Ummmm. Since we never think about this and the peace group repeatingly saying this I just start to think that it’s sound nice. Some GBU for our separatist. Ummmm it look cool! I’ll write to our PM soon. He He He :dev2:
Take it with the pitch of salt, mate. ๐
BTW, there are some official news release from RTAF in English which you can find here. ๐

About the weapon system. We got the official document from Royal Swedish Embassy in Thailand about their offer. You can find it here.

I see from this thread that the RTAF uses RAF ranks. That’s nice.
Oh yes RTAF use RAF rank because in the first time that we tried to establish the Western-style Army about a hundred years ago we hired English officer. So they taught us with the English Army manner and used English rank system. Our Royal Guard unitform is even adopt from English one. In fact, Thailand got many Englishmans since King Rama IV singed the trade pact with Queen Victoria in 1855. After that King of Siam (Thailand) hired many English officers to Army and Navy, to be the commander of some Army units or to be the Captian for RTN ship. They stay until we got enough skilled Thai officer. ๐

It’s suppose to be Endurance-class LPD. But I still didn’t see the actual design yet.
Thailand Plans $191.3M Arms Purchase
By PATRICK WINN
Published: 12 Sep 15:32 EDT (19:32 GMT) Print | Email
BANGKOK – Thailand’s military, still standing watch over the kingdom’s political upheaval, has been cleared to purchase thousands of Israeli assault rifles and a Singaporean warship.
Embattled Thai Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej, who doubles as defense minister, approved a package of defense modernization deals with his Cabinet on Sept. 9. In total, the package is worth an estimated $191.3 million.
Most of the package is devoted to a $152.8 million Singapore Technologies-designed amphibious frigate. The Royal Thai Armed Forces will also buy thousands of Israeli assault rifles and Russian shoulder-fired anti-aircraft missiles.
“The Cabinet has been lenient with military requests this year in particular,” said Thitinan Pongsudhirak, a political and security analyst with Bangkok’s Chulalongkorn University. “The last thing Samak needs right now is disgruntlement in the military.”
Cabinet documents obtained by Defense News say that Thailand’s military will contract with Singapore Technologies to buy one large, amphibious frigate – called a landing platform dock ship – for transporting cargo and troops.
However, the papers don’t specify an exact model. The frigate will be paid off in installments through 2011.
Thailand has also inked a contract to buy 15,037 Tavor TAR-21 assault rifles from Israel. This $30.1 million buy will boost the Thai military’s total stock of the bullpup-design rifles to more than 30,000 – replacing many of the Army’s aging rifles.
That purchase is coupled with a $4.4 million order for 531 Israeli Negev light machine guns, raising Thailand’s stock to more than 1,100. These will be partially paid for from a special budget tied to securing the violence-scarred Malaysian border, where separatist Muslim insurgents continue to target soldiers and civilians. Russia will also supply 36 Igla-S shoulder-fired, surface-to-air missiles to Thailand – with seven launching mechanisms – for nearly $4 million.
The contracts, which Thitinan described as “scattered,” suggest the Thai military lacks a “coherent long-term procurement strategy,” he said.
In December, when a military council still led Thailand after former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra’s 2006 coup, it announced a similar round of purchases. In addition to overall modernization plans for each service, the military announced plans to buy Saab Gripen fighter jets, Chinese surface-to-surface missiles, armed personnel carriers and more.
“It’s been a hodgepodge package in the last few years,” Thitinan said.
The new package appears in part to address some of Thailand’s topical needs, with the Negev light machine guns intended to fight the kingdom’s gruesome southern insurgency. The amphibious frigate, according to Cabinet documents, will provide quick disaster relief. Singapore’s fleet of landing platform dock ships – all built by the same Singapore Technologies firm – were among the many vessels delivering medics and supplies during the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami.
The deal, a modernization boon to Thailand’s military, was inked under a shroud of political unrest. To approve the package, the prime minister and his Cabinet convened many provinces away from their Bangkok compound, still occupied as of Sept. 12 by protesters demanding Samak’s resignation. At one point 10,000 deep, the protesters transformed the prime minister’s stately grounds into a grungy campsite ringed with razor-wire and makeshift barricades.
After Samak issued a state of emergency on Sept. 2, no soldiers were dispatched to the compound, and many questioned his sway over the military.
Gen. Anupong Paochinda, the Royal Thai Army’s commander in chief, has insisted that restoring peace through the military is not the answer. Still, Thai military leaders took a similar public stance just before they ousted previous Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra two years ago.
Relations between Samak and the military remain “smooth and close,” said government spokesman Nattawut Saikua. But he added: “I say this realizing the leader of the last coup said many, many times he would not seize power.”
However, Samak’s tenuous hold on the prime minister’s seat is not expected to affect the military’s new arms package.
Thank!!! ๐

ACM Itthaporn Subhawong, the first F-16 sqn. leader of RTAF. p-)

Well to be exact you said “loss” not crash and the first incident http://www.f-16.net/f-16_mishaps_airforce-RTAF.html is definitely a LOSS !!!! ๐
Oh!!! I never notices that ‘loss’ and ‘crash’ is not the same meaning. ๐ฎ My broken English again. Thank for your correction. ๐
Do the USAF need setup the new bidding if they fail to explaint to congress?
Not exactly. Two accidents, one write-off.
http://www.f-16.net/f-16_mishaps_airforce-RTAF.html
It’s not a crash. I said F-16 never crash but it doesn’t mean they never have an accident. (If you defind word crash by the general meaning in which the plane fell down from the sky) One F-16 was wrote off by hard landing. No one got hurt and the pilot not event made an ejection. The overall airframe is still OK except the landing gear system. It was hard and not worth to repair so they decommissioned them. Another accident was came from the high speed taxi during the demonstration to the air force cadet. The pilot start the afterburner while the aircraft was still in the improper direction, causing the aircraft to run out of taxi way.
Regard.
… especially if they consider themselves allies..
…. and both of them is NATO members. ๐
It’s 20th Anniversary of F-16 in Royal Thai Air Force.
RTAF is the first operator of F-16 in South East Asia. All F-16A/B came from 5 projects; Peace Naresuan I (1988),Peace Naresuan II (1990),Peace Naresuan III (1995), Peace Naresuan IV (2002) and Singapore donation as a exchange for the training ground in Thailand (2005). Without any single crash in the past 20 years, today RTAF operates 59 F-16 in 3 squadrons. And the major upgrade program are being conduct in all of them include Falcon Up/Star and MLU program to enable Thai Falcon to fly until 2039.
Some photos of the special painting of this anniversary. ๐

I think quite a few people in other countries might dispute the first part of that statement ๐
A quick bit of googling reveals that cloud seeding was probably first achieved in the USA in 1946/7.cheers baz
Yep. But those technology has never transfered to Thailand. Thailand is not the first country who invented this technology but I talk about the rainmaking technology that we invented by our own. Just like you say Ford invent Car and the Japanese say they invent Toyota. ๐
Maybe my broken English. Sorry to make you confuse. Thank for correction. ๐
Just wondering what is this Rainmaking Missions never heard of it before
James
Rainmaking mission is to make the rain, my friend. ๐ When there are no rain for a long time the farmer will send the request for the rain to the Royal Rainmaking Project. And they will inspect the weather, if the weather is suitable to make the rain they wil send those Caravan in the air and they will drop some chemical like Calcium Chloride, Calcium Oxide, Dry Ice etc. to group the cloud together and make it rain. :diablo:
Those Caravan are belong to the Bureau of Royal Rainmaking and Agricultural Aviation (KASET) which reports directly to the ministry of Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperative and Bureau of The Royal House Hold. (Rainmaking process was invented and today supervise by the king of Thailand.)
I’m just amazed that all their displays aren’t rained off ๐
Moggy
Oh please, I do not want to get wet. ๐ ๐ ๐
Thank you all.
